The game undoubtably "Gets" what makes the stalker trilogy so much fun to play. The large, open levels punctuated with bone-grating underground 'dungeons' filled with loot, wandering squads of NPCs with goals that frequently don't involve the player, and a mountain of guns ranging from rusty blasters to actual laser guns will leave you hungry for your next upgrade until you finish your playthrough. I cannot stress enough how good this map design is. Unfortunately, that massive map is also the downfall of the game, because without a doubt the art is the weakest aspect. Point blank, this game looks like an asset flip. Everything is low poly, flatly shaded, and as painfully generic as $5.99 on the unreal store can buy. The models that are handmade look good, with a weird psudeo late 20th century setting that is a perfect fit for a stalker-like but they are few and far between in a sea of old sedans, green wardrobes, and military crates you've seen a thousand times before. Building interiors in the cities are especially guilty of this, with many rooms left completely empty aside from a pair of lonely green crates. The AI is unfair, wallhacking, quick to shoot and quicker to kill. If you're a stalker fan, you're right at home. Mash your head against the wall for an hour until you start finding the cracks in the algorithms, then use those exploits to raid the refinery with nothing but the starting pistol. Enemies are Fine for what they need to do for the gameplay loop but I do find myself missing the weird situations a proper a-life system would cause in the stalker games that so clearly inspired this. The story is one aspect that is already putting stalker to task even while the game is in beta. If you're a Lore Enjoyer, you have a lot to dig into and what's here is good. More than serviceable, the stories and lore contained within this setting are a love letter to the soviet fantastika that spawned this genre. Tragically, the only place discussion of this story takes place is the game's discord, which has locked all lore discussion in moderators-and-friends-only channels for explicitly gatekeeping reasons. Childish behavior, but the actions of discord moderators shouldn't affect a review of the game itself. TL;DR: Mixing a modern take on soviet fantastika with a modern take on the STALKER trilogy's gameplay, Project Silverfish is greater than the sum of it's parts even in early beta. One of the rare early access games worth every penny.
Simply peak, it's all I've really wanted <3
Love loots of fun
Huge Potential
another soul lost to the zone...
nerds would dismiss this as a furry game when furries have seemingly been the only devs to make anything decent in this genre the past few years. it definitely has that unity/unreal engine project vibe to it, but it genuinely has potential. it probably has bettter AI than stalker 2. if you like stalker i'd keep tabs on this and see how it ends up, maybe even buy it.
Furry Stalker with pretty fast progression. Much more reminiscent of the original stalker games. A large map with lots of static spawns, quests to complete, factions vying for control, mutants to slay, and lots of artifacts to collect that affect your character in various ways. Has a lot of quality of life improvements over the stalker games, is incredibly stable (never crashed), and is fully fleshed out for something supposedly in early access (0.4.5 as of writing). All the mechanics are laid out, plenty of weapons, lots of points of interest with unique things to find, and a variety of dungeons with their own little gimmicks. I think the game heavily lends itself to the "quickplay" permadeath game mode. The player spawns with a random objective to complete in order to pay off a debt (also spawn with random rep or attributes depending on game settings). Given how quickly you can get geared if you know what you're doing, these missions add a lot of moment-to-moment tension and mixes up progression. Currently the two main antagonist factions have very little you can do if you choose to side with them. Some parts of the northern area seem unfinished. I hate eating milk bites. No other real complaints. Any reviewers complaining about enemies with perfect aim and tracking should know the latest update has significantly toned them down. They're still plenty of dangerous, and can see you through foliage, but you will no longer be immediately swiss-cheesed upon entering line-of-sight. Going forward I would love more quickplay missions and ways to tweak my quickplay sessions. Overall amazing game that has consumed my last two weeks.
Project Silverfish is one of the better immersive sims on the market that takes huge influence from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The anomalies and monsters of the world feel threatening and the faction system means there's always little pockets of action going on. The weapon selection is bountiful and the dungeons are all unique and can genuinely feel unnerving at times. I love the little puzzles scattered throughout the game like making you read through business cards for addresses or text logs for hidden collectables. A few minor complaints I have are that the movement can feel a little floaty and that some of the guns could use an upgrade so that they feel more impactful. Stealth could also use a little work as enemies seem to be able to detect you far too easily or home in on your location once you've picked off one of their allies. I would also like it if there was a way to get every item in a single save file as it seems there's a subset of items that are loaded at random in end of dungeon loot boxes alongside a weapon modification system as some weapons are inherently unusable out the box with their existing modifications. My biggest complaint though is that there simply isn't more. In its current state, there's more than enough content to justify the price tag and overall, I'd give the game a 7/10.
