I am happy to see Code Mystics revamping 1990's arcade goodness. I used to play RBFF2 often in the arcades back in the day as a teen. Sadly, this title did not age well when compared to other 1990's SNK releases such as KOF series, Samurai Spirits Series, and SNK/Capcom individual releases of the SNK VS. CAP series. After a 25+ year gap since I've last played RBFF2, I simply do not recommend because of the out of date rough game physics. In my opinion, RBFF2's game physics is not enjoyable in 2025 when compared to back in 1990s. I will cherish my 1990's memories of playing RBFF2 in the arcades at this point.
REAL BOUT FATAL FURY 2: THE NEWCOMERS arrives on Steam through the efforts of Code Mystics and publisher SNK CORPORATION as a faithful revival of one of SNK’s late-era Neo Geo fighting classics. Originally released in arcades in 1998, this title represents the culmination of the Real Bout sub-series within the long-running Fatal Fury franchise. Rather than reinventing the formula, it refines and polishes the mechanics established by its predecessors, delivering a fast, technically demanding 2D fighter that emphasizes spacing, timing, and character mastery over spectacle. From the moment the character select screen appears, the game exudes late-90s arcade energy. The roster is one of its strongest features, boasting over twenty playable fighters that include franchise icons such as Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui, and Andy Bogard alongside returning bosses and new challengers. Each character possesses a clearly defined fighting style, complete with signature special moves, command normals, and super techniques. Unlike modern fighters that often streamline inputs for accessibility, Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 expects precision. Special move execution demands deliberate timing, and mastering a character requires understanding both their offensive strengths and defensive vulnerabilities. Combat flows at a brisk pace, with matches often decided by sharp reads and quick punishes. The refined “oversway” system replaces the earlier multi-plane arena mechanic with a more streamlined sidestep that allows temporary movement into the background to evade attacks. This subtle defensive layer adds strategic depth without overwhelming newcomers with complexity. Positioning becomes crucial, as corner pressure and spacing control can quickly shift the momentum of a round. Throws, feints, and guard breaks encourage aggressive mind games, rewarding players who can anticipate their opponent’s habits. Visually, the game stands as a testament to SNK’s sprite artistry during the Neo Geo era. Character animations are fluid and expressive, with dynamic poses and dramatic hit effects that enhance the impact of every exchange. Background stages are colorful and detailed, capturing a global tournament atmosphere that feels lively despite the two-dimensional presentation. While the pixel art reflects its age, it retains a crisp charm that many fans of classic fighters continue to appreciate. The soundtrack complements the action with energetic compositions that heighten the intensity of each bout. The Steam release benefits from Code Mystics’ technical enhancements, most notably the inclusion of rollback netcode for online play. This addition is significant, as it allows modern players to experience competitive matches with minimal input delay, preserving the tight responsiveness that defines the game’s design. In addition to online versus modes, players can access local multiplayer, training options, and supplementary content such as artwork galleries. Though the package does not include extensive story campaigns or cinematic modes, its focus remains squarely on competitive integrity and arcade authenticity. In terms of balance, Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 reflects the design sensibilities of its era. Certain characters may feel stronger in specific matchups, and tier discussions remain a lively topic among competitive players. However, the game’s depth ensures that skill and knowledge often outweigh raw character advantages. Learning frame data, understanding safe jump timings, and mastering defensive options can significantly elevate performance. The challenge curve may appear steep to newcomers unfamiliar with classic SNK fighters, but dedicated practice reveals a rewarding system beneath the surface. Ultimately, REAL BOUT FATAL FURY 2: THE NEWCOMERS endures because of its mechanical clarity and unapologetic arcade roots. It does not attempt to modernize its core formula beyond technical improvements; instead, it preserves the intensity and technical demands that defined 90s fighting games. For longtime fans of SNK’s legacy or players seeking a historically significant fighter with robust competitive potential, this Steam release offers a polished gateway into one of the genre’s most refined retro experiences. Its emphasis on skillful execution, tactical movement, and expressive sprite-based combat ensures that even decades after its original debut, it remains a compelling arena for head-to-head competition. Por desgracia me gusta mucho este juego pero no pudieron hacer a Alfred jugable en Online,y era la UNICA razon de comprar este juego, una lastima
RB2 is peak SNK - tight, stylish, and endlessly fun. This is easily one of the best fighters SNK ever produced, and absolutely top-tier within the Fatal Fury series. The roster is stacked with just about every character you’d want from this era, making it feel like a true celebration of the franchise. Gameplay is smooth and responsive, with fluid animations and fast-paced fights that never get old. Every match feels dynamic, and learning each character’s style is genuinely rewarding. On top of that, working through each fighter’s story adds extra motivation to keep playing. It’s a polished, content-rich fighter that still holds up as one of SNK’s finest.
It's genuinely one of the worst fighting games ever made on this planet by anyone, but this time it's special because it comes with an enormous price tag. After my lovely refund I'm done pretending that the Real Bout games are even remotely playable. Two days ago I did an arcade run of KOF 99 - how about a twenty euro re-re-re-release of that so I can once again be fooled and scammed because of my loyalty to SNK?
