Enjoyable, yet not very challenging platformer where you feel that there should've been a few more stages. After the intro, you're thrust directly into the game. Because there is no tutorial, you will have to learn all of the possible moves on your own. Fortunately, it is not complicated. Aside from your standard attack, which fires bullets from your wand, each of your four buddies has an attack that is helpful in certain circumstances. While you must toggle between them and cannot simply press a button to select the one you want, everything moves quickly and you are not needed to juggle between them when things become tricky. Simply put, every companion shoots in a different direction. The ability of the water drop is identical to your usual attack; the difference is that it travels further and can freeze enemies. Then there's the red devil, who can destroy enemies above you, and the green blob, who can spew exploding slimes at enemies below you. Only the fourth, the flying bat with a single eye, is incapable of attacking. When I think about it, It's the one I used the most because it reveals hidden things. What I appreciated right away is that you don't have to smash the attack button. Simply keep it pushed, and the selected companion will continue to attack. Platforming, evading dangers and removing enemies is what the game is all about. Although you can easily dash through the linear stages to the exit, each stage has four challenges that demand little effort if you go slowly and poke your nose everywhere. This is also a prerequisite for true endings. You don't have to do anything extraordinary to complete the challenges; simply find all coins, eliminate all enemies, demolish hidden evil blocks exposed by the bat creature, and discover all secrets. Secrets aren't difficult to find, even when they're tucked behind fake walls. They are easily identified by semi-transparent pixels. And you won't miss anything because stages can be replayed and even play in whatever order you like. Each stage is unique and has a specific theme. Unfortunately, you might get bored with only a handful of enemies that show up. Stages, while adding an element or two, do not include any mechanics that significantly alter the gameplay. In fact, only a few things are clearly evident throughout the game. The most prevalent are two types of blocks: blue, which can only be demolished with your basic attack, and colored, which can be destroyed by any of your three buddies. Then there are floating orbs with temporary unique abilities that aren't particularly useful. You may get some speed or wings that allow you to double jump, but you can complete a stage without them. They disappear after use, so if you need it to reach a secret, you'll have to restart or die. When it comes to death, it is not painful. Stages aren't difficult to begin with; there's a halfway point checkpoint and you keep everything you collected. Finally, you can improve your wand or acquire a power that allows you to unite two partners into one. Those flying orbs contain a wand improvement. The bad news is that if you get hit, you lose it. Companion fusion, on the other hand, is found through the destruction of colored gems. The ability is only temporary, but you can use it at any time to destroy everything in your path. It's best saved for bosses who can be obliterated with a few hits. If you're an experienced gamer looking for a challenge, I recommend selecting the hardest difficulty level. Even on regular difficulty, the game is simple, making it excellent for those who are new to the genre.
"Ravva and the Phantom Library" is the sequel to "Ravva and the Cyclops Curse". In comparison to the previous game, the sequel feels way more evolved, with a solid structure that points the (both artistic and game design) way the devs wanna go more clearly. For me, the best decision here was to add a good amount of replayability to the game, giving you the option to replay the stages (which are more unique now) to find secrets, gather achievements, collectibles in general, or memorize the patterns and timings for speedrunning, if that's your thing. And the soundtrack is on point! Also, even though not broken in parts anymore (1-1, 1-2, etc..), the stages feel more deep, which makes the replay process naturally more pleasant, in my opinion. Phantom Library overall is not so difficult, even though speedrun-friendly, it maintains the chill "play at your pace" mood. Got my thumbs up. :)
While there may not be a ton of meat on the bones. The meat that is here is good, and so are the bones.
Ravva 2 is an enjoyable little action platformer that overall plays well on PC that delivers on a lot of the Nintendo Entertainment System nostalgia while at the same time leaving you wanting a bit more. The story is fairly simple, similar to the previous game and sets up the basic premise for the game with an intro and ending sequence, but nothing story-wise in between the levels. The gameplay is fairly simple but is used creatively well. Essentially, move the character through the level, fight the boss at the end. Use your abilities to navigate through the level while trying to uncover secrets. Swap abilities abilities around quickly as you go and pick up unique powerups throughout the level. Its a simple concept but it is utilized well. The game has several themed stages each ending with a boss fight. Many of the bosses are similar in concept, but have unique attack patterns which are telegraphed fairly well. The game is short and sweet, not lasting too long, but with the price it is currently at, it fits well with the cost. The level design is charming and mostly straightforward. Move from point A to point B. The design is varied somewhat between each level with secrets and relatively simple challenges to overcome. Boss fights are fairly straightforward with each boss having a unique pattern, but still relatively easy to figure out. The sound design, like most of the game, is fairly simple but matches the theme of each level to an extent. Its enjoyable to listen through and didn't overstay its welcome. Graphically the game follows the classic pixelated art style reminiscent of older games with a vibrant color pallet. Like all other elements of the game, there is an overall improvement in quality over the first game. Pixel sprites are often diverse to show off the theme of the level. Characters are easilly distinguishable with the bosses and main character taking the center stage for art and pixel design. Overall, the game is short simple and sweet. It is an enjoyable time that harkens back to an older age of gaming. for the price tag I would say its well worth the purchase. The game does make you want more however and it is clear to see where more mechanics and variety could easily push the concept further. The ideas implemented in this game, while simple, are fairly unique at times and its clear to see that more can be done with them given time/money/etc. I am curious to see where the next installment goes, but for now, Ravva 2 is an excellent game well worth a casual play.
Nice, (for me a bit) challenging and enjoyable. I can recommend playing this game and will definitely buy the next part ^^
This game whips ass. Love it. Cute art style, great pixel art aesthetic. You get to be an owl (which is SICK). So many spells to choose from. This game is better than kratom.
It's everything a sequel should be. Great controls, bigger and better visuals, new bosses, and mechanics. If you liked the first one, you'll love the second one just as much, if not more. Just...go play it. It really is everything a sequel should be
A cute and fun little retro side-scroller! Cute art style and animations. Nice platforming, fun arsenal of summons to use, and a good variety of level design and themed mechanics.
