I really tried to like this game and have tried to get into it multiple times and have gone through the first episode to completeion, but honestly this game is just a doom reskin but with much worse weapons and level design that just makes the game irritating to play. Most of the weapons in this game have exceptionally slow projectile speeds making them horribly inaccurate to the point I found myself just punching my way through everything because of how much faster it was just killing things with my fists. The game also makes its starting weapon the bow obsolete almost immediately by giving you a gun that uses the same ammo and does the same exact damage but fires faster, which begs the question of why the bow even exists. Ammo is also very scarce but the game does do a good thing where some enemies drop ammo on death, but it disappears very fast, which gives you another reason to just not use the subpar weapons other than your fists in this game. They also give you an axe, but I didn't see a reason to use it as it didn't seem any better than your fists which have a faster attack speed and similar if not more damage than the axe. Level design in this also feels subpar; this game stays to the fixed horizontal camera that old doom games did, meaning you can't look up or down, but this game's level design has a lot of areas where you'll be high above something meaning you can't see the enemies beneath you shooting at you, or have any idea of what you're jumping into, meaning you'll often have to blindly fire down into a pit and hope you hit whatever is damaging you. There are also a lot of sections where the level design is very cramped which makes maneuvering difficult, coupled with a lot of sections where enemies will spawn directly behind you or come out of walls that just feel like gotcha moments that punish you for not knowing before hand they spawn there. I think the worst level so far was in episode two where the floors are made out of acid and lava, which has a limited amount of boots of protection that if you get lost in this labyrinthine level you'll run out of and have to restart the entire level if you don't already know where to go, which again, just feels like a gotcha that requires a reload and before hand knowledge to avoid. I can appreciate the effort that went into this game but with so many boomer shooters out there already this one just feels extremely clunky and some how worse than the original doom games. If you really enjoy boomer shooters and doom likes I suppose this one is a worth a try but there much better games in the genre that don't feel this clunky.
What else can i say? It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing. Hit or miss maps here and there but the good far out weighs the negative and it's challenging as hell too with no savescumming. Some maps are legit Heretic tier in design.
Take this thumbs up with a BIG asterisk next to it, because Rekkr is a Doom mod that varies in quality. It's full of interesting ideas, but not a lot of them translate well into the game. It's made up out of 4 episodes with VR Rekkr as a bonus episode if you're looking for more of that gameplay. The first episode starts of well with a great bit of environmental storytelling, but quickly goes downhill. The level design varies from uninteresting to bad, and know that each level of Rekkr is LONG and full of enemies with 100 being the average amount. It's generally a slog to go through and sets the tone of questionable design choices such as multitudes of fast moving resurrection enemies and projectile weaponry that has a hard time aiming in a Doom engine. The second episode however, is actually good! The level design gets much better and has a great environment design: a burning city destroyed by monsters who travel by Viking longboat. The levels are lengthier, but exploration is worth it! The third episode is kind of mediocre, but not wholly bad. A reliance on teleports to create a weird and surreal world is an interesting idea, but in my opinion it's overused and makes the levels drag on and on with little variety. That being said they aren't as bad as the first episode as there's more going on in the third episode that's genuinely interesting. The fourth episode, Sunken Land, is genuinely fantastic! I had so much fun in this quirky yet challenging episode with imaginative, inventive and clever level design! There's so much to enjoy in the fourth episode and the levels are super interesting with their own environmental stories to tell. I had such a great time with the fourth episode and that is why I'm giving this game a thumbs up, not a thumbs down. I only wish the whole game was like the fourth episode, but sadly, it is not and the fantastic ending of Sunken Land is reliant on the base game being played, or at least the first episode. Starts off less than enjoyable, but definitely gets better at the end with a damn good climax!
I initially pirated Rekkr. Later, after having just finished it, I bought it to support the extraordinarily talented author. Because it is amazing. (my actual total playtime is around 25 hours) And the soundtrack, oh Wotan, the soundtrack! The blare of bagpipes awakens my inner berserkir. It makes me want to rip off my clothes and start running around wildly, waving a two-handed battle axe, schlong flailing humorously. Lost for words. An absolute treat.
REKKR: Sunken Land shows that it is possible to make 2.5D engine maps almost open world without walls all around. Beautiful sea and blue sky to horizon with moving clouds, all without wall box. Check those maps! The game is like Hexen with linear progression. It is not "return to central hub" system like in Hexen and Hand of Necromancy. Which is good and easy to navigate. I had to play Hexen with cheats to load the maps, one after another to avoid the central hub puzzles. Get the blue key! Get the red key! Get the yellow key! That key mentality annoys me a lot. Could not the developers just make the open world game like Skyrim. You just go around and fight monsters. Get from point A to point B, do the map quest, progress to the next map. Weapons are good. However the powerful melee weapons are missing. You get the gauntlets and then the axe. But they are doing damage to slow. If you run out of ammo for your ranged weapons you are dead. Ranged weapons are good: you get bow, primitive shotgun, fast wand, explosives wand, fast multiple projectiles wand. Shotgun and bow are realistic and cool. Enemy selection is enjoyable. Melee types are charging you, ranged ones throw the slow moving fireballs you have to dodge (as they do lots of damage). Then floating brains come that throw homing fireballs. Then floating eyes that restore dead enemies to life. Like arch vile in Doom but have very low hit points. And then walking tree stumps that launch green skulls at you. I finished episode 1 but it did not have end level boss. Just a large crowd of monsters at the end. Surprisingly good game! I played another cool game, Cult of Despair (a mod for Hexen, download https://www.moddb.com/mods/wrath-of-cronos-hard-unofficial-version https://www.moddb.com/games/hexen/addons/cult-of-despair Create run.bat file to run the game [gzdoom -file woc_v3.2.8.pk3 CultofDespair.pk3 brightmaps.pk3 light.pk3 -iwad Hexen]. Decent doom tc. Although gunplay is never as good as in Doom and some levels are just too long and too complex. Also the endboss of episode 5 is just bullsh*t. Game length is quite high with 5 episodes each containing 8 levels (9 with 1 secret level each). Tbh it also took me probably 1 or 2 episodes till I could mostly enjoy it. At first it felt a bit boring.
Doom the dark ages if it was good
Maybe one of the best mods for Doom out there. While there is a free version that you can find online, this one has an exclusive chapter that its really worth the try, and im not even mentioning the incredibly level of detail from beginning to end that the maps showcase through out the campaigns.
An amazing game with awesome retro graphics, I loved to play all of the episodes (I played for about 15 hours total but i was mostly offline so steam show only 3hours of actual playtime..) except the one named "BONUS". I hated this one, first map was bugged out for me maybe i downloaded the wrong wad i don't know... i could not reach the red key and i never found a way to finish the last map without cheats. But all 4 main episodes are GOLD.
