How does this only have 30 reviews after a year? Game's amazing. While I've only just started playing, It's seems to be up there with Cave's releases.
This and Crimzon Clover are two best modern Japanese-arcade-like shoot'em ups. Buy it with DLC, OverPower mode is extremely fun! Two unique points of this game: - it's a twin stick! - it's horizontal, so you can comfortably play on a small screens like Switch or Steam Deck.
Nonsensical keyboard controls (no ZXCV), also not remappable. They were fine in pre-Steam release, i dunno why they changed it (great game btw. but come on)
Rolling Gunner has insane bullet hell patterns, excellent audio/visuals and gave me such a rush that I just had to come and leave it a positive rec, despite strongly preferring tamer shmup games. When you die you can just press continue. ..endlessly until you hit the end credits - there is no forced difficulty of any kind imposed on the player. It allows the casuals to experience most of the game and still delivers a challenging shmup for the diehards to master (hardcore shmup fans typically consider "beating a shmup" = beat it without using any continues on its hardest difficulty). I'm not a big fan of shmups that are designed in this oldschool way. I much prefer games that follow Tyrian's lead, by having stages and permanent progress of some kind, like Jamestown or Drainus for example. These are the modern, more accessable style of shmups that I like - but I digress. In Rolling Gunner you have a second gun that you can aim in different directions to your standard one. It's a little clunky/awkward to rotate it while under constant fire, but you can get used too it. There's a DLC which unlocks the ability to use twinstick to control the second gun. ..Anyhow. I adore this game. I'm stunned to see that the Steam port is being slept on with a measily 60 reviews.
I've been 1CCing schmups on and off for the past few years, and my original arcade clear of Rolling Gunner is by far the hardest and most rewarding one yet. I really enjoyed this one - even the 10+ hours of practice runs at the end where I had to grind / tighten everything up to earn the 1CC. Rolling Gunner has a very intuitive scoring system that I've really enjoyed getting into, and I'll keep playing this one for score and eventually clear expert mode. Cannot under-state how nice it is to have rank so clearly communicated ... as it makes practice mode setup very straightforward. The great bullet visibility, visuals overall, and soundtrack made this something I enjoyed going back to, even as I had to grind out runs.
its very short only 6 stages! reminds me of a game called PROGEAR bullet hell
I haven't even played for more than 2 hours. However, I did a couple clears using continues, and I can tell I am going to have a lot of fun trying to 1cc this. Steam is telling me that controllers are not supported, but my xinput gamepad works perfectly, so I don't know what's going on there.
Amazing horizontal shmup great introduction for the genre and also the OST slaps
