Considering I bought Rogue Monster Rush in a bundle, and it wasn’t the main reason I bought the bundle... ... it was good that I installed this first and gave it a go. Rogue Monster Rush is a surprisingly pleasant experience. Rogue Monster Rush is predominantly a tower defence game, with a lot of tacked other mechanics on it: it has creature collecting through hatching eggs, it has roguelite elements of randomized islands and permanent progression through upgrades, which are applied to your monsters, to your base and to your abilities. And maybe the smallest of them all, player has their own abilities to use while the tow- I mean monsters wallop the bots. I am not the most involved or passionate tower defence player, so I cannot go too deeply about genre conventions, so I summarize why I like this game in three points: 1) How map will build up. In the beginning, there are player’s base island, few treasure islands and a boss island, operating as objective where to gun for. Each wave begins after player places a new tile into the sea, essentially creating a new map every single time. This also means that player can strategize how they apply their defences and which key points to defend. 2) Permanent progression is good, but there is one caveat to it. However, empowering yourself and your monsters gives a good feeling of progression. 3) Minigun. I could’ve said ‘player abilities’ here, but minigun turning player into pseudo-FPS for a bit is gloriously stupid and I love it. In essence, it gives players more to do other than “place a monster, place a tile, sit and watch”. The minor nitpicks are that permanent progression also means grinding... which may not incite you. And outlines of island blocks are bit choppy, even if it is minor. Otherwise, everything else goes from passable to good. Worth of full price, or grab it with some other game in a bundle.
---see where this game landed on my tower defense tier list beneath this rec!--- This is a pretty well done tower defense with some similarities to PokePath TD. It's a very grindy and repetitive TD, where at some point you will probably get like me and be like "well that was good, but I'm done with the repetition". I should point out that this is not an idler like PokePath, which was that games way of making the grind and repetition accessable to some. This games way of trying to make the grind more interesting is by going heavy on the roguelite aspect. With each run you earn currency to upgrade your creatures, spells and other things. Once you max out a creatures upgrades, you can choose to evolve them, with makes them a tiny bit stronger and removes all of the upgrades you had spent on them, causing you to need to improve them again. For the first few hours at least, this works for me and seeing my spells and creatures get more powerful each run was quite fun. There aren't many creatures (I think 16?), however I felt deterred from switching my team up, because the upgrades I had already put into my current team would've then felt like a waste. It's enough time and effort strengthening one team, so trying to improve all of the other creatures at the same time seemed like a daunting and tedious endeavor. The progression, whilst fun for a while does ultimately feel flawed longer-term. I like the audio (the sounds more than the music), though the sound effects are a bit loud compared to the music on the default settings (so I fixed it in the games audio menu). The announcer and shopkeeper voice actors were a nice touch, kudos to them. Not sure how much more of this I intend to play. The game is fun ...until it isn't anymore. The roguelite aspect of it succeeds at first, but at some point it's just too much of the same thing over and over. If you're a big fan of random generated runs in Tower Defense, my favourite of these thus far is Tower Tactics: Liberation, so check that one as well. ===================== My Tower Defense Tier List (PC) ===================== -Not an objective list, purely how much I enjoyed the games- -Played many more than this, but many forgettable TD’s I have.. “forgotten” when making this list. S Tier (Amazing): X-Morph Defense* | Warcraft 3 (custom TD maps)* | Orcs Must Die!* | Orcs Must Die! 2* | Orcs Must Die! 3*# | A Tier (Great): Dungeon Warfare* | Plants Vs. Fun TD game with good variety of monsters. I enjoy the tile system to "design" your own map layout. Overall a very enjoyable game.
This is a great little game in a slick package of polish and presentation. It somehow feels both modern and nostalgic at the same time. Gameplay clarity, status effects, and other important information are all very clear (except for the lava biome), which can be a challenge for this genre. The monsters/units are cute and distinct from one another, and the deep upgrades and customization options are mechanically interesting and keep runs feeling fresh. The tile placement and restrictions on units per tile add some nice tactical variety and strategy to the mix, and overall the pacing and build up of each run feels great. My only real criticism has less to do with what the game is, and more to do with what it marketed itself as. I kind of got sold on this idea of Pokemon + TD + Roguelite but the monster taming/capture is really just a light thematic wrapper around what other TDs would just consider Tower upgrades. And the Roguelite elements are probably the weakest part of the game, where the only variance comes from mid-Run monster upgrades where there is usually a mathematically best choice that just increases stats. I just picked the highest rarity option, and/or the upgrade for whatever monster I had built most up to that point. Discovering the eggs and placing different island tiles were neat but they hardly justify calling this game a roguelite. That said, regardless of what the game was touted as being, it ended up being a well polished, tightly scoped little package of a game, and I plan on putting in another 10 hours or more before I call it a day.
Still Early in but generally really enjoy this game it gives me everything i want for a decent price and the Devs are active and working on it. They are also active in the discord replying and talking to players looking for feedback if you like TD and monster collection Give it a try. don't pick it up expecting Triple A. but its 100% a fun filled game to take up plenty of your time. Will update with more hours in!
Great fun tower defense. Lots of little doods to unlock and they all feel decently unique. Its a joy unlocking a new monster and trying to find some excuse to use it with a new team and I love the looks of every monsters evolution. There are only 4 maps but each one is definitely unique in the way you have to build around the mechanics: like the second map is effectively a mob rush that can be stopped with tank killers or by whittling them down with aoe attacks. The hatchery idea is neat, but frankly it is kind of grindy when you can only hatch one egg at a time withing roughly 7ish waves of a map. I am super excited for an endless mode though, but by then I still wont have all the monsters unlocked. Really though Rogue Monster Rush is a ton of fun and even if it is not the hardest tower defense game, it makes up for with how simple it is to set up a new team comp just for funsies rather than worrying about winning.
Please add an option to tune down the flashing effects
super fun and super addictive 10/10
I do not understand the mixed reviews. This TD game is well ahead of the genre. - Solid progression system -Varied towers and spells, each with their own skill trees (and prestige system for towers at least) -Rewarding combos -Small dev group but deeper yet functional difficulty grind, more polished than I anticipated I am not sure I understand the complaints over the egg grind being capped. I find the egg hatching to be fair timing between every few runs. While some builds may be better over others, that is what content balancing patches are for (and also play what is more enjoyable in your runs). I highly recommend this game for TD fans. The price is fair even at full price.
Noch nie ein so gutes TD gespielt. Bin jetzt lvl 94 und nicht ein Gedanken an Aufhören verschwendet.
