Genuinely adore this game. 100% recommend if you enjoy either social- or building sims. I don't remember how or why I discovered this game, maybe a feverdream, but I'm so happy I did. Got it for the social sim elements but stayed because, uh oh, turns out I actually really love building/automation formations and decorating. So thank you for making me discover a new favourite genre by mistake, very cool. (It's not perfect but the sheer amount of joy I've gotten from this means I straight up do not care, it's great.)
An eclectic game to be sure. It taps into a whole lot of genre, which can make it a bit of a confused mess a times, but in the end is still a fun, worthwhile game. River Town Factory is a blend of Factory building automation, stardew valley relationship building, and basic 2d combat in a Wuxia setting. If you only want one of these things, there are better games out there, but that's not the point. This game is for people who want all three mushed together. Factory building: Factory building is clearly inspired by Satifactory and Factorio. The buildings and recipes take clear "inspiration" from Satisfactory, with the building input/outputs and splitters functioning identical to Satisfactory. This brings its own challenges as it translates to a 2d grid where you can only use underground belts a la Factorio to transport items. Logistical challenges can take up a significant amount more space for belt work, which is one of the unique challenges you'll be tackling in this game. In addition, the resource limitations will also be different. In both Satisfactory and Factorio, you have pretty much unlimited resources as long as you take the time to explore. In River Town Factory, you'll be able to buy locations that produce a set amount of resources per day. You'll quickly find yourself using all the available resources before you're able to buy the next tier to expand those resource nodes. You can't simply overproduce basic resources and count on your systems to max out, you will have to pay attention to the inputs as well. Relationships/Town: There are a bunch of townspeople and relationships you can build with them. There's a basic gift giving system, with events at different relationship levels. It's not complicated, and it really shouldn't be. I think the biggest issue is that you don't really feel like your character is a part of the town. In Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon, I often found myself spending a lot of time in the town simply because there was stuff to do there. There's not much to actually do in the town in River Town Factory. Most of the time you're on your land building the factory or exploring the world. You pretty much just need to drop by the town for quests. There is so much less face time with the characters. You never see them out in the overworld. You have to go out of your way to form a relationship, whereas in other games it feels a lot more natural as something you do in the course of your day to day life. There are seasonal events as well, most of which come with little minigames. These are fun little distractions, and can lead to some nice rewards like martial arts manuals, but are not that important. Combat: You'll also be doing a lot of combat, including protecting the town from monsters. Combat is pretty basic with an attack and a special attack. It's fun to learn new martial arts and try them out, though the combat itself is very simple, with most enemies just walking to you and damaging on contact. I enjoyed the combat, but I would not call it deep or engaging. Final thoughts: The idea of a wuxia factory stardew valley is really what drew me in. In the end, it delivered. It had engaging enough factory building that kept me interested, and the relationships and combat broke up the monotony when I didn't feel like building more automation. It's clearly not as polished as the standouts in these genres, and it has some awkward translations. But despite these flaws, the game as a whole is quite fun, and definitely a recommendation to fans of factory games and wuxia.
