I've been waiting for 1KD's full release ever since I first tried the demo. As soon as it became available, I snapped it up and played through all 12 storylines in one 4 hour long gaming session. I enjoy speedrunning, so I'm currently in the process of trying to get platinum times for the 47 arcade levels -- it 's going to be extremely challenging! There's a lot to love. I'm sure other reviews will mention the vibrant colours and psychedelic art -- it's definitely reminiscent of (and compares favourably to) titles like Psychonauts, or even the original Crash Bandicoot for the PS1. The soundtrack is fantastic. The level design, in particular, really stands out. Several levels have multiple very different (and unique) pathways for completion, and it's very satisfying when you uncover something new. The impossible geometries on display often made me think of MC Escher's artwork. I think the story mode will be a little hit-or-miss for people. It is split up into 3 independent episodes. In each episode, you begin at a central platforming hub and play through a few levels to unlock 2 choices. Each choice leads to a branch, with its own platforming hub and levels. Getting through a second hub will unlock up to 2 "endings". In total, there's 12 short narratives to uncover. You'll switch between the 4 playable characters as you traverse their different headspaces and overworlds, and your choices will impact their circumstances and interpersonal relationships. My initial impression was that the narrative progress was difficult to follow and slightly jerky, especially since there's also large time gaps along with the character switching. Once I had gone through a couple of endings, however, I understood the formula -- and was able to appreciate the wacky writing. The dialogue is pretty funny! The overworlds and headspaces are visually striking. They have a few cool interact-able elements, and you can explore the area to uncover "secrets" which add a little extra flavour. But besides that, they are a little sparse. I would love to have more stuff to do in them. OVERALL: I'm really impressed, and highly recommend that you try 1000 Deaths if you're into the 3D platforming genre. It's an ambitious project, and I think Pariah for the most part executed their vision extremely well. 9/10
This games been nothing but an eyesore since I started. The camera and the "Mario Galaxy" type gravity system in tandem with the awkward controls and demanding platforming just make it unbearable to play. I'm getting nothing out of the story because of how difficult it is to read when the cameras popping into everyone's faces, clipping through objects and in random ass positions that make it nearly impossible to understand a word anyone is saying in the text. TEXT. And that's saying something, I've played some trippy and colorful games like this, and I LOVE trippy stuff. But this? This is literally the bad kind of drug trip man. I'm abandoning it and watching someone else play it.
If you enjoy games like Psychonauts then 1000 Deaths is perfect for you. Fun platformer with a very slick cartoony world and atmosphere. It feels like something out of the early Cartoon Network era and is a trippy ride that you wont want to get off of!
1000 Deaths is a very unique platformer - I love the colorful, wacky art style, and the controls remind me of something similar to Mario Galaxy, which is one of my favorite games! I can't wait to play more!
Man… this game is just fun. The whole gravity-flip thing is already cool, but the speed running in the TeeVee levels? That’s where it really goes wild. Each one feels like you’ve been dropped into its own weird little universe—bright colors, funky characters, and so many clever design choices that you can’t help but grin. They’re quick, punchy, and packed with little details that make you want to jump back in just to see what you missed the first time. The music slaps, the visuals pop, and the whole vibe is just… fun. If you’re looking for something creative, fast, and full of personality, this this a go!
ever since playing the demo, I've been obsessed with this game. I'm so glad it's finally here, and it hasn't disappointed thus far. The psychedelics graphics are super cool, coupled with the soundtrack, it feels like you're playing something straight out of MTV. Some of the platforming are a bit too hard for me, but he trial and error are worth it when you unlock a new path. The story is also super heartfelt and will make you question your entire life. I will gut you at moments, which it makes it feel like more than just a game.
Had to refund, about 6 missions in the physics are nearly impossible to work with to get through a level and I'd consider this unplayable at that point, the camera also doesn't help. I'm all for hard levels but they have to have some design logic to them that at least makes them doable, between the random platform physics, gravity not working reliably, no 'true north' guidance so you never know exactly where you're supposed to be going, and the difficulty of the levels themselves I can't recommend this unfortunately. The core art style and decision making is interesting in itself, too bad the game play doesn't match.
Seemed cool but it's unplayable, the camera doesn't help at all be it auto adjust (that is way worse) or not, the physics outside of the levels is basically random and in the levels isn't much better, which would be fine if the game didn't ask for precision, something that the game clearly doesn't give you at all. And maybe even more important, the jetpack, also because of physics problems mentioned before, not only is more an obstacle than an advantage, but it doesn't matter if you press both buttons to go up at the exact same time, the game randomly decides if it gives you that or if it makes you boost forward. I've played a ton of 3d and 2d platformers that works around shifting physics, and no, the game is objectively imprecise. And people complain a lot about Sonic 06 physics, ah, way more coherent than the one from this game I can assure you, and more fun to see it going haywire. I hope it gets fixed in the future, but I feel it's unlikely
Did I die? Where am I??? Don't let the cute characters deceive you . . . these levels (upside down, or right side up?) are to DIE for. Shenanigans be happening in this game. Clearly was a lot of fun to make, and is a BLAST to play. Loving the different art styles rendered during the TV broadcast sessions. An ode to sophisticated doodles. Dying over and over again. Getting attached to the four main characters. Dying some more. It's DRAMATIC. You're gunna love it.
