So I really wanted to like this game..... And I do! I figured Id give this a try not expecting it to be all that since it's very early access and cheap, boy was I surprised by a well thought out, fun game to play with no crashes or errors. Yes it has some teething issues of course and those are annoying flashing lights when night time comes, the lights seem to flicker a bit. Also, if you send feedback it will not lock the mouse and keyboard to the feedback page, so if you go to edit you will be spinning your world and placing random buildings all over. Other than those 2 things its silky smooth really. I've not seen any slowdowns in fps at all, I know another reviewer did but not on my desktop nor my laptop. Go on and buy it if you enjoy city building or management games this ones going to keep you entertained far longer than its price tag suggests. I mean really, I expect the cops to come get me anytime now because this was a steal! Edit for an update: Well now Im at 83 hours in game and it's just as much fun as when I first started. I have still yet to reach the end because I keep restarting trying to get the manufacturing balances just right. In this game that doesn't feel like work, instead I find it fun and relaxing. Over 3500 games on Steam and this is one of a very few that keeps me coming back daily! Good work devs :)
EDIT* I stand by everything I said before. While the price has gone up, any laggy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ people may have had before seems to have been fixed for a bit now. My PC is fairly old, and while I didn't have problems before, it runs even smoother now. If you enjoy city builders/management games there is no reason not to buy this, it's $6 and easily worth that. I haven't come across any bugs and I'm not sure what that guy is saying about 6 FPS. I'm not on a super high end pc and everything runs smoothly for me. For an early access game there really aren't any major problems I have with it, just small gripes. Camera controls could be better, would love to be able to move around the map with my keyboard and rotate with the mouse. As other's have mentioned the audio is repetitive but fitting. Could use a tutorial or at least a couple of hints that pop up early on to help you start out. Although even going in blind you get the hang of everything pretty quickly. Overall I'm more than happy with this purchase, looking forward to whatever's on the way
This game is a very interesting mix of genres. You build up bases, start producing goods, make everything grow while trying to maintain your increasing population's needs to finally expand to other moons. Everything in a very relaxing setup and great atmosphere. It is very satisfying to build your cities/factories and then let them run while watching your population run around, work, transport resources and so on. Totally worth the money
I'll give this one a recommended tag, but with some caution. Although the planet colonisation feature is fun, the rocket system feels a little broken to the point where getting basic supplies going can be burdensome. Fun game, but I think there is a limited play time associated with Early Access in this case. Moons of Ardan is a planet colony sim. The player starts with very basic buildings, acquiring resources as the game progresses to eventually max out the population to reach a new level. The gameplay itself is decently smooth, even with high populations. The initial load may be a little laggy, but the game slowly gets its bearings as the game continues on. The challenge is to balance resources, however different planets have different resources. As settlements upgrade into other housing, their needs increase as well. Finding a balance between pollution and launching rockets then becomes another balancing issue. The rocket menu itself isn't bad, but it's hard to tell which routes are endless. This part bothers me most about the game as getting to the next level can be burdensome (not to be confused with the feeling like it's a difficulty level aspect). I feel there will be population fluctuations until this is sort of tended to. The graphics and visuals were well done. I know some gamers are sometimes sceptical about Unity engine games, but I do like the attention to detail. Planets are colourful, animations apply to almost every aspect of the game, and the user interface is nicely organised. The sounds and music are okay. Basic sound FX are all included and the music is at best okay. The ambience is space themed which is nice, but doesn't seem to try to pull the player in further. Overall, I will recommend this game but with caution. Do your homework, watch some videos, and see if this is something you'd like to back and play. I think the game has potential, I just feel I won't be playing it too often. Surprisingly polished for a $6 early access game. A meta emerges as you build colonies and uncover new buildings/tech/materials, which keeps it feeling fresh as you press forward.
