Its a charming platformer with a fun texture swapping mechanic and catchy theme song. I recommend it though I think its unfortunate that the developers went for a deep and involved story with so so much hand holding and npc's which talk way too much. I would rather have liked the Super Mario 64 approach with a little bit of story, an open hub world to explore and doors which require stars to open to progress in the game. This was what the Steam Next Fest demo felt like, so I dont know why the developers decided to change the final game to be this hand holding grandiose story thing..
I love the look of this game. Mechanically it plays fine. I personally don't find the gameplay loop engaging. The swamp mechanic doesn't feel very good. You may find mileage with this game. In my opinion there are considerably better puzzle platformers out there worth your time.
Paper Mario from Temu (the swap mechanic is nice tho)
Super fun to 100%! Really fun puzzles too
What a crazy fun game so far! I can see some inspiration from other games like Banjo Kazooie (which is by no means an insult). The art style is top notch and the fact that the characters are all hand drawn is so amazing. You don't see that kind of style in games much. Can't wait to jump back in and find my marbles!
This was a very fun time. I think the SWAP mechanic is fun and has a lot of clever ways to solve puzzles. This is also a very pretty game. I love the art style and it's very clear inspirations from older games of my childhood, but still very charming. My biggest negative of the game is the sheer amount of dialog and the animations for picking up several of the various collectables in the game. Luckily, they have a speed up mechanic that speeds through dialog and most animations. I also didn't really care for the ending of the story, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see more from the devs. I did have one issue towards the end that seemed like it was going to lock me out of 100% the game, but after collecting the last butterfly I was missing for the third time and not skipping the animation, it finally stuck so I am relieved about that. All in all, it's a fun time, and I'd recommend it to any 3D platform fan. Try the demo at least!
This 3D platformer has style. Great music and art direction, with a cool mechanic that let's you swap the materials of assets in the world1. Nitpicks: - Could benefit from more Banjo/Animal Crossing style speech and less big blocks of text, especially for a vibes based game like this one. - What materials some assets can be swapped to feels somewhat restrictive at times; I found myself wanting to swap colors and materials with objects that were incompatible which, though reasonable from a puzzle/area design perspective, occasionally felt like a wet blanket. - Tough to jump back into; I took a break from this game and reorienting myself felt tougher than one might expect a light-hearted platformer. All-in-all, whether you love 3D platformers or are curious about the vibe of this game, it is an easy recommendation and I am very excited to see more from this developer!
Today’s game: Ruffy and the Riverside I don’t remember where I saw this game, but it’s a niche indie puzzle platformer with a Paper Mario inspired artstyle. The main gameplay focuses around the SWAP, a mechanic allowing you to copy textures from on object and put them onto another. For such a simple concept, this game uses it amazingly! Puzzles feel creative and unique, and the mechanic feels like a true part of gameplay rather than just a gimmick. The game also reminds me of Tear of the Kingdom, where I was finding puzzles and things to do every direction I turned. One of my favourite parts of the game is that almost every puzzle you see you can do from the start. It instead relies on you to figure out what things mean but testing what happens when you change textures. As soon as you figure out one type of puzzle, you’ll know how to do it next time, and it feels good. The story is alright. It’s a semi-cliche “chosen one” story, but the characters are pretty funny. There’s few characters that are actually good people, most have slight tendencies that make them feel flawed in a fun way that doesn’t need to be developed or changed. Now, I haven’t finished this game yet, only halfwayish I’d guess, but I haven’t clicked with a game this quick for a long time. ESPECIALLY for a game I just stumbled across and didn’t spend months waiting for a release. All in all, I recommend this game if you want something not stressful. Puzzles are rewarding mentally and creative.
