Pyre Review

TL;DR
I kept saying "This doesn't feel like my type of game" - but then I kept playing and enjoying it more. It’s fantasy basketball. Not the best Supergiant game, but a fun detour.
🎮 Gameplay

Combat: Pyre swaps hack-and-slash for fast-paced 3v3 “Rites” - magical sporting events where your characters attempt to dunk a celestial orb into the enemy's flame. Have you ever played a Leap Slam build in Path of Exile? Or played NBA Jam but wanted to jam Hades in there? Each character has unique stats and abilities, and matches get intense.
Replayability: High. The branching story paths and choices around who you liberate or leave behind give real weight to a second (or third) run.
Controls: I played on K&M, controller works just as well.

📜 Story & World

Premise: You are the Reader, exiled to the Downside for the crime of literacy. You guide a band of fellow exiles across the wasteland, competing in Rites for a chance to earn your freedom and return to the Commonwealth above. The idea behind the game is to live with your choices. And you can't save everyone.
Characters: The characters are so well designed that losing them hurts.
Worldbuilding: So well done. There’s a lot of reading, but it’s worth the dive if you’re into it.

🧩 Progression

100%-able?: Yeah - but then you have to play in versus mode and who wants to do that?
Leveling: Characters gain Enlightenment through battle, unlocking skills and stat boosts. The Reader also gains abilities that influence outcomes, like making enemies slower or enhancing your team's aura.
Gear & Builds: You equip talismans to modify your fighters. There’s no weapon-swapping, but the variety in party composition and skills gives a lot of room for strategy.

🖼️ Presentation

Visuals: Like every other Supergiant game, the art is amazing.
Audio: I forgot to turn on Spotify it was so good.
Performance: Should run smoothly even on low-end hardware.

🧠 Bonus Bits

Mods: None
Multiplayer: Local versus mode is included!
Steam Deck: Runs great.
I hate to not recommend a Supergiant's game, but I find Pyre quite boring. The music is fantastic as always, visually stunning, amazing character designs. Still the story is kinda boring, and the gameplay is too repetitive, I feel I'm not moving forward, every rite plays mostly the same as the previous one, with some uninteresting dialogues in between that don't move the story forward. At least I would like to know how many rites are left so I at least feel some sense of progression. Sadly I'm dropping the game.
✔ Great graphics and animations ✔ Good game mechanics ✔ Great story ✔ Great voice acting ✔ Great soundtracks ✔ Runs on GNU/Linux
I really love the story in this one, I think I actually like it more than Hades! I've found myself smiling so much during this game, something I've sorely needed lately. The characters are lovely and the gameplay is fast and engaging, I wasn't sure if I would like the Rites but they are really fun! I just finished the game for the first time and I've never felt so drawn to complete a game; the narrative is so personal and gripping that I never felt burn-out at all, which I often get before finishing a game. I'm so impressed with their ability to weave a story through all the interactions and create a game where "failure" doesn't really exist, you just push forward through triumphs or losses. A must play for anyone who enjoys games with a strong storyline and well-developed characters, if you were hesitant like I was about the "sports-ball" vibes like I was give it a try, I was surprised how much I loved the gameplay!
basically a basketball minigame attached to a visual novel with really awkward pacing. stops every 20 seconds so you can make the decision to click on either the single thing you can click on, or one of up to 3 "sidequests" that are just different conversations. i don't get how this can have the "story-rich" and "choices matter" tags when you cannot make any choices and the story is on complete rails the entire time.
This is easily my favorite title from Supergiant Games. The setup of a fantasy basketball visual novel can be difficult to sell people on, but that strange combination really works like magic once it clicks with you. Wins and losses really have a sense of weight to them, and few other games capture that emotional highs experienced in Pyre's closest matches. There's beauty to how the gameplay exists in strict service of its narrative impact, rather than being wholly separate; you truly care about winning because you're emotionally invested in the characters' stories. There are certainly some imperfections present, such as a lack of strong tutorials for what tactics you can use, but I can't help but love Pyre for how ambitious and strange it is.
Pyre is a very unique game. As someone who's obsessed with both of the Hades games, I recently decided to finally play the Supergiant games that came before them. I've heard several times that Pyre is the odd one out in Supergiant's catalogue because of how different it is from their other titles, which proved to be correct. The gameplay is nothing like Hades and nothing like Bastion or Transistor either (from what I've seen and heard). Pyre combines a very dialogue-heavy and reading-heavy story with sports-like gameplay, which starts out as being weirdly compelling to end up being incredibly fitting for the story the game tells. And I mean it when I say "sports-like." You play in teams, you juggle a ball, there's a scoreboard and everything. The game obviously puts its own spin on it and it's awesome. Apart from just being unique, the gameplay is also super fun! And if you really like the gameplay, there's even a Versus mode outside of the story with lots of customization available, if you just wanna enjoy the gameplay with no story strings attached. The unique nature of the gameplay is only furthered by Pyre not having a "game over" state at all, the story keeps going no matter what. I really liked how the game handled that aspect, especially when it came to defining what "victory" and "failure" even mean for you in this game. The story and world-building of this game are great. There is so much lore packed within this game that I'm excited to piece together better on a subsequent playthrough, but the image it painted for me on my first run was enough to fully draw me in. The lore backdrop also serves to emphasize the characters in the game, which are all super cool, both when it comes to your companions and when it comes to your adversaries. The game takes its time with characterizing everyone you meet, especially those who oppose you. It shows there is much more to them than what appears at first glance, and I became increasingly curious in how their stories would end as much as I did with my own companions. This should go without saying, as it is a Supergiant game, but the presentation of this game is perfect. The art is incredible and so is the music. They both serve to elevate the atmosphere of this game's world and story to great lengths. The music sometimes even dynamically changes depending on the circumstance, most often when it comes to the lyrics. And pretty much every location and character in the game have their own distinct theme song. It's just super cool, Darren Korb and Ashley Barrett show off time and time again, and it's always amazing to witness. Part of me wishes this game was longer, but the way it tells such a rich and dense story in a short amount of time is great. Also, there's a lot that can play out differently or things that you might miss out on depending on how your playthrough goes, so I'm excited to play it again for that reason as well. All in all, Pyre is a special experience. I don't really have anything negative to say about it. It's very different from anything I've ever played and I love it. And as is the norm for Supergiant, the end credits are peak.
