TL:DR
As fall out boy once said. "One night and one more time Thanks for the memories even though they weren't so great" Seriously though you are revisiting an abandoned orphanage trying to reclaim the memories there that you have lost. It's a point and click style game, released in chapters, the puzzles aren't too difficult. Each puzzle you solve brings back a piece of the memories.
Story
You're playing as a girl whose body is shared by two different personalities, each girl controls a different part of your main character. As it seems you are not in the orphanage any longer, your arrive via taxi to get the answers you are looking for. As you explore the orphanage, you begin to unravel memories and the dark twisted way it was when you have experienced it before. Like some orphanages, the more I learned about these characters and how the people in the orphanage ran the place, they really have captured the stories I have heard from them and how they treat kids.
Gameplay/Length
If you didn't already know, this game is being released in Multiple different chapters. so Not following a guide like I usually do I went along and played it blind. So about an hour, the puzzles were not as simple as I thought they were going to be halfway through. It's point and click, and each object you pick up can be used almost immediately with the surrounding area or your may already know where the piece you have goes, some of them are not obvious, and that's not a bad thing. I really had to click and interact with everything to really understand what piece went where and what I was missing. Plus it feels really rewarding to find something you may have walked passed 3 times because it was blended in so well.
Graphics and Art
"You know Magical, this really reminds me of-" Fran Bow, I know. However it's not as identical as they may seem. The way these graphics are created in this game did make me think of Fran, but the way it was coloured and drawn reminded me of those story books that scared you into listening to your parents, then when you became older you finally realized how messed up the are, but the art style was soft, cute with a twist of Grim. So you never thought too much about it. Shout out to the art team.
Soundtrack
The soundtrack that you will be listening to is pretty much going to be accompanied by a piano, and the occasionally eerie sounds here and there. It's not too much to go on about, but did fit well and did not over do it.
Conclusion
"Magical, should I buy this game?" I for one and excited for the next chapters to come out! EDIT: It's 2024, and I've not seen new chapters or dev updates. No longer recommend (I mean it when I say that I'll edit my reviews). This is basically a beta... it has room for improvement. I'll recommend it as a very short 30-40 minute chapter that doesn't feel finished. The mechanics could use some tweaks/improvements, and the game feels like it could use some basic polish as well. I paid like $1.99 for this game on sale. It was worth that. First, I love this TYPE of game and have since the 90's. For those comparing the game to Fran Bow, I'd say that's generous at this point. It could be if the story wasn't subpar. The horror elements are extremely light and not particularly creepy to me. The general atmosphere is good though. I'll second what others have said about the art style and sound design. It's lovely. The game is pretty easy all around. So the fun, for me, should come from the story combined with creepy art and sound. Sadly, the story and dialogue aren't great. First, I know more about Thomas than Jessica/Julie. That's sad. This is what I know about them: 1. Jessica maybe used to have a sister named Julie (unclear but an obvious guess)... who is now a split personality or something of that nature. 2. She/they have been in the orphanage since infant/toddler age. 3. Whatever happened, it was long enough ago that she isn't "supposed" to remember. That's literally all I've got. I'm guessing this is an ESL author? Missing words, wrong words, and "not quite what that means" word choices are all present. There are also actual typos (e.g. "As I far as I know"). I wish as much care was taken with the words as the art. Most of the time, the meaning was still clear. But there were plenty of times when the meaning was murky because of the wording. That made the "story" fall flat for me. While the graphics and sound are subtle and haunting, the dialogue is clunky and lacks that subtlety. I'd try to find a proof reader/writer to give it some polish. If it was as refined as the rest, I'd have fallen in love with this little game. Misc other notes for the devs: There were some long load times between scenes. After the board game scene, there was a fatal error and crash just as the screen with the giant stuffed animal loaded. I'm a big fan of the 'Right-Click Close All' dialogue mechanic. If you accidentally trigger a dialogue tree you've already read, Right-Click kills the whole thread so you don't have to click through them all again. It makes it faster and smoother when you're exploring a scene where several areas all trigger the same conversation (like, say, each table of kids in the cafeteria triggering the same dialogue). Clicking the dialogue box should move the dialogue forward. Currently, you have to click anywhere outside the box OR click the actual forward arrow inside the box. I swear... I clicked the box at least half the time. I could get used to it, but it seems easy to implement. The drag-drop feature is a little jerky with items getting stuck on nothing. I guess in summary: If the story was even half as good as the art and sound design, this would be a winner. It wasn't enough to guarantee that I'll come back for another chapter. I'm somewhat intrigued... but more by the story that I've created in my head than what you gave me. For the time being, I'll recommend it. If no changes or future installments happen for years, I'll change it.
Really good game. Gives me big Fran Bow, Little Misfortune vibes. Like a storybook but make it a nightmare. I do wish that there were more intuitive walk mechanics. You have to click to move which is easy enough to adapt to, but I was surprised that there weren't multiple options for walk mechanics. (It would be cool to have an option of arrow keys/WASD keys for walking. But other than that, I really enjoyed it! Looking forward to the coming chapters!
Коротенькая но прикольная игра, чем-то напоминает Sally Face. Советую пройти!
I LOVED this first chapter. Very gorey for a point and click and I'm dying for a full game so I'm absolutely gutted that their kickstarter seems to have been abadoned. This first chapter is about 40 minutes long, and pulls you right into the story with no messing around. Puzzles are easy enough once you know how to do them, but its the graphics and story that get you. I don't think I've ever felt so, uneasy, with a point and click before. Really hoping they release a full game at some point.
