About
RuneQuest: Warlords is a battle-scale turn-based strategy game set in the RuneQuest universe.
Immerse yourself in the rich lore of the world of Glorantha. Become a warlord, master the use of runes and defend your tribe against the incursions of Chaos. Vanquish your enemies using a mix of magic-enhanced strategies and rune-based abilities. Field a diverse army drawing from heroes and creatures alike.

Players are drawn into the rich world of Glorantha, a mystical cube of earth surrounded by the Sramake’s River, where ancient floods still cover much of the land. Set between the lands of Talastar and Dorastor, to the west of Dragon Pass on the Genertela continent, the game’s storyline unfolds during the crucial year of 7/37 (1608) in the Glorantha timeline, encompassing the desperate struggle of the Talastar Tribes, fighting for their very survival against the hordes of Chaos.

The campaign tells the story of Hahlgrim, a tribal champion from Talastar’s Bilings, as he gathers allies - including elves, and even temporary Lunar allies - to push back the invading Chaos hordes from Dorastor. The journey progresses across 18 missions, narrating a story filled with deeds of valor, heroism, cruelty and betrayal.
As the story progresses, players will encounter iconic characters from the Runequest world like Ketil Whiteye, Hakon the Swimmer, Woowander and Ralzakark.

In RuneQuest: Warlords, battles unfold on a grid-based map where terrain and positioning provide real tactical depth.
Each unit holds a 'Zone of Control' over nearby tiles, forcing enemies to engage or maneuver around. Action Points (AP) can be used for moves, attacks, or special abilities, with Heroes gaining two AP for advanced tactics like flanking and spellcasting. Spirit, Rune, and Sorcery magic bring powerful abilities, while Sentry Mode allows units to guard areas automatically. Tactical reactions like Opportunity Attacks and counter-attacks make positioning critical, adding layers of strategy to every move.

Each of the three factions - Talastar, Chaos and Lunar Empire - offers diverse units, each consisting of multiple models ranging from 1 to 7 per unit. These units span a great variety of types from specialized heroes like Chieftain, Howler and Centurion who possess unique abilities and distinctive appearances, to powerful spellcasters such as the Stormwalkers and Broo Shamans. Each faction also boasts heavies and skirmishers units including hybrid warriors equipped for both melee and ranged combat, monsters and artillery, cavalry, and versatile troops like Shadowcats and Broo Marauders. Every model in a unit has its own health points, adding layers of depth to the tactical gameplay.

Magic plays a central role in the game through the ancient and powerful Runes, connected to the Glorantha pantheon of gods. As players progress, heroes strengthen their affinity with specific Runes, unlocking new magical abilities based on their connection to the Gods.
These magic abilities can be instant or sustained, requiring careful management of unit resources. Cult Rune Magic, exclusive to commanding Hero units, grants powerful abilities that provide both short-term advantages and sustained tactical support. Mastering Cult Rune Magic is key to harnessing the full power of Glorantha’s pantheon.

Players can engage in intense tactical battles across a variety of maps, each designed with unique strategic challenges. In the Competitive Arena, they test their skills in replayable scenarios. With three distinct factions to choose from - Talastar, Chaos, and the Lunar Empire - each with its own strengths and playstyle, the game offers diverse matchups and strategies. This multiplayer structure encourages the refinement of tactics and fosters dynamic, strategy-driven battles, fully embracing the strategic essence of RuneQuest: Warlords.

