Introduction
Waiting for one hour and a half in order to fail a game, simply to unlock a certain Steam Achievement which isn’t even registered towards the total count yet. That is the kind of dedication I wanted to highlight in regards to the title I shall be reviewing today. Quest room: Hanon proved to be a far bigger surprise than what its seemingly bite-sized content was initially enticing me with. This game was the Steam debut for BURRIK, a developer which has since then branched towards a selection of genres, including platformers and classic exploration/adventure. Hanon might be encased in a singular room, yet its story is only shadowed by the fascinating gameplay it showcases.
Story
One thing we need to clear up is the title itself. Now, “Hanon” can either refer to a small bird of prey or the French composer, Charles-Louis Hanon. We’ll go with the first definition of course, yet the French connection is still present here. Napoléon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign between 1798 and 1801 was a monumental failure from a military perspective yet the World had a tremendous gain from a cultural point of view. The birth of Modern Egyptology! Our fascination for highly advanced yet still ancient civilizations, has created a demand for adventures of a particular flavor, if you will. Hieroglyphs form a connection with Quest room’s title since Horus, one of the main deities in Ancient Egypt, is often portrayed through a falcon symbol. You may think that I’m focusing too much on a certain aspect, yet this title is all about densely packed details and quality over quantity. You’re stuck in a small room/trap throughout the entirety of the game, afterall. Pay close attention to your surroundings. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1811782386 As soon as you start the game, you’re informed that it’s the skilled work of a single person and afterwards you’re presented with a static screen filled with instructions and some very useful context. A nameless protagonist has been seeking an artifact for over two decades, until the entrance to its final place of rest, is unceremoniously discovered. The surprise quickly turns sour, as the initial room has turned into a sealed trap for our would-be archeologist. Oxygen levels are quickly dropping so there is no time to waste. Your life depends on swiftly finding an escape, with or without the artifact in tow. Considering the actual scale of the game, its short introduction serves its purpose admirably. You don’t need any more narrative exposition here. A task is given and it’s up to the players to fulfill it while a timer estimates how much they’ve got left before asphyxiation. It just goes to show that time itself can be the deadliest trap we’ll encounter.
Graphics
I had my suspicions and ModDB has confirmed that Quest room: Hanon is indeed powered by the Unity Engine. There are no complaints here since I have no technical or performance issues to report. The game scales to your native resolution and it’s not going to stress your system in any manner, so I presume that Hanon can be enjoyed even on a low-spec laptop, nevermind decent desktops from nowdays. The visual style features a small degree of chromatic aberration towards the edges of the screen. It’s an acquired taste, I know and would still prefer it any day of the week over the dreaded motion blur. When you’re not focused on solving the actual puzzles, you can freely pan and rotate the camera to admire Hanon’s hieroglyphs. Don’t ask me if they’re genuine, though at first glance they sure look convincing enough for a language that’s as dead as the civilization which made use of it. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1813311299
Audio
Speaking of language, I didn’t expect the tomb itself to strike a conversation with our hapless protagonist, yet at least the general sound effects or the soundtrack could have made their presence felt a bit more that the current selection of audio assets. Don’t get me wrong, the silence of the grave type of “variety” is suitable here, yet when you’ll spend at least an hour solving puzzles in one sitting, you want some music playing in the background. Instead, you’ll be greeted with heavy breathing if you take your sweet time about it. Running out of air is not a pleasant way to go, though that outcome can be avoided if you keep your wits about you.
Gameplay
An hour and a half to save yourself and perhaps find the very reason why you’re risking it all. This is one of those rare games which not only encourages you, but demands their completion in a single seating. The replay value of adventure games is faily low already, yet in these circumstances, Quest room: Hanon takes things to an extrereme, perhaps. Regardless, it’s time well spent if you’re looking for 3D puzzle solving with a twist. I’d compare the titile with “The Room” series, since it shares its esoteric DNA to a certain extent while also providinng similar gameplay mechanics. These involve finding objects, inspecting them closely, combining or placing them in predetermined spots which shall finally reveal another step along the puzzle solving process. Of course, you also have more classic elements of the genre and the solution can be both challenging and unexpected. I can’t go further into details without spoiling something. You know I’d never do that. Hanon is an experience you shall discover on your own terms. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1813311554
Verdict
However, I must stress out the presence of a cliffhanger type of ending which kind of bothered me, yet I can only hope that a sequel is planned and released eventually. For all that it’s worth, Quest room: Hanon is more than decently priced, you won’t feel cheated if you’re a true fan of the genre. Just be fully aware of the story and gameplay limitations which are obviously not crowd pleasers. Not all mysteries require vast journeys, same goes for endings which can be abrupt and only leave us desiring for more.
