Short Review
Bite Night is a short comedic horror game about working a gas station night shift while a monster who is bad at being scary bothers you. The aesthetic works, the ending was enjoyable for me, and I can see why it has overwhelmingly positive reviews. But the humor mostly didn't click for me, and spending the bulk of the runtime doing mindless tasks just to set up a one-note joke wasn't exactly a fun time. Worth a look on sale, but don't go in expecting much. Not recommended, for the most part.
Full Review
Bite Night comes from MyGrandfather Games and runs about 30 minutes. The premise is that you're a gas station attendant on a night shift and a monster has shown up, except the monster is incompetent and more annoying than actually scary. It's a comedic spin on first-person horror, and with an overwhelmingly positive rating across over 500 reviews, clearly it's landing for a lot of people. For me, it mostly didn't. The aesthetics. The retro first-person look fits the game well, and the atmosphere is solid for what it's trying to do. It has the right visual vibe for a short comedic horror game, and the setting of a rural gas station at night is used well enough. No complaints here. The humor and gameplay. The comedy is really what the whole game hinges on, and for me, it just wasn't there. I didn't find myself laughing, I didn't even find myself blowing air out of my nose in mild amusement. The tasks you do to progress the story are pretty mindless and feel less like gameplay and more like busywork to pad the runtime before the punchline arrives. For a game built almost entirely around its sense of humor, that's a problem. The ending was the one exception; it was actually pretty unexpected, and I enjoyed it. But getting there through 25 minutes of tasks that didn't particularly entertain me made it feel like a lot of setup for a small payoff. Overall. Bite Night isn't a bad game, and I understand why it has the reception it does. The concept is charming, the aesthetic works, and if the humor lands for you, you'll probably have a good time with it. It just didn't land for me, and when the humor is the entire point, that's kind of a dealbreaker. On sale for around a dollar, it's easy enough to recommend as a strange little game, but it's not something I'd go out of my way for. An hour of silliness with mouse hunting and some occasional periods of customer service. Adorable little Vamp. 10/10 would Bleh again. Wasn't great on Steam Deck for the parts requiring the E button but worked just fine on laptop with xbox Controller
