Versus shmup that feels the closest to a traditional arcade shmup out of this type of game I've played (compared to say Twinkle Star Sprites which is more puzzle-like and has a lot of unique quirks + neogeo slowdown). Single player is pretty solid too and there are difficulty modes to match any level of player. Multiplayer games especially on the highest difficulty can get really hectic with the bullet patterns resulting in fun improvised dodging. Highly recommended to fans of the genre if just for this. Netcode works nicely with input delay not being introduced unless you're controlling a boss form. You can easily play across continents with little issue, and bosses having their control nerfed is honestly justified for most of them. There is an equipment system which sounds bizarre but in my experience overall makes the game better. The baseline ships feel a bit underpowered to clearing out enemies. While if you are playing with powered up shot + return bullets (these cause enemy kill chains like TSS, or deal tactical damage to bosses!) you can get up to crazy enemy patterns as the game keeps getting harder the longer you survive. Super fun in PVP matches. For the past few years there has been a japanese & international group playing online every Saturday @ 9pm JST for a few hours. The longevity of that group should be some proof to this being a hidden gem of a game.
This is essentially Phantasmagoria of Flower View with proper controller support. I don't think there's more than I can say. Okay, for those who are unfamiliar with Touhou Project, Phantasmagoria of Flower View is a bullet hell concept where two players go head-to-head, with the main goal of the game being to get the other player to die from an overwhelm of bullet spam. To achieve this goal, you shoot down as much things as possible to build up a combo meter which in turn summons up portals on the enemy's screen to throw even more death at his or her general direction. On top of creating portals on the enemy screen, you also have chargable special attacks where you can spawn character-specific bullets rather than generic mooks to attack the enemy and at 100% meter, you can summon a boss on the enemy's screen! The main difference between Phantasmagoria of Flower View and Rival Megagun is that the boss is an actual player. Oh who am I kidding, if you're reading this review, you're probably a fan of bullet hell games and I strongly recommend this game for the merit of being a solid attempt into bringing the SHMUP genre into a PVP setting. Oh, and even if you have already played TH09, I still say that you should get this game because... A) The bosses are playable B) You can slow yourself down by gently tilting the analog stick C) Much better controller support than literally every Touhou game out there D) Setting up online matches for PoFV is a bloody chore. Steam integration is where it's at
Tons of fun, way better than TSS or PoFV. There's so many possible modes that are all uniquely fun, I lost count. I wish I knew the conditions for the Damage Up upgrade though, because when I play the German META, I'm at a disadvantage. Unless they agree to adjust the rules.
Vertical PvP gallery shooter. Score chains and defeat your opponent. Good ship variation with configurable loadouts. Play as a boss ship! Level up and collect gear. Awesome retro graphics and music. GET IT.
Game is amazing; Netcode fantastic! Gen is OP 10/10 would get flamebroiled again
VICIANTE!
Rival Megagun is a fun multiplayer shoot'em up for local and online matches. It looks great and plays quite well. The single player campaign is alright but gets a bit repetitive, good for practice though. Multiple characters and game styles to choose from. Suitable for shmup beginners and experts.
