Follow my curator page for more recommendations!
(TL;DR at the bottom) About two years ago I played the first RICO and didn't care much for it (see my review of it here). The guns felt floaty, the sounds were weak, the AI was awful, and the level generation wasn't enough to keep the levels from feeling extremely repetitive. Steam reviews for both games had left me under the assumption that the first game was superior in nearly every way compared to its sequel, RICO: London, so I didn't bother picking it up.. until now. I'm happy to say the gunplay in the sequel is vastly better, gun sounds are solid, there seems to be far more weapons available, movement feels good (I like being able to John Woo dive), and while the AI is still very barebones, you can at least ambush them if you find yourself in one of the very rare room layouts that allows it. They don't always know where you're at if they lose sight of you. Unfortunately level generation is about as bad as it was in the first game. You'll feel like you're going through the exact same tiny rooms over and over with very little variety. There's some nicer room types (like the small apartment with two floors, but it counts as one single room), but they're extremely rare for seemingly no reason. To add to this issue, each full level lasts WAY too long. The game shouldn't feel monotonous within the first 30 minutes of gameplay. After each level you'll be able to open a shop and choose from a few upgrades, weapons, and refill ammo/health/revives. There's a pretty huge issue here, though: You don't earn enough to buy more than one, maybe two things from each shop. On average I was earning 6 of the currency per level, but just refilling a TINY amount of my health cost all 6 points. The economy seems to be really unbalanced and poorly thought out. So, TL;DR: would I recommend RICO: London? I'm very barely leaning toward yes, only because compared to the first game this one at least felt better to play overall. The game hasn't had an update since September 2021 so this won't happen, but it'd be nice if the devs had shortened each level's length by a few rooms and increased the currency rate. Those two things alone would've made this a vastly more enjoyable experience. As it is, I'd recommend it in a deep discount, no more than about $5. Oh, also, why the hell is a game from 2021 not recognizing side mouse buttons when rebinding keys? C'mon.
I first discovered the original RICO on the Nintendo Switch and had a blast playing it, which led me to purchase RICO 2. While there are some improvements here and there, the overall quality is a massive step down from the first game. The content is much thinner, and the optimization is terrible. To make matters worse, there isn't even a tutorial. It’s a huge disappointment. Aside from the improved graphics and animations, everything else feels like a downgraded version of the original. I do not recommend this game.
I tapped out after going through two levels, because the very first room I barged into didn't offer anything different from the last one I went through, except for having some guy who took 6 bullets to the face instead of 1. The graphics do look nice, and the gunplay itself felt fine, but the best thing I can say about the rest is that it gave me the motivation to start assembling a bench I had sitting in a closet for the past month or so. I'm pretty sure I paid under $3 for this, so I'm not as bothered as I would be if I had spent $35 (?!) to get bored.
PLEASE DONT BUY THIS GAME, like many of you i enjoyed RICO, but this trash, the glitches the invisible enemies its trash.
There's really not much to this game at all. I was sorely disappointed. To begin with, if you're playing with a controller, there is no way to check the button mapping. This means you're left flailing around trying to see what does what and how it works with the gameplay. There are some dynamic movements you can do like diving and jumping, but they're clunky and awkward. Without being able to see the controller bindings in the options menu this game could have used a simple tutorial to show you the ropes. The game is horrendously repetitive. You're supposed to be battling your way up the inside of a high rise office building. Every act has all of 4 different rooms which are repeated ad nauseam until you clear that act. Every subsequent act repeats this pattern with different themes for the rooms. The first act when the characters force their way into the lowest level of the tower it's parking garage, utility, and storage. Next are offices. That's about as far as I made it. The game hangs its hat on a door breaching mechanic in which you force open every door and for a few seconds you're given slow motion, supposedly giving you an advantage over the enemies in each room. This isn't terribly helpful because using your iron sights doesn't improve your accuracy as much as it should. The iron sights sway left and right, making you have to compensate for both this AND recoil. After the 30th door you breach in one act it doesn't do anything more than amplify exactly how horrendously repetitive this game really is. With as monotonous as everything is the acts are way too long. Ammo is scarce and you can only carry two firearms at a time. You can pick up any guns dropped by your opponents, something they took great pride in putting in the description, as if it's a totally unique feature no one has ever done before. It looks like they went with a sort of Borderlands schtick where certain weapons have unique skins. I found a pistol with flames on it and a laser sight called Firestarter, and another with what looked like blood stains called Haunted Hill. Nearest I can tell it's just a cosmetic feature. Likewise health is even more scarce than ammo. You can “revive” yourself twice, but if you die again it's permadeath at the default difficulty or having to start the whole level over again on lower difficulty. Frankly, all permadeath does is make you have to go back to the main menu and reload your most recent save. And that's just starting the most recent level over again, so permadeath just adds the nuisance of extra steps. One of the repetitive rooms that crop up in each act is a sort of stairwell. It only goes up one floor, but it's the perfect place to stash a health kit or ammo or something, but they never do. Speaking of nuisances: how many times do I have to shoot someone in the head before they croak? I mean, seriously, did you give me a BB gun? Stuff like this isn't “challenging” it's annoying and it's cheap. At the end of each act you can upgrade your character. If the first level is any indication the payout at the end of each level is negligible and barely earns you enough for a single upgrade. You can increase your ammo capacity even though the problem isn't how much I can carry it's how little I can find. You can do things like reduce recoil or increase your heatlh. And, yes, “upgrades” includes simply healing yourself before you continue. All in all I cannot recommend this title at all. It certainly doesn't do anything that countless other shooters have done before, and it doesn't even do a good job utilizing established genre tropes.
Co-op still works, If you want a "Bri-ish" type of CSGO to play, with door kicking, this is the game for you. I do recommend if you it's on SALE, for like 10 - 50 pesos (which idk how much ins USD) if you want a small game to play, if you hate the game, you can go ahead and refund it.
the graphics is like a cartoon ans has your own merit, but the maps is so repetitive, seems to be playing a poor counter strike. The game level is not easy. approved, but is not a GREAT FPS game
Playable, with several bugs littered throughout the game. To give an easy example, a death in Normal difficulty is supposed to delete your save, but It doesn't. The worst offender is that the guns have wild imbalances. The default pistol is more effective than a SAW machine gun...for everything. Buying guns is practically useless since the game decides what counts as a sidearm and what doesn't. You'll often run out of ammo and most weapons I'd assume are sidearms are primary weapons in this game. 5/10 Limited replay value to do low variety of options/weapons. Isn't a terrible 1-2 hour experience.
