Red Faction II — ★☆☆☆☆
RF II turned out to be one of those games that are better preserved in memories than in reality. Having replayed it in 2026, I was genuinely surprised at how differently it feels after all these years. Perhaps it’s due to moral and technical obsolescence, but today the game looks extremely mediocre even by the standards of its time. 🔹One of the key features of RF II is environmental destructibility, yet this element is used so rarely that it quickly stops feeling like an important part of the gameplay. Throughout the entire playthrough, I only encountered a few situations where destroying objects actually mattered. 🔹The story also failed to hold my attention. The plot develops predictably, the characters try to seem interesting and well-developed, but in reality come across as fairly shallow and fail to evoke much interest. As a result, what happens on screen quickly starts to feel like a series of monotonous shootouts with little noticeable progression. 🔸That said, there is a positive aspect: the game is fairly short. The campaign doesn’t have time to become too tiresome, and the final boss at least tries to offer the player some challenge compared to the rest of the game. After replaying it, I find it hard to recommend RF II to anyone who doesn’t feel nostalgic about it. Today, the game might only be of interest to those who want to get acquainted with old shooters from the early 2000s. Personally, it remains a rather mediocre attempt to replicate the popular ideas of its time, offering nothing truly memorable except for partial environmental destructibility.
I would have never expected to give this game a thumbs up. I disliked the precessor and this game is supposed to be way worse and has "mixed" reviews. But i enjoyed it. This short game entertained me and feels exactly like fps story shooters from that time. Destructible environments actually matter in this game. I don't understand people ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about the final boss. He isn't unfair or hard. He is a bit boring tho. Just walk in circles and abuse the wall in the room. but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is this game weird to get running. I genuinely almost gave up trying to get this game running which is a decision i have never done before. Starting the game just gave me a blackscreen and every post in the steam forum told me to download a patcher for the exe. But this patcher just made my game crash on launch when i started the new exe. The only thing that helped me was using the d3d8to9 Wrapper from PCGamingWiki. But its only supposed to fix "script timing errors in cutscenes" so i figured out by pure luck that this also fixes the black screen on launch. Be cautious when buying this game because there might be a chance you genuinely can't get it running.
mouse does not work
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
old game brings back the nostalgia
Good game, but lag from time to time and it is annoying
This is one the bad red faction games. If you want to put on a podcast and just run through it, it's fine, but it's not engaging enough to ever stand out in the pantheon of shooter history. That was the reception on release and that's the perception now - they made up for it with Guerilla of course. Go play that.
Game entirely misses the mark of what made the original great. Storyline is forgettable, honestly offensively cheesy and lame at times. Almost no destruction or geo-mod to speak of besides clearly marked set pieces. Guns are neat, but clunky. Enemies are dumb as hell and have trouble navigating their environment. Enemies infinitely respawn in several sections. Almost zero references or callbacks to the original besides magical "nano technology". Guerilla has issues, but is the proper sequel to Red Faction 1.
works like crap on a modern pc gets stuck in full screen on the incorrect monitor and keeps coming up black and white bars over the screen and cant change aspect ratio ect
