Like all RuneScape games, community is at the heart of everything we do.
We've shaped our entire roadmap based on player feedback, leading us to launch dedicated servers earlier than planned, introduce new combat and new quest content. Working together we're continuing to develop RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Whether you're adventuring with friends or going it alone, every opinion matters, and it's up to you to help us shape the future of our game.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds started Alpha testing in late 2024, and is launching into Early Access in Spring 2025. From here, our humble team of heroes is developing the project with player feedback at the very core.
This Steam Early Access game is currently not a finished game and may or may not change significantly over the course of development. To learn more about Steam Early Access, please visit the Steam Early Access FAQs.

DISCLAIMER - Coming from an OSRS player, do not go into this game assuming it's another Runescape. You may find yourself disappointed, but once you view Dragonwilds more like "Valheim with Runescape elements" I find that you'll enjoy the game more. So, do I recommend this game?
Short Answer:
If you like games like Valheim you'll enjoy Dragonwilds, but there are some pros and cons in comparison to similar games and in typical runescape fashion, expect long grinds if you like collecting.
Long Answer:
Dragonwilds definitely draws similarities to Valheim in terms of both style and gameplay loop. While there are some aspects of the game I like, there are plenty of parts that detract from my gameplay experience. Visually, the game looks good. Lighting can be an issue at times, especially when transferring between biomes, but for the most part it's good. Stylistically Dragonwilds draws from the original runescape designs but puts a unique spin. Some choices are questionable like the large Abyssal Demons, but others like the armor iterations (mithril, white knight, black knight, etc) are pretty nice looking. Bad news, there seems to be a few audio bugs. The most prominent example involves riding the magic carpet, and you end up getting two different music playing at once which is annoying. Gameplay wise, if you've played valheim you know what to expect. Progression is locked behind quests to slay the boss of every major region, categorized by tier levels. The iconic "numbers go up" philosophy of runescape's skilling is prominent in this game, with certain milestones to power up each skill in a variety of ways. In a rare twist, staying busy in your home base (crafting, cooking, building, etc) is actually also a form of progression as you level their respective skills. While I find the combat system to lack depth currently, magic in the game is one of my favorite aspects. Dragonwilds provide a lot of utility spells that compliment each skill, and are quite unique from what I've seen (conjuring a flying axe? repairing on the go? fishnados? more please). Unfortunately, I find both the exploration and grinds in this game to be tedious. This is compounded in the later regions and especially Dowdun Reach, easily my least favorite region. Starting from Fellhollow onwards, there are shop mechanics that require varying degrees of grinding for their respective currency. You can tell either Jagex is experimenting with adding trading systems or just want different systems for the sake of variety. For some reason, it takes an incredible amount of time to grind out both the materials and currency in Dowdun Reach specifically, and screams "filler content" until the Umbral Sands released. Fellhollow allows you to directly mine for soul fragments, but here there are no alternatives to getting infernal fragments outside of running around killing mobs. The biggest offense, however, is the restriction of building, including building portals for convenience. While nodestones exist to help traverse the region with a central Nexus, most aren't placed in convenient locations and for some reason the Nexus with all nodestone access don't have a teleportation Lodestone itself, so you cannot teleport directly to it outside of the nodestones (please add a Lodestone there Jagex).
What improvements do I want to see?

Allow vestiges (crafting recipes) to have at least 2 methods of obtaining. I should have the option of buying the Shard of Smoky Glass from the Reaper if I happen to grow tired of grinding dozens of Zogres (which coincidentally have one of the longest respawn timers in the game)
The devs did a good job of expediting material grinding by allowing materials to be buyable in the Umbral Sands, but you don't get the same grace with other regions like Dowdun Reach, which are restricted to (understandably) item recipes. I want to see Jagex continue with the shop pool idea in Umbral Sands and introduce the ability to buy lower tier materials from previous regions, like black metal.
Combat is currently lacking in depth, please introduce more unique variety of combat styles (elemental/weapon type weaknesses aren't enough). Mages for example are stuck with 2-handed battlestaves, while Melee have access to daggers, swords, and maces (all 3 of which don't feel especially different in playstyle other than speed) in addition to 2-handed weapons.
Building is fun, but sometimes can be frustrating even with the help of the occulus orb. Alt+scroll wheel should allow objects to go towards/away from the player in a meaningful way, introduce limited terraforming (or something else) to help streamline placement of buildings like farming plots, and please improve (remove) collision when using the free build (making custom builds with no snapping is especially frustrating at times). Also need way more building objects to facilitate more complex and beautiful builds (different tiers of interior decorations like bookshelves are much needed)
Overall, there are a lot of things I like about Dragonwilds and as a survival craft game it's pretty good, but it's far from perfect. You get Runescape levels of grinding without the same satisfaction. It's an early access game, and there are plenty of stuff that Jagex can improve and add over time. Whether you want to join in on the ride and see where the game goes, or wait for a full release, I recommend it if you are looking for a new survival crafting game. As a Runescape player the references and quirky dialogue in quests are in line with the Runescape charm, although I think they can lean more into it by adding more quests or NPCs. As an aside, I want to support this game as a runescape fan. The world of Gielinor is fascinating, and I would love to see what projects Jagex have in store for this IP outside of the MMOs we know and love. Buying and reviewing Dragonwilds is my way of telling the devs there is interest in new games like this.
there will come a poet...
Whoever decided to block achievements if servers are custom - ♥♥♥♥ you very much. Because of that most of gameplay turned into nearly infinitely building and stacking up resources instead of exploring and fighting. At least don't be an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for solo game. Everything else is fine for this kind of game. But the achievements blockage and constant loosing ♥♥♥♥ on death - don't like. Also hunger and thirst should be illegal to add into games.
everything a runescape fan wants in a survival game.
Type A and B with literally the most masculine woman imaginable. disappointing.
valheim could never
fun nothing crazy tbh
