I can still clearly remember how I literally soaked up the game back then—though today, people would probably say I "inhaled" it. The game was running pretty much around the clock for me; I was always hunting for a new high score. It was never really about beating the game completely—I don't think I ever managed that, actually, because it was brutally hard at times, and the joysticks back then gave up the ghost so quickly... well... You’d end up with hand injuries from those things back then 😂—something you rarely see with modern controllers like the PS5 or Xbox. Most people today don't even know what it's like to have sore hands and blisters but keep playing anyway even though your fingers or hands were aching. That was real gaming, folks! 😂 🥵 Now, in 2025/26, this wonderful game has been released as a remake—one that is far, far better than the already excellent original. You have so many more options than back in the day: a wealth of game modes (Reloaded version, classic version, etc.), new graphics, old graphics—there’s something for everyone. Believe me, this new edition is a masterpiece based on the original "Project-X"; it is simply much better. Everything has been overhauled—music, sound effects, voice acting, graphics, and so on. The developer has truly created a masterpiece here—something I haven't seen before with any other game from the retro era (Amiga, C64, etc.). Anyone who grew up with the C64, Amiga, C16, or similar systems and enjoys these kinds of games should grab this without hesitation. You really ought to support this sort of thing. Plus, the developer is incredibly responsive when it comes to bugs; updates often drop the very same day. If you find a bug, just let them know, and it gets fixed really quickly. You get a truly excellent remake of what was already a perfect game back on the Amiga 500. I really wish more developers would... It’s wonderful to see MK Games pouring so much heart and soul into their project; the game you’ve created for us is simply beautiful—thank you. ❤️ Perhaps in the future, we’ll see other fantastic retro titles from back in the day, like *Turrican 2*, *Katakis*, and so on. My rating is an 11/10 because it is groundbreakingly brilliant. 😊 Played on: Linux Mint 22.3 Zena; runs flawlessly. Highly recommended—you won’t regret it; in fact, "regret" isn't even a word that applies to games like this. Is the game hard? To play? No. To master? Possibly—but anyone with enough time should be able to do it. 😊 Believe me, we didn't have this kind of variety back in the day. All in all, it’s a brilliant game from my past—one I wouldn't want to be without. For me, that era was the best gaming time of my life. Have fun playing! 🤗🎮
For Rico Holmes <3 For Allister Brimble <3 To dev: You wrote: "Advanced Continue System A modernized continue system gives you full control over your progress. Use allocated credits to continue your run, quit and save your session to resume later, or restart from the highest level you've reached. Play at your own pace without losing your hard-earned momentum." Pls give infinite continues, aka Freeplay as some of us are getting old and cant get past lvl1 and we want to see the rest of the game. Edit1: Im turning the review to negative now after the dev response. "full control over your progress" means "full control over your progress" As I wrote and u obviously did not read, cant get past lvl1 ... why not give freeplay for those that want it??? Edit2: Thanks, freeplay would be better but this is ok. Sol il turn it positive. That last line u wrote was not necessary. I have completed 100% All FromSoft games (just check my profile). Its not about that. You should read the feedback u receive more carefully. As I said. YOU SAID: "full control over your progress." thats why I wrote what I wrote. Dont over promise. Edit3: Ok Im done, when a developer flatly lies in between a civil discourse Im the one being gracious and granting him +review and asking the local Amiga Federation to buy heaps of this game. Il reverse that recommendation. My dude. You just wrote; "Wanna an easy ride? Oh, say no more — you got it. I’ve graciously unlocked all the levels for you." The problem is you did NOT!! The levels are locked!! You removed some bosses in a easy mode. PLS tell why on earth just a simple what I and many others asked for. JUST ADD INFINITE CONTINUES. I dont think there is many lines of code is needed for that to happen... Edit4. "“Mistakes happen. What matters is having the courage to admit them.” Indeed. and thak you for having the courage to admit that. Thats was all I asked from the beginning. Posivte review left, and + recommendation given to the local Amiga club. /cheersm8
Excellent, its faithful to the original with a modern edge, love it
We have been granted an incredible bounty, of side scrolling Sh'mups, in 2025. A plethora of amazing games have been released, and resting at, or at least very near, the top of that list is Project X: Light Years. You'll not find a harder working solo developer, who is constantly present in the discussions, and working daily to resolve minor issues. He is happy to interact with the community, and listen to our concerns. I have purchased 31 games on Steam, just since October, and I am drowning in new games to play, a wonderful problem to have, after the terrible drought we have all been under this past decade. Given side scrolling Sh'mups are one of my all time favorite genres, been playing this type of game since the 70s, and given the thousands of hours I have spent playing these sorts of games, you can expect a similar amount of time will be spent playing Project X: Light Years, just as soon as I free up the time to do so. Once I have finished a few play throughs, I will update my review with more details. But, what I have played has been very promising,, ultra tight controls, great visuals, and an excellent challenge. First impressions have been enough to tell me I will be spending vast amounts of time in this game. Check out this game, and support this developer, he has very much earned that much, at the very least.
One of the greatest SHMUPs ever, a true classic on the Amiga, gets an official PC reboot/sequel and it's an absolute belter. Not only does this provide an almost perfect recreation of the Amiga experience, but the tactical gameplay options offered by the new modes build effortlessly on the already top-notch playability Team 17's original. If you remember the 1992 version and have even the slightest nostalgia itch, do your memberberries a favour and grab a copy of this. Then wave goodbye to a significant chunk of your free time. And possibly your family. On the other hand if you don't remember the original, but are a fan of horizontal shooters, buy this anyway. With a range of modes and difficulty settings offering everything from zen-like contemplative meanders through the gorgeous environments to full-on bullet hell madness, it's hard to imagine anyone being disappointed with this. And if all else fails, just load up the title screen and relive those heady days of the early 1990s by squeezing into some skinny jeans and a Global Hypercolor T-shirt before throwing some shapes to the still banging theme tune.
Well, this isnt the Project X of my childhood. But it doesnt have to be, if I want the old one I can play the old one. This is a modern twist, more game modes, sound is better and well... so far this is harder than Silksong was. I dont know if I got old these past 30 years and my reflexes and sight arent what they used to be but man... the punish is real. 10/10 would fail to save Earth again. EDIT: After reading the developer reply to my initial review I owe a more detailed explanation on my initial statement. First - the game doesnt have to be inherently difficult as I described it. I am playing it on settings that are as close to the 1992 game as possible, and back in those days games were hard. I sometimes miss that, so I play on hardest settings games like this - its just a very, very rewarding nostalgia trip. It should not discourage anyone from playing this. All that needs to be said is that this isnt a side scroll shooter. it is THE side scroll shooter.
