Rime Berta is a 5 hours game with 30-40 hours of tedious busywork. It's an RPG with a bland and uninteresting, not to mention barely present, story. It's a strategy game where the prevailing strategy is almost always "Have more level". It's a tactics game where you can't have a frontline and the enemy doesn't know how to pick targets or walk properly. The final boss is absurd, not because it's "difficult", but more because it essentially forces you to grind *even more* in order to beat it, because it will do damage to you that far exceeds your own, and has health several times higher than yours. THis is a poorly balanced, barebones, unappealing husk of a game that serves only to make me wish it was something better. In the time it's taken me to go through the rigmarole of its barely present content, I've been bored almost the entire time. At first, the gameplay was interesting, and the story novel enough to maintain my focus - but after spending hours after hours casting the same skills at empty squares, telling units to wait so that they can all use up their power points to gain 10% of a level, to then repeat again, and again, and again - all the while farming levels for classes in order to try to preserve some of my sanity, because levelling skills up to upgrade your class is an excelllent idea, when it doesn't take *hours* to do it. RIme Berta has so much grind, it vastly eclipses the entire rest of the game. I've spent over 4x the actual playtime farming in order to be able to finish this heap of garbage, farming for characters, for achievements, that any appeal or charm this game once had has been lost to me. I take some small solace in the fact that, ultimately, if you just wanted to beat this game (don't bother), you'd still have to undertake about 66% of what I did to do it - entirely because the final boss is so ridiculously overtuned, likely in a succesful but bad-faith attempt to pad the runtime of this below mediocre product. I don't mind grindy games. I love strategy games, and RPG's, so some part of me is deeply saddened to say that this game is abysmal and I truly despise it. It's been a long, long time that I've felt the desire to cheat solely because of boredom instead of difficulty - and it's perhaps the only product in my recent memory where I wish I'd found that way, because the time I would've saved would have been better spent doing literally anything else. This game isn't worth your time. It will make other things seem like worthwhile endeavors by comparison. Even if you love RPG's, Strategy games, Anything like that - this game is a hollow mockery of the very concepts of such ideas. Take my advice - leave. Don't come back. What is here isn't worth it, and it will never be.
If you like FFTactics Advanced. Or NPCs joining you. -Turn based combat. -Good music. Then this is for you. Super cute. Many names. Completion rate challenge.
This is an actually Japanese JRPG with turn based tactical combat. The game features retro 2D pixel graphics but presented on 3D maps. Control a bunch of cutesy anime characters in some story that has something to do with a tower but nobody is really going to care. The game features Twitter integration, which nobody wanted or asked for, ever. I know decent PCs are kind of unpopular in Japan, but releasing a game in 2014 that doesn't even have widescreen? Or even 1080p support? Let's think about this for a minute... the developers integrated their game with Twitter because they thought that was more important than, you know, making the game for PCs a bit more modern than 2003. This game falls beneath the minimum standards for any PC game, I can't recommend it. Also, $21.50 for a game that doesn't even have HD resolution support? Come on.
Rime Berta: The Hallows of Wishes
https://store.steampowered.com/app/312600/Rime_Berta/ Developer: NEXT-SOFT+ Publisher: AGM PLAYISM Original Language(s): Japanese Available Voice Language(s): N/A Available Text Language(s): English
Review
Rime Berta is the story of Livia, a young girl ascending a mystical tower in order to reach the wish-granting Hallows at its peak, and use its powers to save her village. As her village was descended from the tower's original guardians, Livia has the power to communicate with the puppet protectors within, some of which choose to join Livia and fight their kin out of curiosity for what's beyond their floor. However, the tower's current guardians will not let Livia ascend without a proper challenge, and the Hallows at the end has a mind of its own that might twist Livia's wish if she cannot prove herself. Gameplay is mainly a Tactical RPG, with some light visual novel sections as Livia encounters the tower's guardians and a couple of unique puppets. There are no permanent consequences to a unit falling in battle. and every battlefield can be replayed, with one of that battle's foes randomly joining Livia after the fight. With the exception of three specific "Guide" puppets, all the characters Livia can recruit are generic and lacking personality, but they can be sacrificed in order to give other units a boost to their stats. Regular puppets also have the ability to promote their class after learning the required skills, but skill growth is not connected to regular experience; rather, a unit must use their current skills repeatedly in order to level them up and unlock new ones. As the difficulty curve is not consistent, this form of grinding will occur frequently in even a casual player's run, and will inevitably lead many players too dissatisfied to continue and witness the story's conclusion. However, it still has its merits, and fans of the genre will still find some genuine entertainment from this title if they are willing to sink a few hours into it. at first, wtf with this game.. similar to final fantasy tactics.. but.. 1. there's no visual difference between your unit and enemy's 2. grindy AF, either leveling or change class 3. the illustration not great '_') sorry.. 4. the UI quite annoying (switch, current status of the character, etc) it's better if the dev copy directly from FF/FFT series instead of inventing on their own, lack of explanation of what does this do
I wanted to like this game, I really did, but I find myself in the unfortunate position where I do not believe I can recommend this game. There were a few factors that led me to this opinion. The first being the lack of information available in game through the UI or menus, meaning you would need to leave the game so you can find and open the manual every time you can't remember exactly what a stat does or what a certain Condition is. The lack of any sort of tutorial or tutorial-like instruction I can find anywhere in the game itself. The lack of default keybindings for keyboards, as well as the inability to map Enter or Esc due to the nature of the remapping window not confining the key presses to the currently selected input zone. The limited Resolution options. The artstyle is fine in the battle screens, but detract from the cutscenes due their fairly low quality character art. (It doesn't need to be super high quality stuff, but I would have liked it to be better than it is.) The writing in the game is functional, but I noticed that even in the very first scene of a New Game an entire sentence was repeated within the same paragraph, and that the manual and game both have a number of spelling errors running through them. In most of my battles, about half of the AI in the fight moved towards me while the other half decided to sit around and do nothing while I whittled their allies down one or two at a time as I slowly moved across the map. This seemed to be more likely to happen on Melee AI characters like the Warriors or Thieves. The issue I had where the game ignored my SFX settings entirely and played all combat sounds at full volume even when set to 0. While I didn't end up finishing the game, the systems in place for leveling the character skills and the comments of others have ended up with me being less than enthused about the idea of grinding up the Skills on every character for (probably) hours just to finish a 20 fight campaign. In short: There are a number of issues I have with the game and while none of them are gamebreaking, I do not feel I will be coming back to finish this.
40/80 is my cheevo rate for this game *and* my rating of this game. My complaints: - Got throug the campaign and still not sure what difficulty level slider does. - Was never able to class change into a bow master, despite meeting the criteria. Thief or Archer, that's it (Thief did have options to change, though). - The last battle is brutal even on easy: insane HP on the boss, move-canceling reactions on support. Plus the
VOLCANO MAGIC
. - Story is as "meh" as they say. My compliments: - Designing and actualy making a playable battle system without items. - Multiple classes to change to with *straightforward* requirements. - Every ??? skill ( one that's not been unlocked yet) also has deducible requirements. YOu *can* put 2 and 2 together to know what exactly to do if you want to unlock a skill. - Dungeons are different enough and make certain classes shine more than others on certain maps. - The game's not pretending its story is something grandiose and elaborate. It serves its purpose - just like in those days of CRT RPGs. P.S. The art has been bashed enough times, I won't do that. The only place the art matters is battle. And those "battle sprites" are just fine.
