My playtime: 24:01:06 (based on in-game clock, 100% achievement, last save before the final area) Grindy Achievement(s): No. Optional Achievement(s): Yes (~19 achievements). Difficult Achievement(s): No.
Intro
Rave Heart is a turn-based RPG Maker game that offers up to 6 playable party members and a lot of side quests. Pros: - A lot of side quests that lead to boss fights - Charming side stories for some characters - Quest direction is denoted by arrow marks Cons: - No quest log - Quest direction sometimes doesn't show up
Should you buy this game?
Yes. If you like story-heavy RPG Maker games with a lot of side contents, you'll like this game. The game might be quite expensive though, so feel free to buy it at a sale. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In-Depth Review

Graphics
The game mostly uses customized assets with some default ones mixed in. I recognized some assets from this pack although I couldn't seem to recall the rest. The maps are also well done except for some occasions where an NPC blocks the way to the exit. Dungeons tend to be short with either a straight forward path or a huge, one screen map with a lot of branching paths that lead to the same place. To be honest, I wasn't fond of the latter one since it feels more of a maze rather than an actual dungeon. The towns, on the other hand, looks beautiful and unique from each other.
Story
The game sets in a sci-fi setting, where traveling between planets is as easy as driving to another city. The worldbuilding somehow reminds me of Septerra Core (my review), introducing different sectors where each sector has different cultures and appearances. This information might be a lot to take in at first, but the game never forces you to understand them in one go. All of the detailed information is available in some machines that are spread throughout the beginning areas - it was easy to revisit this information whenever I needed to. Cutscenes are abundant throughout the game - you'll mostly spend your time watching the cutscenes rather than clearing the dungeons. Despite the static portraits, characters are portrayed well with their unique way of talking. The conversation between characters always gives a smile to my face, especially the side stories that are unlocked at the latter half of the game. Although the ending is wrapped up nicely, some unanswered questions and the mysterious part in the ending can serve as material for the sequel.
The Game
Gameplay Tutorials are provided at the beginning of the game and the game does a clever job in combining the tutorial with the main story. The game also very helpful to its players by providing arrows to denote important objects such as interactable objects, chests, and even quest directions. However, the quest directions are not available at some point, especially near the end of the game. It might be happening because the destination is located on a different planet, but this limitation might leave you confused as to where to go next. Party Members You'll have up to 6 party members in your party, each with different roles. It might take some time to understand their roles, especially the ones that have several unique skills in their arsenal. Finding what each character is best at and the proper strategy to defeat enemies in battle are what make the game fun, although the lack of MP regen skills might hinder you from trying too much. Combat The game has a unique weakness and resistance system which can be seen by how the enemies look like. Robot-like enemies are categorized into Tech types, which are weak to Physical types that are made of flesh. In response, Physical types are weak to Ether types, which are made of spiritual beings. The Ether types are weak to the Tech types, turning it into a full circle of weakness and resistance. It wasn't hard to remember this mechanic and surprisingly, it's easier to find enemy's element this way compared to the usual fire - water - grass mechanic. Normal encounters will mostly provide you with one enemy of each type. They aren't hard to beat although you must be careful with their damage - they still can kill your party members if you aren't careful. Items are also quite costly at the beginning of the game and the lack of MP regen skills makes it hard to spam your attacking skills. Luckily, you'll get fully healed after each level up and your party members can level up quickly. Bosses tend to spawn with normal enemies. This makes all strategies to be similar with a slight difference based on what the boss does. Strangely, I found a boss in the early game to be one of the most difficult bosses in the game since there wasn't any way to heal my party except by using items. The game tends to be not very clear that you're going to fight a boss though - it will give some sort of precaution by placing a healing orb before the boss room at first, but the said orb seems to be nowhere to be found as you progress the game. Side Quests If you are the type that hates story-heavy games, the game surprisingly has a lot of side quests that you can finish. The side quests expand the exploration area by a huge margin, making it seem like you're only touching a small portion of the in-game universe with the main story. Most of these are just fetch quests, although they tend to come with optional boss fights. It feels like I'm playing a different game with a different focus, especially since most side quests are unlocked at the same time. Length and Difficulty The in-game clock states that I finished the game in ~24h. A great portion of my playtime was spent on finishing side quests although there were some occasions where I had to reload my save several times to finish some boss battles in the early game. The difficulty isn't hard once you have a full party and understand their role. Problems Some texts are hard to read if they are written in italic. The cutscene when you travel to other planets also takes too long to finish.
