Rhombus of Ruin is a great short title, the hours on this review is literally how long it took to beat the game (albeit I did use a nudging guide at 1 or 2 parts). The Cons: - Rhombus of ruin suffers from the same things a lot of modern VR titles do where the control scheme is only set for one type of headset, so using others gets a bit disorienting, for instance I have a Valve Index and the button mapping was different as opposed to what they show you in the tutorials for how to use the powers. - Story wise its good, but its a very short game so very little is actually furthered by the story aside from a lot of gags and one of the previous enemies from Psychonauts 1 getting a backstory. - Yapping, if you're slightly stuck on any puzzle or taking slightly too long (especially around the train sequence) the characters do NOT stop talking, which has always been a gag but they don't use it as a gag its meant to be helpful hints or just dialogue but it does not stop long enough before old voice lines get replayed over and over again, as well as if you click through a section a little too quickly or miss click you miss entire dialogue's for moving ahead to quickly. The Pros: - Short and sweet, you get into the game, the story is straightforward and doesn't add anything contradictory or confusing with Psychonauts 1, aside from the hang ups on Raz and Lily's relationship which continous in Psychonauts 2, and the fact that Ford Cruller is not with the gang despite leaving with them in Psychonauts 1. - The graphics are the best in modernizing Psychonauts style, it brings the old playstation 2 graphics to the modern age while looking clean but keeping the same visual style, unlike Psychonauts 2 which is similar but somewhat offputting by their attempts to retain the style but upscaled. Overall for a short title bridging Psychonauts 1 & 2 its pretty good to cover the short space between the two, maybe unfortunate for those who missed out on it because they don't own VR, but yeah if this game is on sale for cheap its a decent two hours of your time.
A cute addition to the Psychonauts universe and a genuinely enjoyable VR experience. Treat it like an extended interactive spy-thriller film and you'll have a great time - the entire experience is around 2 hours, 2.5 if you want to replay any chapters for achievements.
Psychonauts 1.5
A huge disappointment and one of the weakest high-budget VR games I've played. Almost no meaningful hand interaction, frustrating trial-and-error puzzles, and constant reliance on guessing what the developers expect rather than logical deduction. I spent more time checking YouTube than actually solving puzzles
It's a neat idea and it is cool to see more of the Psychonauts story, but it isn't all I expected it to be either. It feels good, especially for it being an earlier VR game, so maybe I am just expecting too much as somebody from the future looking back at old VR games. I feel like so much more could have been done with the game being in VR, the trippy mind areas would feel amazing in VR, but it wasn't really done in the way I felt it could have. I am not big of puzzle focused games, but it was still fun to play. I recommend it if it is on sale. Oh, also, I was able to play this game at 2.5x resolution 120hz on 9060xt (Similar to 5060ti I am pretty sure) and it was running well, so it isn't a hard game to run.
Short and sweet. Double Fine at their finest. I’d love to see another VR game from this studio.
Loved the puzzles, quirky characters and visual design
Its fine, didn't match the charm of the first game fully, but has its quirks