I think it's very Gloranthan, in terms of the fantasy world. It captures the barbarian/Orlanthi and "civilised"/Lunar cultures well, and covers the canonical Hahlgrim's Saga in Dorastor very well. Most units can do some things that feel Gloranthan. I like the art. The plot is interesting even if linear. I like the numerous choices for improving your heroes; the power-tree allows for varied play. (It's not the Runequest RPG rules-wise, but I do not mind at all) Where it fails is in other areas like gameplay. For me, worst of all, the AI enemies are terribly stupid. They roam around seemingly semi-randomly and disengage from fighting often, causing themselves great harm from opportunity attacks. It makes the game feel much less dangerous. The voice acting is dull. I recommend the game for its Gloranthan feel. Otherwise, gameplay-wise it feels like something out of the 2000s.
sorry, love ya guys, but clunky

The game has good premise, but the execution is in need of a bit of love. Many good things, partly even new (I can´t think of a strategy game, where an adjacent unit would attack together, as an additional action), so having to think of new paths towards solutions is nice. But, to stay with above example, the unit performing that extra attack is very, if not the most squishy in the game. It´s damage, even with some skills, is very meh. And this unit (not the main attacker) is running into the counterattack, while often doing negligible damage......So you have an extra, free attack, which is nice and worth strategizing for, but then you see that unit being mercilessly killed time and again....and did I mention, experience is gone after death (each scenario, a unit survives while on the field, adds some experience, independend of actions or units killed). Again something uncommon, which is nice, but in this case works absolutely against wanting to use the other earlier new extra attack thingy...It´s almost as if the people are afraid to introduce something new, and feel the need to nerf it into insignificance before applying it. I would have loved to make this extra attack work, if it was worthwhile (either more damage or more safety), but this way, everytime I look at that unit, I just feel sad. Some scenarios seem to not be tested enough (I had one, where just a dialogue popped up about an extra attacker smashing in some gates, I popped a djinn to contain, attacked one of the new attackers, and finished my turn finishing off the last unit of the main attacker....and poof, Scenario ended with me being lauded for saving all the villagers, even though I just saw new attackers coming on screen....) Some skills seem not to be working (Lady warrior can pop a shield made of wind, which supposedly damages attackers, but seemingly not the attackers in my playthrough;). Missing is an undo function(would be really helpful, as tooltips for skills are quite lacking, I still remember jumping my warrior into the enemy rear, looking to engagefrom both sides, only to discover, that the jump was so long, it had also consumed my action point, even though the skill said not to use action points. I can to tell you, that warrior seemed really impressed with my commanding skills:/...I found out later, that jumpdistance can be extended by making use of actionpoints...) And maybe worst of all the AI is quite limited. The AI loves attacking squishy units, mainly the priestess, and will run there, even though sometimes even 3 opportunity attacks will reduce the attacking unit to insignificance/death. So there is some fresh perspective, but the concept seems not to be thought through as a combined experience. But I end I´m having fun, so a recommendation to try it out. Without any changes though I would wait for a sale.
Fun game with a cool vibe, interesting units and cool missions and lore. Four hours in and looking forward to playing more.
A lot like wh40k battle sector. Pretty good turn based. Story is ok so far not a particularly amazing one but not bad either. I'm not too far into the main story.
If you like Glorantha. It's not Runequest as such.
The last mission is bugged as ♥♥♥♥. Should be fixed I will try again. The game is a nice basic tactical. Worth the price but please fix the issues.
Actual quote from the game "He fought like a shadowcat, but there were too many goatfaces." 10/10
PS 23 hours later I bring a bemol to my enthousiastic evaluation : The ratio Time / Fun in battle isn't always on the good side of balance especially at the beginning. Sounds needs to be improved and in general I'd say that the game needs a good polish :) But I keep feeling that the experience is globaly good Really appreciate the straight way they have to join scenario and battles. Troups are nice and combats are interesting with new features compaired with Battlesector but they kept the good way fights work well. A GIGA PLUS is : if you are found of Runequest universe, you'll love this game, so far, I already see that they respect the lore. We have orlanthis vs chaos with very themed armies. I m sure I will enjoy this game. I changed again my mind. At 35 hours, I went through nearly the whole game and unfortunately it is boring. The beginning hype leaves you quite quickly and missions are fastidious. The maps, sounds and musics are not wonderful. This game needs a serious rework to match with my early estimations. That is sad. I still think that once in sales, it will worth few bucks but nothing more.
