This game really came out of nowhere, but it is an exceptional take on RoboCop. If you are a fan of the movies and ever wondered how a proper game would play out, this is absolutely for you. Teyon did an incredible job respecting the source material. It was amazing to see Old Detroit fully realized with familiar faces from years ago.
The RoboCop Power Fantasy & Story
The developers completely nailed the feeling of being RoboCop himself, which is the most important part of the experience. You move slowly but possess insane reaction times. I really appreciated that they didn't hold back on the gore. A weapon as powerful as Robo's service pistol should feel devastating, and the shooting never gets dull. The ability to scan and see enemies through walls before they emerge adds to the fun. Melee attacks, grabs, and throws feel incredibly powerful and are stupidly fun to execute. The dash ability you unlock later on is a total game changer. The story is completely original, taking place between the second and third films. It is a very decent narrative with a few solid plot twists that I enjoyed. A new crime lord emerges, and your investigation slowly uncovers his identity and motives.
Gunplay & Combat Mechanics
The team went all in on showcasing the raw power of the emblematic Auto-9. Being able to switch fire modes on the fly is a great addition. Most objects in the environment can be destroyed, including concrete pillars. Since you cannot duck or hide behind traditional cover, you have to utilize the environment while soaking up damage like a tank. One incredible mechanic is the ability to throw objects, which can easily turn the tide of a fight. You can hurl almost anything, including trash cans, hammers dropped by enemies, mines, and gas tanks. My absolute favorite feature is grabbing an enemy and throwing them into a crowd. It knocks everyone to the floor without killing the crowd instantly, and it never gets old. Because of these combined mechanics, the action stays creative in every single room.
Poor Optimization & Upscaler Troubles
On the technical side, the game is poorly optimized and taxes hardware quickly. While enclosed environments run fine, larger areas and boss fights can cause the frame rate to drop heavily. The combination of explosions and intense shooting triggers noticeable stutters that disrupt the gameplay. I played most of the campaign using FSR and experienced this firsthand. It was brutal at times. I never expected that switching to TSR would fix almost all of these issues. The game seems to struggle with standard upscalers. I cannot speak for DLSS, but FSR was a terrible experience here. Setting TSR to 50% on the slider instantly brought stability with almost zero visual sacrifice. I only wish I had stumbled upon that Steam guide sooner.
Final Thoughts
RoboCop: Rogue City is a true love letter to the films. Teyon made a massive impression on me, and I will definitely follow their future work closely. The game is packed with references that enhance the feeling of patrolling Old Detroit. The interesting and unique side quests between major missions keep the pacing fresh. Even if you focus purely on the main story, the missions remain highly diverse. You visit many distinct locations, investigate crimes, and fight impossible odds. It perfectly emphasizes the power fantasy of being part human and part machine. While the poor performance can hinder the experience, a little bit of tweaking can make it run significantly better. I thoroughly enjoyed the game from start to finish. Even if you have never watched the movies, the story is well-explained, original, and absolutely worth playing.
Rating: 9/10
I was not expecting this to be as awesome and satisfying as it has been so far. This is absolutely a game that punches WAY over its weight class and it 100% worth a buy
I think it's fun and I like to play it
Jogo curto e excelente para quem quer aprender a jogar FPS
Nails the aesthetic of the original movie, and it serves great narrative accompaniment to the first film. From a gameplay perspective, it's pretty cathartic as an FPS during shooting segments. The open world segments are the weakest part of it, and the RPG elements could have been streamlined a bit given the overall scope of the game. Voice acting is a bit hit and miss, but it gets the job done. Overall, the positives far outweigh the negatives. If you are a fan of the franchise and shooters in general (Deus Ex and the OG Doom particularly) then I strongly recommend playing it.
Really enjoying this so far. Simple mechanics, but I appreciate that. It looks much better than I expected. Action is solid. Definitely going to see it through to the end.
