Telling myself I don't need to buy Hades II yet, I decided to finally finish Pyre. It's such a a gorgeous, compelling game. The world building is so unique and incredible, the gameplay is a perfect example of easy to learn, difficult to master mechanics. Choices matter and affect the storyline and ending. My first playthrough was around 25 hours, but I'm probably going to play it again. Play this game!!!

The gameplay felt easy once you 'get it', after that it became a visual novel with minigame in-between. When mixed together it kinda doesn't really mesh with each other and ruins the pacing of both.
This game really isn't for me. I wouldn't even leave a review if I didn't make it a point to review every game I buy. I only got this because it was on a very steep sale and I loved the art style. There just isn't enough gameplay here to keep me hooked. It feels too much like a visual novel and not enough like a video game even though I was hoping for more of a balance based on the trailer and the fact this game brands itself as an RPG before it does a visual novel. Most of the game is just text and relatively shallow decision making, with fantasy-coded football thrown in as an occasional minigame. The story and characters are good, but not good enough to the point where I'll get invested in a genre I normally don't care for like with a game like Policenauts. The art style also didn't disappoint, but that alone won't save a game for me. If you are into visual novels, then I would recommend this game. But if you're someone like me who thought the gameplay would matter more here than it actually does, heed this review.
I've been putting off reviewing this game for far too long. In 2017 I was at one of my lowest I had ever been mentally, even games I enjoyed couldn't keep my attention or fill me with and kind of emotional response, and I felt like my options and reasons to be around were dwindling. At some point my brother mentioned a game he got but hadn't really tried and for some reason I decided to download it and see if it could do something for me. 9 hours later I was crying and ready for a second play through. Pyre is always my go to recommendation for a game, the game play isn't for everyone but the story is spectacular, and I usually can't focus on reading stories in games. This was my first Steam 100% and for the longest time my only until Hades came out. I can say confidently this game saved my life, and I've heard similar stories from others. It's truly something else
Supergiant
basically a basketball minigame attached to a visual novel with really awkward pacing. stops every 20 seconds so you can make the decision to click on either the single thing you can click on, or one of up to 3 "sidequests" that are just different conversations. i don't get how this can have the "story-rich" and "choices matter" tags when you cannot make any choices and the story is on complete rails the entire time.
Solid CHOICES MATTER visual novel whose story and traversal elements are broken up by odd and awkward but weirdly fun 3v3 basketball segments. It's pretty short - 12 hours give or take - with a massive amount of replay value since there's all kinds of endings and relationship possibilities and all that. Story-wise it's rather typical fantasy fare, but there's enough polish here to make it compelling - the main cast are interesting enough, the giant matrix of possibilities the intricacies of the plot hinge on do keep you interested and the art does an especially great job at enhancing the world-building and the personality of both the cast and the overall story. I can totally see why Supergiant went with the 100-hour rougelite structure for Hades instead - there's a lot of text the vast majority of players will never come across - but if you liked Hades or are just intrigued by how Hades-meets-NBA Street could possibly work I recommend giving it a shot.