Specs
Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Conclusion
The developer did a good job with the worldbuilding - it looks unique and doesn't feel overwhelming with the amount of information you have to take in. Although the main game put the story as its focus, somehow I enjoyed the side stories more, mainly because it focuses more on the character interactions and funny atmosphere instead of the serious and bland tone. Side quests also provide a different feeling to the game; it's as if the developer tries to find which style works the best for him. It's not a bad thing though - I enjoyed them both, and I'm sure you also will if you like RPG Maker games.
You’re always star-ring up trouble.
Rave Heart, the first game by Starmage RPG Studios, is a delightful turn-based JRPG that feels like Final Fantasy in Outer Space. And since I am a big fan of the Final Fantasy franchise I couldn't wait to dive in.
Storyline:
Klein, a trained Cipher and Princess Ellemine's bodyguard, navigates the intricate and volatile Xerxes Galaxy to soothe Erran-Draconian tensions in the game. They meet a silent dragon guy, a lovely fleeing bride extraterrestrial, a gunslinging catgirl, and a human prince. Protecting Princess Ellemine and the House of Rave is at the heart of this intricate tale. The Learnatoriums provide detailed but dense knowledge, and the game's lore is extensive, but occasionally overpowering. With their own personalities and eccentricities, the well-developed characters are lovable and memorable. The humorous banter and contemporary references give the story a certain charm.
Gameplay:
It's easy to learn how to play because the game's lessons are built into the story at the beginning. Arrows help you find things like chests and quest lines that are important. Later in the game, though, these arrows go away, especially when you go to different worlds. This can make it hard to tell where to go next. The turn-based fighting is fair and fun, and the different party members change as the story goes on to keep things interesting. Using EP and SP points for different powers adds to the strategic depth of the game. Real-time events and the unique Astral State ability add exciting and exploratory features outside of battle. The game tells you to save often, which is important for fighting the tough fights. Space travel is widespread in the game's futuristic environment. Each industry has its own culture and aesthetic. Initial mythology is overwhelming, but the game teaches it gradually through informational machines in early stages, allowing you to learn at your own pace. Your party can have six individuals with varied powers. Finding out what each character does best and how to use their skills may take time. This makes it entertaining, but without MP recovery abilities, trying new techniques might be difficult. Cutscenes advance the story and typically take precedence over dungeon exploration. Characters come alive through language and interactions despite static pictures. The later-game side stories and conversations are entertaining. For those who prefer less story, the game has many side quests. These quests substantially expand your exploration, making the game world feel bigger than the tale. While most side quests entail retrieving goods, many have optional boss fights. Many of these quests appear at once, making it feel like a new game. Despite its intriguing gameplay and expansive universe, Rave Heart has some problems that might distract from the overall experience. One noticeable disadvantage is the inconsistency in quest navigation. The removal of helpful signs might cause players to feel lost, especially when dealing with multi-planet travels. Furthermore, a lack of MP regeneration abilities might hinder originality in fighting methods, making protracted combat sessions more stressful than enjoyable. While the game contains a wealth of material, these flaws can occasionally disturb immersion and enjoyment.
Graphics & Sound:
Game contains lovely pixel visuals and detailed character pictures. Play in windowed or fullscreen; however, fullscreen is awkward. The game has different visuals with classic RPG styles and area-specific designs. The nostalgic soundtrack is fun and matches the game's environments; however, certain songs are tiresome. Adjusting music, ambient sounds, and effects is fantastic for streamers and multitaskers.
