Prototype™

The concept, story and gameplay are great. I'd give that game, despite it's age, a solid 8/10 rating. BUT - and there comes the problem - it's highly unstable on modern PCs. First of all it crashed every time i tried to make a new game and load it. I fixed this with a community fix. Then, around hour 5 of gameplay, it started freezing and crashing regularly during one specific mission. I couldn't progress anymore, so i've asked for a refund. The refund was denied due to my almost 6 hours of gameplay. I've probably only seen half of the game. Rest is unplayable for me. Steam doesn't really seem to care if frequent crashes occur later in the game. Btw... according to Windows, it seems to be a memory corruption issue (MSVCR80.dll from the C++ runtime library). The game damages its own written data in its predetermined space. (Error code: 0xc0000409.)

Prototype is a gem of an old school hack and slash game. Its a great feeling being this super edgy badass wet towel of a biological weapon that staggers when grandma coughs in his general direction. There are definitely some technical difficulties for the steam port, but that was easy enough to fix. The combat while tedious due to endless waves of enemies that stagger you out of every animation is still fun due to all the combos and powers. The movement system is really great and it makes travelling around a ton of fun. I loved re experiencing the edgy ole story. Just playing through again really strikes home how good we have it in games nowadays. Just looking for all the collectibles is a nightmare as the best resource you can use is watching a youtube video or looking at an old map picture from older forums and hoping that you arent missing the collectible and that it was just one you casually picked up exploring around. Great game, tons of fun, really brings back the nostalgia.
