Amazing sequel to the original Amiga game from Team17! Great & fresh ideas added to the classic formula, amazing art that is coherent with the original stuff, both Brimbles had their input in the audio department. Such a great shooter, feels & plays really good. While I found it a tiny wee buggy, the game is getting constant updates and the developer is super active in the community forums, too. 11/10 already recommended.
Its Great, JUST BUY IT!
Fun and challenging game and responsive, friendly devs.
Just like the good old days, except tons of more content.
Good modern version of classic Amiga shoot'em up
Serious recommendation. I initially had some concerns about the game and the visuals during the early days of development, but the devs have genuinely surprised me with the end result. It looks GORGEOUS (especially with the scanline filter), and plays really solidly - moreso than anything from the larger studios as of late. It's actually a good deal of genuine FUN, - even more than the original which was insanely hard (never saw level 3....). Honestly, if you need a horizonal shmup, this is the one you're looking for. And the title them is by Allister Brimble too, which is suitably lovely. Must buy.
Brutal game! Before I played the demo, I played another game with the same upgrade mechanic which was decent and then I played this game and it blew me away. I like the upgrade system, the graphics, the weaponry and the overall vibe of the game which sends of a sense of urgency through the intro and the cut scenes. What I don´t like or don´t get is that my speed always downgrades in the first level. I grade it up to 5 a couple of minutes later it´s only 4 then 3 and so on. I don´t know if that´s suppose to be but I guess not. Then I had the problem that some times burst doesn´t work even if it´s leveled up. Although that seems to be fixed lately. Since today there is the problem that the 1st level boss fight is coursed. I can only shoot it with the flying explosives, my projectiles doesn´t hit and life bar deminishes very slow, make it impossible to finish the level under 7:30. Normally the first boss lasts barely a minute. Other than that it´s a beautifully crafted game. A part 2 is desperately requested. But first please fix the minor bugs and polish the game. It deserves it! --- Edit December 13th 2025, 7 pm: Thank you for your quick response: No I did not know Project X from 1992. Actually, I found out about it days after I bought Project X Light Years, when I watched a video on youtube. I didn´t have an Amiga back then. Only a C64, a Game Boy and a Sega Mega Drive. And I only got really obsessed with shmups in late 2021. I usually would go on youtube and look for new shmups and search every single one on steam which isn´t on my wish list. Did you program the original game as well? The Boss behaves normal again. Last night I really had an issue, that even after the shield was gone my bullets didn´t hit him. They were flying arround and besides him without hit detection. I should have captured it and the life bar seemed to be frozen, not steadily declining. Maybe it was my PC´s fault. But now it´s normal again. The Speed thing now I get thanks for the explanation. It´s a clever design. Yes I enjoy your game. It has a lot to offer in terms of replay value, a lot of game modes. And a great soundtrack. Thank you for going over each of my critique points. ;)
Instant buy for me due to bias playing the original and SE versions (original was balls-hard, hence the SE re-release). I really like the modern touches, I think they make it a bit more accessible to more poeple; less punishing on the power-ups for your ship (imo) is a good thing, because it honestly feels better shooting more things with ghiants weapons, than grinding back with a tiny pew-pew for half the level. There's definitely some creative flair added here and I like it - my only graphical concern (and this is nit-picking) is that sometimes the lethal buillets can be hard to see in the mix of harmlessd background atillery (such as that white fireball in that I always flinch on!), you get used to telliing the difference quickly but I wonder if on higher difficulties this becomes more trouble.. I looked up a quick guide of the difference in primary weaponry, but everything else is fun to explore and experiment, the levels are quite lengthy and entertaining, there's even some R-Type style claustrophobia moments which are nice change-ups to the open skies. PLUS the Dev is still making small updates, pacthes and QoL changes to hte game, hard worker! Music is Brimble-awesome as well.
I download the demo and I knew instantly that I needed the full game. The game looks and plays great. I love how dedicated the developer is to this game.
AMAZING TRIBUTE TO THE ORIGINAL! A MUST BUY FOR EVERYONE!!!!
