Pocket Oasis is a gardening game where you take care of plants on your little balcony across various European cities. I loved the idea of it, but after playing, I realised that it is moreso a game that you have in the background that you sometimes attend to, or one that you play for a bit and then come back to. It is extremely, extremely slow paced and is not what I expected after reading the storepage at all Pros

Cute, watercolour hand-painted art
Variety of plants and objects to choose from
Said to utilise real geographical weather data to influence the ingame climate.
Cons

Almost no tutorial
Unnecessarily difficult and unclear controls
Extremely slow-paced, plants do not seem to grow quick enough to harvest to progress

If you would like to see more reviews written by me, please follow my curator page and help support my work Cookie Reviews.

Gameplay
When I first heard about this game, I was excited at the concept. I generally enjoy gardening, slow-paced, relaxing games where there’s not really an end goal, but more a focus on creating your own space and the journey to get there with lots of small goals to meet. Yet, in Pocket Oasis, I found it extremely frustrating and lacklustre. You are not explained anything, sometimes a bird comes with a few hints, but it is rare. I worked out that you need jam(?) to purchase new plants, items, pets etc. This jam acts as the game currency, but how you get it, is not clear. You can harvest chillies which give you very very few, and sometimes fertilising the plants seemed to give some as well. Then you must click on it in the top left corner to I suppose, turn it into jam. But the amount it takes to form 1 jar of jam is also unclear. In essence, you must harvest a lot of fruit and veggies to keep your supply up! I always made sure that each plant was within the adequate range of water and fertiliser. However, eventually, you reach a point where you are harvesting so rarely, that you cannot unlock anything else and you just have to wait…. Until your plant becomes infected with a pest. To rid the pest, you must use the currency you are saving up to finally decorate your garden with, but have to purchase the pest removal item instead. Most of the time, mainly due to the confusing controls (sometimes drag and drop, other times point and click), the bugs would just come back, and I did not have enough jam to buy more pest control so the plant would die. I felt extremely restrained when trying to decorate my own oasis as I was so restricted by the very little currency I had, and eventually, I ran out. Most of the plants I bought did not seem to bloom in 1.5 hours and I am unsure if they are growing in a more realistic time, or if it was the wrong season for them to grow. The catalogue does not seem to mention which seasons each plant is, so I bought blindly. My blueberries, kiwi nor eggplant never grew to a harvestable state which meant I had almost 0 income coming in. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3249890099 Due to the lack of a tutorial, the game is hard to understand, and I am still not clear if this is supposed to be almost like a background, interactive wallpaper game instead of a game you actively play when launched. I felt no motivation to continue and was unable to decorate how I wanted to due the games own constraints and feel that very little QA or testing went into this before its release.
Visuals & Sound
Featuring watercolour, handpainted art, the style is rather unique and feels very homely and comfortable. The sound is a faint but uplifting and equally relaxing, making the perfect atmosphere to potter around and tend to your plants. These are the best elements of the game.
Technical & Stats

This game was played using a keyboard & mouse, and with the following PC specs.: AMD Ryzen R5 7600x 5.4 GHz 32GB DDR5 5200 CL36 RAM Radeon RX 6800 XT 2560x1440 resolution NVMe 3.0 SSD Windows 10

