About
Saratoga is a solo or two-person turn-based strategy wargame that is Volume I in the Great Battles of the American Revolution wargame series created by designer Mark Miklos and published by GMT Games. The game focuses on the Battle of Saratoga on September 19, 1777 which proved to be the turning point of the American Revolution.
Players can battle human opponents online or play against the game's AI. There are three scenarios that offer opportunities to explore alternate histories, including a British counterattack on the next day.
Saratoga features gameplay based on the historical wargaming boardgames of the 70's and 80's. Players maneuver markers that represent their units on a hexagonal map that mimics the gameboard and cardboard counters of traditional boardgames. Players alternate their turns with the first player being determined either by the scenario or randomly. During their turn a player will conduct maneuver for their units and then engage in combat using units with capabilities based on the historical record. Combat is resolved through die rolls modified by terrain, the ability of nearby leaders and the characteristics of the units in the combat.

Saratoga is Volume I of the enormously popular Great Battles of the American Revolution series designed by Mark Miklos and published by GMT Games.
Each side has an historically accurate order of battle that encourages the player to attempt to outdo the generals of history. Saratoga has scenarios that simulate "what-if" situations as well. What if the British had counter-attacked the next day? What if Benedict Arnold had gotten his way and been free to attack?
Combat includes modifiers for leadership, each unit's abilities and terrain to provide a realistic simulation. There is also a "press your luck" component that allows players to spend momentum to modify die rolls or in some cases to re-roll dice.

I own both of the physical BOAR Tri-Packs from GMT and this conversion to a digital game is fantastic! For someone new to the series or hex and counter wargames this is a great introduction. The UI is well laid out and easy to follow, giving the player step by step understanding of what is going on. This is the perfect tool to teach someone new to the series how to play. It is also a great way for veterans like myself to get some play in without setting everything up on the table. Pushing cardboard will always be my top choice, but this digital version of the game gets 2-thumbs up from me. I look forward to more battles from the series being added. Thank you devs for this gem!
This is a rarity amongst games available today. Saying it has beautiful counter and board art is an understatement. You'll find faithful reproduction of the units that participated at Saratoga. The scale is small enough that you don't see 'hex stacking' of traditional revolutionary wargames. This promotes fire and maneuver and is much more enjoyable. The AI is pretty darn good, as well as the digital developers' implementation of Mark Miklos' game system. Games can be quick, or long, depending on your mood or study level. The price can't be beat. The ONLY drawback, and perhaps this is just me, is it took me a bit to get used to the UI. However, once I did... it's a cake walk. Highly recommended, especially for the price of a Big Mac. Two thumbs up. I can't wait for Hexes of War's next release. ~K
Loving this great computer adaptation! I have played this before the tabletop game and the great UI has actually helped me learn the rules very quickly. I have waited for this game to be available for a couple of months now. Well worth the wait. Great job all around. Please, please, please adapt other BoAR games using this UI.
A great adaptation of the GMT game. Completely agree with the crispness and clarity of the UI. Music is a great touch. We want more:)
I am a long time player of GMT's board games especially The American Revolution Series. I'm so happy they have brought this to STEAM. Now I can play it all the time. Hoping they will develop the rest of the series.
Excellent boardgame to computer game port. The tutorials are very clear and make it easy to begin play. I really love that the charts and mechanics are just like the board game. Highly recommended.
I've played the into scenario twice now and I have to say the UI has been very well thought out. There are a lot of nice features that make this game a lot of fun to play. If you enjoy hex and counter war games, you'll enjoy this one.
Wunderbar, fantastic job on this
Nice quality of life implementation. Solo campaign game can be completed in less than half the time as playing via vassal or F2F
This is a faithful representation of the board game, very well done. As it goes, it is also an interesting (and key) battle of the American Revolutionary War. I would love to see more titles from this series (White Plains, Brandywine, Germantown, etc).
