Fear and isolation seep through the walls of an abandoned southern farmhouse. "7" marks a new beginning for survival horror with the “Isolated View” of the visceral new first-person perspective.

A great game held back by its poor combat and kinda boring, going-through-the-motions latter sections. Everything after the switch to Mia is just a bit not that good. The slower firing guns felt good but the pistols and sub guns didn't fire fast enough and felt clunky. The molds got boring to fight, I would have liked if there was a one shot headshot mod. The flashlight not being player controlled was also bad but I know there's a mod for that if I replay. Great story, interesting levels before the boat. Bringing back partial scoring again for this series because this is a high 7 / 10
one of the best re games ive ever played
100+ hours in game on Xbox One, now 52+ hours on Steam working to 100% the achievements for a second time. Yea it's a good game, probably my fav Resident Evil. Fun main campaign, only one bad DLC (21...), it's worth your time

I want to start this by saying that I don't think RE7 is necessarily a bad game. I am very inexperienced with 1st person horror games, and even regular horror games I have played are mainly other Resident Evil titles. That said, this is the worst among them in my opinion, possibly in part from being 1st person. This may be coming from my biases with not being one who plays 1st person horror, and to say it's the worst RE game among the mainline entries I have played is similar to complaining about the worst soup at Olive Garden or something. Like, there may be valid points about the flaws, but that doesn't mean it's a bad soup, just like this isn't necessarily a bad game. Maybe I'm justifying this too much but I feel its important to clarify these things before I go into detail. I'm going to start with some positives as well: The background story is quite interesting, with new bioweapons research being the core as one would probably expect from Resident Evil. I also felt surprised by a plot point exactly once, near the very end of the game. Additionally, some of the later sequences are quite interesting, and I did have fun on a few occasions through some parts of the game. Unfortunately, that is where my praise of the game ends. There is a lot to dislike here. Much of the game is designed to be frustrating to the player, even more than I would have thought, by making you move extremely slow most of the time and with lighting effects that I struggled to adjust enough to even see anything outside of the direct line-of-sight of the rare uses of a flashlight in the game. Writing, particularly with characters' actions and their dialogue, that feels silly, stupid, or insane even for the protagonists, even more than the evil residents of the building the game takes place in. Which feels particularly frustrating when considering the 1st person perspective, creating a friction to the player between what they would say or do vs what the plot needs. Frustrating level design that creates "puzzles" lacking any depth with the challenge being more from a total lack of information on what to even do while pressure is put on the player from invincible and aggressive enemies chasing them in the meantime (For example, an early "puzzle" involves the player, after being put into a brand new location and without any indication on what to do or where to go in any way, needing to find a key and use it on a specific door while an invincible and aggressive enemy tries to kill you and has a couple scripted appearances that can feel absurd when your location should be hidden). And a startlingly short runtime that makes me pity anyone who bought it for full price on its release when it was $60. Resident Evil games aren't long by any means, but I feel the need to point out that I have 14 hours of playtime. I played through the game 2 full times and got both the endings you can watch. Literally the only mainline game with less playtime in my library is RE3 because I've only played it once so far and it's also kinda notoriously short. But the saddest point to me is just how unbothered I was by anything in this game. Resident Evil hasn't really left me overly scared before, but at least I felt some kind of horror from the others. Seeing the fleshy and warped mutations of the physical forms that victims of the various bioweapons take at least stirs something in me. Here, all I felt was disappointment as it relied more on jump scares and grossing the player out with visuals of bugs, rotting and molding things, and gore-y wounds and deaths. If the other games felt like horror to me, then this feels more like a haunted house at an awkward time of day/year: you're just standing around in a condemned building while some actors jump out at you trying to startle you for a moment and rarely succeeding because it usually seems obvious when its about to happen. Maybe I just got overly cynical from the buildup of the game's flaws but I really didn't feel anything else from it. No cheesy or fun (or funny) moments like in RE6 or RE5, not even close to anything in RE4, no story or characters like in 2 or 3, heck there wasn't even good use of the more unique style/medium like in 1 with its use of fixed camera angles. Although maybe the positive in all this is that the series can only really go up from here? Maybe I'm being unfair, or maybe this is too harsh towards the game. I didn't fully hate it, after all. And there seem to be interesting story implications for future games in the series. Like, I know it ties directly into 8 so it's worth playing on that front I guess. But I don't feel its worth recommending when I couldn't get even 15 hours of gameplay out of it over 2 playthroughs, and disliked most of those 14.3 hours I have on record. Even if I enjoyed those hours it would be difficult to recommend.
Ignore this, just testing the review system