Conclusion
It saddens me to not recommend this one, as I had high hopes for it…but I can’t help but find it a big disappointment. I suspect this is supposed to be played sparingly to let the plants grow, but for a $AU20.50 game, this feels rather expensive for a glorified idler. I was hoping for more of a simulator where my plants can thrive, and I can create my own little greenhouse. Instead, it was more like reality where not only do my plants die irl, but also virtually now too. I love the premise of this game. A somewhat idle game where I grow my own little paradise of plants. I didn't realize when I started playing it just how long it would take the plants to grow. At first this wasn't a problem because I would just log on once a day to collect my fruit and buy a new plant. I logged on this morning to collect all my fruit and realized I had quite a bit saved up for once. I had one infestation so I took care of that with some of my saved up money and logged off. Got on an hour ago and started tending to my plants. Another plant got infested so I bought another cure. Once that plant was cured another plant got an infestation of a different bug. Back to back I just kept getting plants infested with different things until I was out of money. The last straw was when a plant I had just cured immediately got infected again with the same bug while I could still see the ladybirds on the ground I had just used. This game either needs plants to grow quicker or make the fruit worth more money if I'm going to have to constantly just spend all my money on plant cures. Until they fix this I cannot recommend.
Gorgeous watercolor art and chill relaxing atmosphere. I like to leave it running while I'm working. The fact that your plants grow (but wont die) in real time when the game is not running is nice and its pretty cool how it uses real weather data for the simulation.
Here are my thoughts after a little over an hour of game play on both the Steam Deck and PC : The simple drag and drop game-play gets the job done. works great with the stream deck track-pads but i did find the controller support to be quite hard to learn and not very intuitive. the graphics and art style are just so COZY! so if you're into relaxing undramatic visuals, this is the game for you. loved the inclusion of so many languages, though i was bummed to not find ARABIC among them. Overall experience : the first hour of game-play is always crucial in retaining my attention and getting immersed in the game, so i found the slow pace quite jarring as i was just sitting there waiting for my chilies so i can unlock other crops... HOWEVER the more pots you have the more jam you can make, which made me excited to unlock all the crops and pets! I managed to find a few bugs in my gameplay BUT they're the best kind of bugs *cough* free jam *cough*. In conclusion, if you're a cozy gamer, i strongly recommend checking out this game and supporting yet another potential indie gem.
Very cutely drawn plant simulation game. Play to relax.
Angela Anaconda meets a gardening game! I check this almost daily to water and harvest my plants. The music is lovely, and the art is stunning! The hitboxes for this game are HORRIBLE! I dislike the bees because they overlap the plants and they hinder me from harvesting my produce. I hope there will be an option to hide them! 🐝🐝🐝 It uses real-time so you need to check your plants. Achievements are also easy to do! I would get it on sale because there's not much to do after unlocking some decor and plants. It's super relaxing to play though!
So.... I'm planning on keeping this game because it is a decent enough idle type game for me to play when I'm trying to clean my house. That being said... I don't recommend anyone else get it. Definitely not at full price. I got it at $3.59 during the Wholesome event and I honestly feel like I paid too much for the game. Don't get me wrong. The game is pretty. The hand drawn art is great. The game play loop is great. Buy a few plants. Let them grow produce. Pick the produce. Get apples (for some reason regardless of what plant you harvested). Turns apples into Jam. Use Jam to buy more plants, decorations, and things to keep pests off your plants. Amongst other things. The game is active enough to keep you playing while doing other things. As you need to make sure a plant has enough water and fertilizer. It's slow enough though that you can kick back and do other things and know that stuff is getting done without your active attention. The soundtrack is also lovely. But all of that... every single part of it... is kinda ruined by the fact that the game has almost no tutorial. It tells you almost nothing about how to play and let me tell you the game is no intuitive enough that you can figure some of it out on your own. For instance... the first plant you unlock is chili's. There's a meter for the temp of the plant. Logic dictates that you need to therefore have the chili plant in the sun so that it's warm. But no matter where I put these damn plants on the patio they are not warm enough. When you click on a plant there's a long bar at the top of the plant but I have NO idea what that bar does. Right now I'm *assuming* that that bar is the health of the plant. I'm only assuming that because the only one with a bar draining is my chili plants and they are also the only plants that aren't in the green for ever category of care (temp, sunlight, fertilizer, and water). Along with just not knowing HOW to keep a plant warm, the game does not tell you the needs of a plant before you buy it. So if a plant is, like the chili, not able to stay warm by just sitting on your patio. You have NO idea till you spend the jam to get it. I have now bought a cucumber, pineapple, and eggplant plant. All of these can not stay warm simply sitting on my patio and I did not find this out till after I got them. So I wasted my jam because instead of being able to just have self sustaining plants (other than needing water and fertilizer) I have now FIVE plants that can't survive without whatever I need to do to keep them warm... you know if I ever figure that part out. This game gives you... ZERO information essentially on it's mechanics or how to play it. In fact it cares so little about if you know what you are doing... that they don't even tell you how to quit the game! Pressing ESC does nothing. Instead you have to click on the season indicator in the top right, click on the house, then from there you can quit. But NOTHING in the game tells you this. I had to google it and just happened to find someone who asked that question and got an answer. Till I figured that out I was having to close the game via steam! It took me fore ever to figure out that holding click on a plant allows you to move it around, because the game never told me and where you have to click to grab it is not clear. I had tried clicking on them before but it did nothing because I didn't click EXACTLY where you needed to, leading me to believe for a while that you just couldn't move stuff. Luckily I looked up what few controls I could online and found out that if I delete a furniture item it goes back into the store and can be put back down without having to rebuy it... but if I do the same to plants they will just disappear. I could have accidentally deleted plants that took FOREVER to buy because the game can't even be bothered to tell you that clicking a button will kill the plant. There is SO little information given in this game. The only things that are made clear is what the currency is and how to get it. Then in your little book each thing that needs to be unlocked tells you exactly how to unlock it. From buying a certain number of plants to harvesting a certain number of fruit to freezing a plant. That's it. No other tutorial is given. I want to recommend this game. I want to say it's worth the money. But I can't. Because at the end of the day, for me, a bad tutorial is a make or break on a game and this game doesn't have enough people playing it to even find a decent tutorial online telling you how on earth to play. Again. I'm going to keep the game... ONLY because even though I have no clue how to do have the ♥♥♥♥ I need to do... I've figured out enough that it's like... "Might as well keep it?" Because I can hope that the dev fixes this particular glaring issue. Cause if they do then I can genuinely recommend the game and I'm sure I'll have fun with it. But at the moment it's barely playable because I have NO idea what I'm doing. I do have one additional problem... and that's that pests show up WAY to fast. Getting stuff to get rid of pests takes 2 Jam. Which doesn't sound bad till you take into account that that is 6 fruit and fruit takes... a LONG time to grow. I did find what may be a glitch where if you exit out to the menu for places and then click on the place your plants are again. Once you load back in your plants will have tons of produce on them. But I'm pretty sure that's an exploit. I don't think that's intended. And if it's not... then plants either need to produce fruit faster, or bugs and other pests need to pop up less frequently. End of the day. If you don't mind playing a game with almost zero idea what on earth you are supposed to do or if you want to support the dev... get it... but strictly on sale as far as I'm concerned. If you expect a game to actually want you to play it via telling you what the hell you are supposed to do.... if you get frustrated when you don't know what you are supposed to do.... then this is not the game for you. Possibly one of the worst games I have ever played. Don't bother wasting your money. A bird suggesting things to buy, which you can't afford, takes over your page so you can't even gather fruit from the plants you have planted. It is extremely slow paced. Can't even quit when you get so annoyed with it you've had enough. I had to use task manager to escape from this tedious mess!