I liked the game but have a couple gripes. The scenario feels a bit too structured as you must "build this next" to progress. Tech tree could use a bit more explanation at times, but it is very logical. Also didn't care for some of the "cute" resource titles, synthwiches anyone? But the game is pretty solid and I now have colonies on the 3 planets with a trade network set up, allowing different planets to specialize for an efficient economy. Interface on the resource window makes it easy to see if you are generating a surplus or deficit on each planet as well as color coding showing if you are optimal for each critical resource. So you aren't guessing whether you have built enough production. No issues running the game on my older computer with over 1700 population across the 3 planets. Not sure how things will go as I get further into the game but it is a solid futuristic city builder that is very playable even though labeled early access. No combat or disasters, so the game is a relaxed city builder. That could change quickly with further development or new scenarios.
Moons of Ardan is a surprisingly deep (don't let the cartoony visuals fool you) and very addictive colony-builder/logistics management/simulation game. I am surprised that Moons of Ardan isn't more well known in its space (pun not intended). Moons of Ardan is reminiscent of games like Before we Leave, the Anno series, and to a lesser extent Planetbase and Kingdoms Reborn. I tried it out because I was looking for something new and I was curious what the game had to offer (the relative lack of coverage and the positive reviews piqued my interest). I ended up playing for ~15 hours over the past 3 days and I am still in the mid game. The core gameplay loop is relatively straightforward. You build out a small town, start collecting basic resources and go on to upgrade your cities and move up the value chain. Moons of Ardan is gridless and does not have any AI competition. The core challenge is to develop your cities while maintaining strong supply chains and inter-colony trade. Trade management is critical beyond the early game. Moons of Ardan is very to pick up, but it also offers a continuous flow of new mechanics without overwhelming the player. You will have to redesign your cities/industrial areas, trade capacity (spaceports and logistics resources), colony specialization and general supply chain strategy as you develop your civilization. The game itself is mostly very intuitive, but also offers room for the player to strategize and come up with their own solutions. This is a very polished release even though it's in EA. The game mechanics are introduced in a very deliberate way; you have time to get comfortable with current stage of your civilization before new challenges are introduced. I did not encounter any bugs or crashes during my 15 hour playthrough. One area that Moons of Ardan could improve upon is the trade management dashboard. Even in the mid-game, you will likely have a relatively complex inter-colony trade network. Currently its somewhat difficult to track what's going where and identify bottlenecks in your logistics networks. The trade management dashboard UI feels a bit too simple; the icons/UI elements are overly big, there is no way to filter by resource/source/destination/delivery type. I also initially missed the trade management dashboard and was forced to edit trade routes when the trade spaceships landed in my colony and entered the liftoff queue. Moons of Ardan could also benefit from some decorative elements. Your core goal is to upgrade your cities; while you will have to consider new city designs, it would be nice if a civilization upgrade would enable more visual flair. Currently the cities feel like blocks of buildings that get taller as you progress. More graphical options (AA type, disabling the depth of field effect) would also be nice to have, but this is not critical. One unique thing about Moons of Arden is the space colony aesthetics. There is a visual representation of the Arden system with your rockets flying between your moon colonies in real time. You can zoom in/out from micro (on moon) view to the system view. You can focus the view on a trade spaceship and track its movement from one moon to another. The soundtrack is above average. There are some solid ambient techno tracks that fit well with the theme of the game. Check out Moons of Arden if you want a "easy to pickup, hard to master" colony building/logistics simulation game with a space-focused aesthetic. Have fun!
Moons of Ardan is a clever, engaging design which I enjoyed greatly. It starts easy and, as you advance, the difficulty slowly sneaks up on you. The challenges which emerge become unexpected puzzles that are quite satisfying to solve. Messing up doesn't result in an unavoidable death spiral, rather progress stalls until you can figure out how to fix things. Rewarding challenge, right to the end. The core game is already solid and worthwhile as it is while the developer intends to use Early Access to further expand and polish the design.
This game is super fun and well worth its current price in its current state. It is very well polished for an early access game and still receives major updates. Definitely try if you like city builders.
