However, I don't think many people that are not already into board games would love it. At its core Roll player is a dice drafting make-best-with-what-you-have kind of game, wrapped in a thin veil of a character creation theme. I mentioned, that non-board gamers might not love it and this is simply because it has no progression and relatively simple gameplay that gets repetitive quickly. As solo player all you can do is best your high score or battle a weak AI. The game DOES support online multiplayer with both real time and async play, but it wasn't very active from what I saw (still there was at least one match going on). The game is free of bugs, has nice music, and the UI is decent, but not perfect as some clicks could've been easier. The biggest flaw is the lack of the DLC expansion which adds the much needed variety. All in all, it's a good digital adaptation but may not appeal to gamers unfamiliar with board games or are used to the complexity of modern board games.
Highlighted mechanics
• Dice drafting • Dice placement
The positive
+ Very good adaptation of the physical board game + Clean UI and good music
The neutral
* Some buttons are too far apart and no shortcut to support faster play
The negative
- AI isn't that great - Gets repetitive quickly playing solo - Lacks the variety of complexity of modern board games
Conclusion:
Very good board game adaptation of a decent dice drafting game with a very focused gameplay that might not match modern board game's complexity and variety. Recommended, 7/10.
Good, but wish there was a colour blind mode
Decent implementation of the physical board game. Achievements are *incredibly* grindy, though. So much so that I probably can't actually recommend the game. I can't bring myself to give it a negative review, in the hope that the devs change the (frankly terrible) grind achievements.
This is a wonderful gem of a board game and well implemented. The only thing I would wish for is ability to specify the extra options in the rule book when starting a game. Would also like to see an extra set of portraits to help liven up the game in variety a bit. Other then that, it is fairly faithful to the board game. Based on RND you are assigned a sex, class, background goal, and alignment goal. The aim is to collect and assign dice to your attributes to meet scoring goals while collecting various cards that provide actions, advantages, or additional end game scoring. Using some cards will affect your alignment which can grant you additional score points or penalties. Your background will highlight some stat boxes on your class sheet for you to fill out with specific dice color to achieve additional scoring. Once all players fill their class state rows with dice, the game ends and scores calculated. There's a bit of strategy and opportunities to plan out actions for later turns once you get the hang of the game. Game can be fairly quick so its something you can play in short bursts. The mix of fantasy characters, equipment, cards, and lots of dice really hit that board game itch. I highly recommended for those who enjoy board/card/dice games like One Deck Dungeon.
I would recommend this game if you like dice rolling, strategy, or own the board (like I do). This plays just like the board game. In a solo game you get to choose your race, class, backstory, and alignment or randomize everything. The local game you can choose your race then the game selects a color class in which you will have two choices, and then it will automatically assign you a backstory and alignment. I would have been nice to choose these but two players can't choose the same color class, backstory, or alignment. There is also online play but I haven't been able to try that out yet. Once you have choose race, class, backstory, and alignment the game begins with a roll of 6 dice and will place them how you wish on your attributes. Then in each round you will roll 3 to 5 dice depending on the amount of players. You will choose a dice and place that on your attributes, then resolve the effect of the attribute and move to the market. The market you will be able to buy cards or discard for gold. Once all of the players have purchased or discarded a card the round starts all over again until all attributes are full. Then the game will count the amount of stars that was earned and a winner will be declared. This is a slow relaxing game full of thought and strategy as you can increase die rolls or swap dices on your attributes and nail the goals set on the game board for more stars. It's kind of like chess this way, sit back with a drink of choice plan your next moves and see if you can prevent your enemy from getting what they need.
Enjoyed a couple of hours in the game, I just wish that we could take our character on some sort of an adventure afterwards.
The game is fun but needs the expansions :/
Cannot decrease the value of dice while performing the constitution action. Left click, right click, nothing allows me to decrease the value. A basic game function shouldn't either not function or be so complicated for what should be a simple control.
