About
PsiloSybil is a classic linear 3D platformer with a faithful mid-90s look and brutal difficulty. You must guide plucky mushroom Sybil across a colourful world of devilish traps and defeat the evil master of all hogs, Lord Nutmeg, to set free all of shroom-kind. In each of PsiloSybil's handcrafted levels, alternating different playstyles and aesthetics, you'll meet a unique mushroom character held captive by Nutmeg's boar minions. Freeing them is not going to be easy!
The game also provides time trial challenges, and an optional arcade mode which reintroduces lives and removes collectables. It is also perfectly deterministic and employs no RNG, which makes it perfect for speedrunning.
PsiloSybil strives to reconstruct the classic look of PS1 titles. Not only are the world, characters, and objects modeled and textured with the limitations and visual trends of the time in mind: a full suite of visual effects ranging from vertex snapping to an emulation of composite analog video enhances the experience. All of this is customisable and you have detailed control over each component.
It may be an homage to a certain marsupial game.

Prefacing this review to say that I have all achievements, for context. Have had this game in the unfinished pile for a while and have tried playing it twice in the past, but, despite having Crash 1, a game I love, as its inspiration, I didn't get into it those times because of the design philosophy and difficulty, which are not my thing. This third time, though, something clicked and I've gone and got 100% with all sparkly mushrooms (perfect runs on levels). Despite not being into precision platformers or kaizo-like stuff, I really enjoy the level design here, and it feels super rewarding to finally nail that perfect run on a tough level (looking at you, CliffHanger), all thanks to the meticulously thought out set of hazards that the game bombards you with that link to each other thanks to the use of triggers to "enable" the level objects (instead of things running on a global cycle), which (for the most part) makes the levels have this "flow state" that makes them feel satisfying to speedrun through. Despite this, I'm personally not a huge fan of how the bosses are designed, which to me are just memorizing and dodging kinda precise patterns in small rooms with almost no breathing room (silver lining being, if you're not going for 100%, they do feature checkpoints between certain phases). Oh yeah, Arcade Mode is a cool idea and I managed to beat the final boss in it, but it feels weird to ask so much of a player in a game with this kind of trial-and-error design. Non-level design neat stuff includes the visuals, which shine with the myriad of old-school filters you can apply (including a very convincing PS1-style texture warping), and some of the music tracks, even if I admit a few of them get grating after a while, I can at least appreciate the experimental, ethereal vibes this game's soundtrack is going for. It's a quality title, but not apt for the faint of heart, lemme say!

An excruciating battle from start to finish. Every part of this game was made to kill you in some way. Just beating the game was harder than any Crash Bandicoot game ever. That isn't even beginning to consider the torture of getting all of the collectibles. I got two thirds of the mushrooms and gold skulls, but gave up because some levels were just too much. If you are a fan of difficult platformers, then I highly recommend Psilosybil. But do not worry about 100%, it will drive you insane. However I will say that despite the fact that many levels took over an hour just to get the time trial, it was very fun and the rush was almost incomparable.
VITUN PASKA PELI!
How does this game fare from the point of view of a lifelong Crash Bandicoot fan who sometimes 100%s the original trilogy for fun? * The gameplay is the best thing about this game. Like the cast in the final dimension of It's About Time, I was transported back in 1996 again. It's like playing Crash 1 for the first time - "hey, I can do it no probs" - "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, this game is impossible to beat" - "perfect! ta da daa!". The mechanics fully clicked after the first boss. (Full disclosure, I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm - woah! - halfway there). * I like that there are little to no gimmick levels (looking at you, Crash 3). I'm not entirely sold on time trials in Crash 1-style levels. NST must've shown why it's not the best idea. * The bosses are delightful, even though the first one, Chef Porcini, was responsible for 72 of my deaths. It's like beating Papu Papu - a zero effort boss nowadays, a quick way to see the game over screen in 1996. Nostalgic. Now I want more backstory for those guys. * Yes, this game is hard as nails, that's the whole point. * The presentation is lacking. Visually the game looks not like Crash 1, but like Crash 1 prototype - lots of untextured meshes, few animations, some objects look like placeholders, etc. Levels just float in a void and don't look like actual places, so forget about visual storytelling. * Soundtrack, well, Mutato Muzika this ain't. It does its job, but it lacks both atmosphere of Crash 1 and whimsy of Crash 2/3. * The one thing I hate about the visuals is the font. Looks like the font from CB1 prototype, but that font was changed for a very good reason. Final verdict: to fully enjoy the game, think of it as of a hardcore Crash Bandicoot 1 DLC.
Como el Crash pero con muchísimas más ganas de matar a alguien después de terminar un nivel y que diga que moriste 500 veces.
If you find Stormy Ascent and Crash 4 too easy, look no further >:)
Psilosybil is very reminiscent of the original crash bandicoot, except the difficulty here makes Crash 1 look like a walk in the park. However I think there is charm in it's difficulty. There really weren't many moments where I died and thought "this was the games fault". The global cycle on every obstacle is made so that you can realistically take as long as you want on a jump and as long as you time it right, you'll make it. The game has time trials for every level (bosses included!), and an arcade mode that starts you from the beginning and getting a game over means resetting. Both offer ample challenge to an already challenging game, really pushing the players skill to their limit should they want to take it. However even if you ignore both of those things and just play through the game while also ignoring the collectables and such, I think you'll still find yourself enjoying your time as long as you enjoy a good challenge.
Skill issue
Why did the mushroom go to the party? Because he wanted a piece of that PsiloSybil. Recommended for fans of shrooms. 3 psilocybins out of 5
