I played the original game, and I don't remember it being so buggy. First, the graphics are better and worse. There is *less* portraits than in the old original. The overall quality of the graphics is better. Skills and everything look the same. Refreshed my original memories. Too bad I can't make a positive review as I just lost 25 hours of gameplay, because we have ONE save that is automatically overwritten. I had a quest to defeat 4 NPCs, and Captured the 4th. Guess what - now I can't proceed the Story quest and it says to "inform the other NPC" but nope, there is no option in the place where the NPCs are. Guess being so cheap to as to offer one single save with it having gamebreaking bugs sucks. And with the sheer amount of things to do (defeating enemies, sieging cities, capturing enemies, crafting items, training mounts, learning enemy skills) the option to lose all progress due to a random bug is laughable. Stay away from this garbage, it will just waste your time.
Game feels severely unbalanced. Tried out a rogue and struggled every fight, so I tried elementalist instead, now every fight was in my favour but enemies posed no challenge for the entirety of a first chapter, save for the fact they seemed to take way longer than they should. Health points seem meaninglessly inflated, I found myself dealing a handful of each damage each turn while enemy health entered triple digits what seems to be relatively early in the game. Some of the skills are infuriating to work against, messing up the board unpredictably while your enemy gets bonus turns if they happen to get lucky with the new layout, or in some cases blocking you from using spells entirely. Also of note is spell resistance, which seems to give a substantial chance to negate your spells entirely, which is a passive trait present in battles rather than a skill unique to specific enemies. This further reinforces the unpredictable nature of the game in a way that feels obstructive rather than entertaining. Random encounters are not only unavoidable but also carry the pacing issue I've referenced previously. You can face these at any point when travelling across the world map and they take more time to clear than is reasonable. There is little in the way of reward for your efforts, also, because the gold and experience you gain from these encounters is measly when you consider what improvements you're able to gain because of them. Ultimately, the game becomes a slog, I was intrigued by the notion of a match-three RPG but if Puzzle Quest is the best this niche has to offer, it would be a low bar to clear. I cannot say I've enjoyed this game in all twenty of the hours I have poured into it as of writing this review.
This is a very faithful, well-crafted remake/upgrade of the original game. That being said, it would be VERY hard to find a more repetitive experience. I usually play a stage or two and then close it; but that's about what I was expecting, having played it years ago on xbox 360.
It's remarkable that 15 years after my first encounter with Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, it remains the best match-3 title I've ever played. One might argue that you shouldn't try to fix what’s already perfect. ;-) Nevertheless, the Immortal Edition is here. Without overanalyzing every single detail of this remaster, I believe it's worth picking up simply for the bonus content that never made it to PC before. The graphics are solid, the sound is fine, and I haven't run into any bugs. There’s nothing left to do but match those gems and defeat Lord Bane once again. PS: I’m not sure if the original had this, but the remaster features a evil ending. It’s a little frustrating that a choice made at the very start of the game dictates this outcome. If you're a completionist looking for 100% achievements in one run, I’d suggest looking up a guide first.
puzzle quest is a really fun puzzle game with rpg elements, and i can play it with one hand, which is great since my new kitty loves attention, so i can pet her with the other, and all is good
I canot think of a game that is more deserving of a "neutral" recommendation than PQ:immortal. "Puzzle Quest: Immortal" is an updated version of the 2007 original. It is an odd choice for an update, as the same developer also released the more recent offspring: "Gems of War". So PQ is both older and younger than its own son. How's that for time-travel ? The mechanics have remained the same, the plot is the same and so is the dialogue, but the graphics have been souped up. Like its predecessor, PQ has only ONE save slot, which continuously overwrites itself. Essentially this means, a single wrong choice can paint you into a bad corner. This was one feature that could have stayed comfortably in the past. PQ is a match-3 game, through and through, with some additional RPG elements thrown in for flavor, but the core remains a question of matching gems. If you are looking for a pure RPG, I'd give this one a miss, and go for something more recent. However, if you like match-3 type games, or have a nostalgic spot for the original, this might just hit the right spot. Unlike the younger "Gems of War", PQ is a "premium" game. You pay a one-time price, and then you play the dookie out of it. GoW is a freemium game, that is fuelled by a constant nagging, begging and screaming for real money. For this one reason, I swing my "maybe" recommendation in favor of a "yes".
Played the original a lifetime ago, and always remembered it fondly. It is probably the most quintessential Match 3 game around, IMO. So, buying the remake with everything included was an immediate impulse buy. It's a perfect casual, save anywhere, highly addictive short burst, but easy to get back into, game that has become the mainstay on my Steam Deck when I only have a few minutes to play, such as in doctor's offices, waiting for shows or streams to come on, ect. Has a lot of very engaging parts to it, from character development, an actual storyline, stronghold building, RPG elements, equipment upgrades... Even just loading it up to see how it looked on the Steam Deck, I ended up spending the whole night playing it. The price is more than reasonable considering the amount of content and playtime you'll get out of it, and if you own a Steam Deck then it's pretty much a must-have game. It's solid, addictive, highly entertaining, yet can be played in even very short bursts and still have a feeling of progression, and its simplistic gameplay makes it so easy to get back into no matter how much the real world gets in the way. Truly a masterclass game when it comes to just simple addictive entertainment.
