it's a robot wearing a poncho
Poncho tries very hard to imitate Fez, but falls short in every regard. The 2D layer shift mechanic is nowhere near as smooth as Fez's rotation but it could have worked if the level design made it easier to distinguish the different layers. Levels are all the same for the most part and, short of a couple easter eggs, lack Fez's level of detail or the infinite amount of secrets to find. As far as I could tell, finding all collectibles is pointless because you just get more keys and there were no doors left to open in the end. This makes the game loop rather boring since you spend most of the time either waiting for shifting platforms or painfully backtracking if you make the mistake of jumping into one of the game's many dead ends. Even with these time wasters, Poncho still takes less than 3 hours to beat (and can probably be easily done in under two), ending in a pointless and nonsensical exposition with at least five minutes of corny, unskippable dialogue that adds no value to the story. Trust me, spend a few more bucks and play Fez instead.
Clunky, unfinished game. Unfortunately it's just not up to snuff. 2.5/10
I'm very stingy when it comes to giving down-votes. The game has to be borderline unplayable and/or lazily thrown together. I have a lot of beef with this game, but I can't bring myself to give it a thumbs down. I can see a lot of people liking it. The protagonist is cute, the retro graphics are cool and the background/foreground travel is neat. For me, that was about it. The story is very basic and the ending is predictable. Some of the levels had puzzle glitches that caused me to be permanently stuck somewhere, requiring me to go to the world map via the pause menu. Other times, I didn't even need a key to get past a gate. The movement mechanics are easy enough to exploit so that you can skip at least several of them, which I did. While the environments were very pretty and colorful, I frequently found my view obscured by various foreground images and was very annoying. Not to mention some of the moving blocks were drudgingly slow. Will I play it again? Perhaps. Mostly to achievement hunt, I'm sure, but the majority of them are earned just by completing the story, which takes only a couple of hours. This game was part of a personalized bundle for me. The other game I wanted was more expensive by itself than the bundle. So, it's like Steam paid me to get this. Another reason to not down-vote it. Basically, it's a retro puzzle platformer with lots of collectibles. If you like that sort of thing, then you'll enjoy this title.
NOTA 6/10
Originally I couldn't recommend this game because the collection system was broken, and admittedly there aren't enough gems in the game to buy all the keys in the shop, on top of the fact that there are way more keys in the game than doors. Overall it is a cute game with a solid mechanic, first playthrough probably took me 2 hours or so, every other playthrough has been just trying to collect things and then realizing the collection system is broken and that the last achievement is ungettable. Luckily someone made a guide to modify the game's assets to fix that, so I recommend following that. Regardless, well animated game, cool world, a lot like Fez but much shorter.
PONCHO is a pretty cool game for what it is and kinda relaxing as well, great puzzles, great special effects, a nice catchy soundtrack, amazing pixel art, interesting story as well and unique for how its told. if you like relaxing, puzzling 2D side scrollers then this is a game i highly recommend grabbing a copy, also dont let the bad reviews effect your judgement on this game, i honestly dont see what the issue is. i wouldnt change a thing about PONCHO
The game is unpolished: ideas are there, but the execution falls flat. The main mechanic is creative, but the novelty wears down after a couple of levels, due to boring level design, repetitiveness and frustration. It's a shame, because the pixel art is very pretty. Besides, what definitely broke the experience for me was the fact that the developers abandoned support for the game and left one achievement completely unobtainable without cheating.
