· the most creative Art Direction & Writing I've experienced in gaming - probably the closest I'll ever be of playing a Gondry+Kaufman feature · funny as hell! had me laughing all the way through · great-looking and bug-free (in my playthrough), although not very-optimized - especially in one large open area (classic Unreal Engine game) · too much hand-holding for my taste, as your character sometimes verbalizes the solution for a puzzle, before you had enough time to fully analyse your current situation

Absolutely amazingly great game! Story and characters A++
[swimming underwater exertion] A beautiful game with modern graphics and an equally charming story as the first game. It also more delicately handles the issues that characters have, primarily the individuals the player roam the mental worlds of. Like the first game, I played all 3 game slots, all to 100% completion. While some abilities Raz has in the first game were swapped with other, newer ones, the team did ensure that the new abilities would be used in each mental world level in some shape or form. This game, sadly, does not recognize the Stadia controller as a usable controller, but it is better played with the keyboard and mouse than the first game. However, I do have to say that this game has a better taste in one's mouth when bought on sale. 60 USD is a lot, especially for a game that would take about 27-35 hours to complete the base story. I got this for $12, and that was $12 well spent. At least wishlist this until you get a notification for a good deal if you don't want to spend the base price.
What is this game?
Psychonauts 2 is the immediate followup to Psychonauts - following our main protagonist Razputin as he explores people's minds, with the goal of finding out the mysteries surrounding the villain Maligula's return.
Price/replay value
Horrible - Bad - Decent - Good - Amazing
Achievement hunting
Massively improving upon the first game by only having 2 missables (both very easy to get). The rest are mostly collectible/story based, with a few fighting ones sprinkled throughout. None overtly difficult.
Pros/cons
Pros

Incredibly amusing writing
Massively improves on the 1st game's gameplay
Charming cast of characters
Cons

Quite pricy without a sale (12 vs 60 bucks)
Less emotional impact than the 1st game
Invisible walls got annoying

Overall opinion
I want to preface this by saying I absolutely loved this game. The first was a blast but this blows it out of the water mechanically, graphically, and replay wise. The map is considerably less open, yet offers a lot more branching paths, the characters are still great, and the overarching narrative was still solid. I will say the first game had a really strong creepy tone to it (especially in the latter 3rd), and the asylum in that one had especially good writing. Though I found the backstories less dark, I still enjoyed the overall portrayal of different characters and how their actions all had unintended consequences (mostly). I don't really want to spoil anything so I'd recommend trying it for yourself.
tldr;
1st game but crispier.
Should you buy it?
Wait for a sale. I love this game but 60 bucks still seems quite steep imo.
a near-perfect sequel for the original psychonauts. its a master piece
