«Robbie Swifthand and the Orb of Mysteries»
This is a tedious puzzle-platformer that errs more on the side of being trial and error, reflex driven challenges with a micro-second of leeway on the timing before something crushes you, stabs you, slices you, burns you and so on, and so on, and sooooo onnnnnnnn. Each stage in the game is a self-contained area that takes about a minute or less to complete. That is, at least, when you've had 10 (or a 100) or more tries at it, and have memorised every single little thing that can kill you AND have also figured out the puzzle element of the stage. Given that progression can sometimes be linked to the traps, such as fallen stone-work being a step towards higher platforms, you can't figure out a level through wits alone. You don't know what's going to collapse until the moment happens. You don't know that there's killer spikes on the floor because they're either hard to see or totally obscured. And to be honest: they're not really mentally challenging puzzles once you've run the gamut of things you trigger along the way. It's too tedious to be rewarding as an intellectual exercise, when 90% of it is just remembering all the obstacles and then trying to achieve pixel perfect, timing perfect, jumps. There's rarely been any satisfaction in "solving" them during the slower sequences because they're so easy, and then they have "special" fast action sequences where you're outrunning a giant buzz-saw and I can't even figure out how to finish the second time I encountered one. At the point in time when you have mere seconds to react, and there's a highly specific solution in terms of where you go, and when, the game decides to suddenly be more obscure and tricky with it's puzzle element. Or it might be the case that I have figured out what to do, and it's just that the timing is so insane to get right that I keep failing it, and end up assuming I'm doing something wrong. Thus it becomes massively frustrating whichever way I look at it. Every..... Second..... Of...... Every..... Level...... Fine if you like Super Meat Boy, or others of it's ilk, but if you don't: it's not fun, it's ♥♥♥♥. The laser focus on bite-sized challenges, and each one is like chowing down on broken glass, rusty nails, and some slimy dog poop. There's never a break from this tedium, it's hardcore or nothing. Though without the flow of a long scrolling level, without the exploration of a game like Ori or Hollow Knight, I just don't find there's the same satisfaction to what is essentially very similar game-play. And there's certainly more thoughtful puzzle games out there, that also manage to be fairly devious platformers too. It looks great, runs well, and plays well - if you're a masochist. If you're not a masochist: it's a bit of a horrible game and not much fun to play.
Now this I've really enjoyed playing - it definitely gets a big +recommendation from me :D You play as the nimble Robbie Swifthand, going through levels with the aim of collecting an orb, throwing it into a portal and reaching the exit, while avoiding cleverly placed and calculated traps and hazards. One hit = death and level restart D: It's a precision-platformer, but often feels like a puzzle where you're working out timings and a route to best avoid traps. It is challenging and you'll die alot, but with observation, planning, persistance and some experimentation you can develop a sequence that'll get you to the next level. After playing through the levels in the EA version, I would return to one level and just spend time figuring new things out. What if I do this? What's the easiest/quickest/most repeatable way to get past this section? And then worked to come up with a sequence that flows nicely and gets you through the level speedily. I really enjoyed this :) Very importantly, Robbie is real nice to control. He's not floaty, or sticky, just nimble with a great jump arc (makes me think of a flea xD). As part of his base abilities he has a normal jump and a crouch-jump (super jump), and you have fine control over both depending on how long you hold the jump button. He also has an orb toss that's simple to perform but takes a little getting used to: hold the orb throw button and release to throw (hold it longer for a full-power throw). The store page suggests the use of a gamepad but I played with a keyboard. I'm thinking KB would work out to be a better control method but take note I'm not a pad player. Continuing with Robbie, I also like the attention that has been made to his animations. There's the Pixar-like run, the nicely captured jump animation but also the way his face and eyes react to traps or other events, and the catch-your-breath animation after you've been jumping for a while - nice touches. In addition to all that, I really appreciate the other work the devs have done here: the beautiful artwork & lighting, the visual & audio fx, the music, the humour, rebindable keys (thank you!), graphic settings (thanks!) - all make an effective combination. So to echo the top of the review, I recommend the game and highly recommend it if you're a persistant player who likes challenges (looking at my Steam pal SkyStarMania here >.> ). It just really clicked with me since the time I happened to see its gif over on GameJolt and decided to try the demo... (Don't miss the demo on Steam, btw) So good job, Pixel Reign! Congrats for the well managed Early Access and the great communication throughout. <3 (Are the controls on the store page gonna be default?? M & N rather than R.CTRL and Enter?? Have you guys been smoking from the Orb of Mysteries?? o.O xD) Looking forward to seeing the new stuff and how you've put things together in the release build! :)
Even though i'm a person who doesn't really play platformer games but this one, i gotta say, it STOLE MY HEART! First things first, the story: So you play as a greedy thief who is summoned by a little spirit, it seems like you are a hero but Robbie doesn't seem to really care about it 'cus all he wants is the reward. For me this one is really funny, original and true (since i'm a little bit tired of always play the all justice hero. As you continue with the game more of the story and what is actually going on is being reveled, want some spoilers? Well lets just say in the second world you come across with one more spirit. Now lets go to the game mechanics/handling: At first i tried to play with the keyboard why? 'Cus deep inside i enjoy getting angry! But for real, yes it is possible to play with the keyboard but it makes things difficult, well at least for me it was but i do believe it has to do with what you're most used to play with, as soon as i played with my controller everything was AWESOME. Music/Sounds: In love <3 I suggest you play with your headphones oooonn, in order to cancel any other sounds and be able to focus to the really great sounds and music of this game. Visualization: The visuals are more than just pleasing, bright, decorative, love how the grass moves when you run through it, the light reflection on the walls, you know all these little details that secretly satisfies your soul. I found the level design smart 'cus of the way they cover some traps, it makes you to actually pay attention and look around for ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING (you know keep your brain awake). Overall it is a game that you will die a lot and it will give you a heavenly satisfaction for beating the levels and be like "in your face! I'm the master of this temple!!" (yeah i yelled that). I 100% recommend this game, even for the younger audience, why? Cus it will give you that lil extra push to actually think of what you have to do and it will challenge you and that's more than just good! Score: 10/10 Keep up the good job guys! Now excuse me as i go play the insane mode 'cus i just want that one achievement uugh!
This is one of those hidden gems of a platforming game that I was lucky to come across. Robbie Swifthand is a trap platformer where the goal in each level is to get an orb to throw at a certain location to unlock the exit. Trap games like IWBTG and Cat Mario are old concepts that are not really seen too often for some reason, but this game does it right. Every level is a test of memory, precision, and timing, and every level feels rewarding to beat. I haven't really played a lot of trap platformers and I thought I wouldn't like it that much due to the inherent trial and error, but I had a blast. The bosses are quite challenging too, but not too frustrating considering platformer bosses tend to be not so great in general. Instead, they're satisfying as well as having great songs to accompany them. It has some depth to the control that takes some learning, but since you have to beat worlds to unlock new abilities, it introduces them gradually to you. At first you can only jump, crouch jump, ledgegrab, and throw. Later on you get a double jump and then a short horizontal hover, and the levels make good use of your abilities. Overall a fun experience. Even the few parts that were a bit awkward (minecart levels) I really looked forward to, because although it is hard to control, the levels were a nice change of pace and fun to play still.
Brutal fan. Clever level design gets you rekt time after time. 350 deaths and counting
