Riddled Corpses is a very straightforward twin-stick shooter with design and music heavily influenced by the 8 bit / retro / pixelated generation. Although the game can be frustrating, if you are a fan of that era of gaming you will probably enjoy what is on offer here (moreso if you are into Halloween / creature feature creepers as well,) however if you aren't a big fan of that kind of aesthetic you will probably get bored with this game very quickly as its gameplay and presentation are pretty thin. The game itself is surprisingly grindy, and at first the game was really getting on my nerves with how many bullets the enemies take to eliminate. Your default guns / weapons are very piddly and weak against the always-encroaching throng of zombies, demon bunnies, and floating skulls, making for an initially-frustrating experience before you use the game's currency to upgrade your weapon. Even after leveling up your gun, however, the effects from the gun don't change all that much and seem to just be a slightly wider or more damaging machine gun. The gameplay itself consists of little more than what you would find in similar SHMUP games, kiting the enemies around the screen and avoiding their projectile attacks and hitboxes, while using the occassional bomb / screen-clearing pickup or a time freeze which locks enemies in place and allows you to get around them easier. These two items are essential to completing certain sections of the levels as the screen can become VERY crowded with enemies and makes navigating them an exercise in precision and frustration in equal measure. At first I was pissed off that the UI would hide where enemies are (before discovering it can be toggled off and on) such as obscuring an enemy sprite spawning behind the icon of how many kills you've done, or behind the icon for the TNT screen-clearing item. This UI / HUD can be toggled off and on by pressing select on the controller, however having to swap between the two to check your life total and/or whether you have any of the special items to use can become annoying when the UI elements could have just been scaled down to avoid this back and forth. For better or worse you have no option of exploring the levels at all, and instead are shimmied along on-rails style sequences. Occassionally the camera will lock into place and you have to defend an area from a wave of zombies or defeat a boss, but as far as player agency in choosing your own path of which areas to explore there is none, and the levels follow the same linear format each time you play them. Although I enjoy booting this game up here and there to try my luck at not dying, I would wait until this game is on sale to snag it if you're at all interested, even as a well-done homage to retro titles, its base asking price is a little high for its simplistic gameplay and grindy nature.

Very mildly amusing once you've upgraded a character (shot power starts pathetic but quickly gets to passable), but really not worth play or purchase. Most enemies are just slow, uninteresting targets, and the threat to your health is mainly just shots that pass through everything but you. You can do much better with your twin-stick time. Also, dev made substantial changes and improvements for the console version, and while I have to doubt that actually made the game good, they still abandoned the PC version. They chose not to care about Steam buyers, and Steam buyers won't miss anything by returning that favor.

Like Sky Force: Anniversary, another game that I reviewed that was a shmup, the problem with this game is that you start out weak and you have to end up upgrading with coins to have enough firepower to deal with enemies. The grind however takes hours unless you use .ini file magic to change your coin count and buy all the shop items (I had to do that because the game had zero Steam Cloud support, so when I deleted the game out of rage of the grind, I had to redo everything technically, and then I got all of the achievements legitimately). Yes, to easily beat the game, you have to use the last overpowered chick character with all of the firepower. Yes, CLEARING THE GAME WITH THE FIRST UNDERPOWERED CHARACTER THAT YOU START WITH IS LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DO BECAUSE THE BOSSES ARE BULLET SPONGES HERE TOO (I mean, look at the video for the game on the store page; the developer just shows the overpowered chick characters with a lot of firepower and doesn't show the character that you start with or the grind you would have to deal with). Also, the dev was such an ass that he only put the DX version of this game that balances things better on consoles and never upgraded this version. You will lose your sanity if you play this. There's a reason why this is $8. Save your money for something else.
At first glance, Riddled Corpses looks like a great "blast from the past" kind of game. With an obvious retro look and feel, you'll think you'll have a great time playing it and you will...until the flaws become quickly obvious, potentially souring the entire experience. The Good : -Charming graphics, sound, and gameplay perfectly emulate a retro-shooter aesthetic. -Co-op play -Several characters to choose from -Each character has a unique design to their attack The Mediocre : -Progress is saved between completion of each stage, but death will force players to restart the level -Touching a boss is a 1-hit kill, regardless of health. There is also an enemy type that is the same, but is not very fast (although very damage spongy) -Game requires a significant amount of grinding to progress, often with a die a lot -> get stronger -> beat stage -> die a lot -> etc., kind of rhythm. -Some items are useful one way, while utterly worthless in the other. The Bad : -No online multiplayer -Inability to reconfigure controls -Horrible lack of information given to the player in regards to controls, items and their usage, and character differences -Terrible lack of inconsistent item drops, especially in regards to health drops (in the form of a medkit) -Game becomes a "Bullet Hell" in later stages, with the final boss being an unbearably unfun Bullet Hell-style fight -The Final Stage must be completed in 1 try; failing requires you to repeat the entirety of Stage 5. In Conclusion : The sad truth is, this game actually DOES have an improved version of itself, but it is NOT on Steam, and judging by how old the game is, it really doesn't look like we'll ever get that version. As such, I honestly don't recommend getting this game. You're better off getting it's better version on other consoles.