Final Verdict:
Rave Heart stands out as an interesting trip through a beautifully drawn sci-fi world. There's never a dull moment because it has strategic turn-based fighting, a lot of room to explore, and fun side quests. With its deep character development and immersive world-building, the game hits a good balance between old and new. Even though there are some small problems with tracking and managing resources, it's a very interesting experience. I stumbled on this game while looking at the new releases. I had never heard of it and was surprised that after about a week of being out it had no reviews. So for the price of a over priced coffee I decided to give it a shot. Its a really charming game. I grew up playing these pixel RPG's like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger. The music is actually pretty good. I am about 3 hours into it with a restart after I learned a few things about game play. I made it to the first "BOSS" fight and so far the story is interesting. It has a star ocean feel to it for sure. If you want to see the first 90 min or so of the game you can check out my Twitch channel. https://www.twitch.tv/hollownostalgia I realized after that my game was way to loud and my mic was too quiet. I just put it together quickly because I couldn't really find any game play. I'll keep streaming (hopefully with better audio mix) as I progress in the game so if you want to experience the story with me drop a follow and join in next time I play.
Too long, don't want to read? Play this game! Rave Heart is a very enjoyable game. I was surprised by the political nature and mature themes presented in the game which made it stand out from other RPG's I've played. The characters acted with intelligence and had very good individual personalities. A lot of surprising moments throughout the story left me guessing which characters were going to make it through the end. Speaking of the ending, it was very satisfying and felt like a great conclusion to the story. The combat system was simple but satisfying by using a rock, paper, scissors typing match up. The skills are cool and have great animations and the fights have a very solid balance to them. I enjoyed the combat and even the random battles weren't a drag because the encounter rate was balanced well and the fights weren't too easy or too challenging. The music, sound, and world design was superb and there were some tense moments were brought upon by the atmospheric design. The game world felt large by visiting many different planets and locations and by them varying to certain degrees. There were many different states to the world and views which set the stage very well. There were some well designed, intuitive puzzles which I enjoyed. The sidequests were fun and rewarding and provided a nice challenge. There is a lot more I could say about this game but it would just be more paragraphs of me singing its praises. I highly recommend this game as it was honestly just a fun time.
¡Juegazo!
I'm about 9 hours in and this game's story just keeps getting better and better! Graphics are futuristic and I like the animated battlers style, music is great, battle system is awesome (love how the dev utilizes weaknesses) but sometimes I feel like even normal enemies hit far too hard. If I had any critiques about this game it would be that. Challenge is great, but sometimes the challenge feels too artificial in nature especially if just regular enemies are hitting not once but twice in the same turn for huge amounts of damage (and I always have the best equipment and even grind a bit when I'm around a healing spot). I do really enjoy the challenge of the bosses, there were several times I was on the very edge of my seat hoping for a miracle (luckily I haven't party wiped yet). One suggestion I have to the dev, is that while I'm pretty good at remembering which kinds of enemies are weak to Physical, Tech, and Ether, you might want to look into some kind of method that automatically allows the player to see what innate element the enemy is when selecting them. That way players are not going "was it machines that are weak to Physical?" and the like during battle (and some of us have horrible memory). It would make building our strategies a fair sight easier if we had some kind of automatic visual cue. This is a solid RPG with a fantastic story so far, and when I beat this game, you can bet I'm going to rave (no pun intended) about it on social media. It's not often I find a RPG Maker game that sucks me into the story, but this game definitely has. If I had to give it a score, it's a solid 8 out of 10 so far. I'll update this review more when I beat it.
Com um enredo interessante, personagens bacanas e bem construídos, vários side-quests e um sistema de batalha rápido, balanceado e dinâmico, Rave Heart é um jogo excelente e um dos melhores já criados no RPG Maker.
If you like epic classic old-school JRPGs (made with RPG Maker) that utilize a science fiction setting, give this game a try. It features a decent playtime and fairly challenging rock/paper/scissors-style battles. Most other reviews go into more detail, I simply wish to let the game reach the magical mark of 10 positive reviews (which gets the game more exposure due to how Steam works). So let me just tell you: As someone who mainly plays this type of game, and as someone who has played through hundreds of JRPGs, including the most bare-bones indie garbage, I can tell you that a lot of care went into this game and that I really enjoyed my playthrough.
I started playing this game a few years ago, but I never got around to finishing it. I chose to try the game again after learning that there had been a significant upgrade. To learn more about the game, you may read other reviews. I just wanted to let you know that I am really enjoying the second go around. That this game isn't more well-known surprises me.
One of the better RPG Maker games out there! I loved every minute! A great story filled with emotions, well written characters with varying personalities, and fun gameplay!