Strong Points
+ Decently priced. + Pleasant graphics. + Steam Achievements. + Complex puzzles with increasing difficulty.
Weak Points
- Unsurprisingly limited sounds. - No Steam Trading Cards yet. - Ends with a cliffhanger… - No replay value.
i was looking for a short, casual puzzle experience and was intrigued by the ancient Egyptian style. What i was met with was something that was both lackluster and buggy. trying to play through it a few times i encountered several bugs with the rotation of objects, they would get stuck and/or made some puzzles unsolvable, despite the fact that it appeared that i solved the puzzle correctly. There were a few puzzles which didn't really correlate to any clues in the enviornment, which took away from the experience. Unfortunately I cannot recoomend this game.
TL;DR: Buggy controls made this game unnecessarily frustrating to play. I bought this game because I was hoping for an experience like The Room series of games, but was let down. The controls are buggy and erratic, making puzzle pieces very difficult to manipulate -- something that seems like a necessary given in a puzzle game. More than one puzzle had parts that had to be spun didn't move until you made them overspin past the position you wanted. Puzzles should not be difficult because of jittery controls. Also, the movement of the view is very limited. You are in a fixed camera position at the center of the room and can only toggle between high view and low view, rotating the view from the center point, and zooming in and out. What this means is that several puzzles must be viewed from an obscured, slanted perspective that makes it very difficult to figure out which areas of the room have parts that can be manipulated. These things make it unnecessarily difficult to complete the puzzzles in a way not intended in this format of puzzle game. It would be like having a jigsaw puzzle game where the pieces randomly rotated every time you tried to connect them and you could only view the puzzle surface at a 35% angle. Beyond that, there were puzzles where the solution didn't seem to have a clear indication of what the solution was without guessing (the nine rotating black circles puzzle is what I'm thinking of in particular).

Puzzles range from reasonable to "wtf" in complexity. The graphics are great, but controls are sketchy, awkward and blocky: You'll be unable to move a puzzle piece, then it will fly way passed what you were trying to accomplish - rendering certain puzzles to be downright maddening. Thus, the 'match the image on the left' puzzle with the 4 tiles is simply impossible to pass. The tiles spin wildly when moved, if at all. I regret spending money on this one.
Quest Room: Hanon is a puzzle of you stuck in a room with oxygen slowly decreasing. You have 1.5 hours to figure your way out of this room or you die. This game is short, filled with puzzles, and only offers one scene, the room you're in. However, the graphics are really good, the sounds are good, and the puzzles are not super hard, but some may be difficult to ascertain where the clues are coming from. I found the hardest thing was to find out what had changed in the room when I did solve a puzzle. You can hear things moving, parts sliding, doors opening, but you have to literally see them or recognize that something has changed to make it obvious where your next clue or puzzle may be. There are some inventory puzzles, but nothing too difficult either. I enjoyed the puzzles and the game as a whole, my only negatives are that it's rather short and rather dark and limited in its use of a good graphic palette. But then again, it would make the game much easier if the colors were more varied and it being short needs be recognized that this has been made by a single person. I'm always impressed when I see quality games come from such small teams. I picked this up for less than a couple bucks, well worth it, and it offers one challenging achievement of beating the room within 10 minutes. Trust me, your first time you will die and not figure it out the first hour and a half. Definitely would recommend it for a fun brain teaser.
If you are good at puzzle games you will like this one as well. It's kinda hard and the timer makes it extra spicy. Prize fits the play time. Only thing that annoyed me as well were the clunky controls. Sometime you want to tune a gear or anything just a bit and it suddenly rotates a whole third or so.
Follow "First Person Exploration and Puzzle Games" for more games like this!
A mediocre puzzle game that takes place entirely in one room. The controls are not great and most of your time is spent clicking on everything trying to figure out what is interactable. There are lots of things that the user can clearly interact with eventually, but not yet, leading to a lot of boring wasted time click-hunting. I only got halfway through, but in that time (~30 minutes) I ran into multiple puzzles with multiple valid solutions, but the game only accepts one of them so you need to try them all. Also one of the solutions made no sense, even after looking up the answer. Given the sale price of $0.50, I guess you can't ask for much. But I think my time is worth more than this. I'd recommend checking out level 4 of The Escaper for a better version of what this game could have been.
