I absolutely love anything Vampire Survivors-like. Or so I thought. This isn't exactly that, but I don't feel the issue isn't that the game has its own twist. Instead, I felt like the gameplay was more about gunplay than strategy & player choice. Not my cup of tea. +Cheap +Functional aesthetics -Simple; boring; not engaging enough for me -Not enough player choice = Neutral review. Since I wouldn't recommend such game to myself, I wouldn't do it to you either.
Planetary Dustoff is an indie roguelite shooter developed and published by Rymdfall AB. Set in a distant future where humanity is searching for a new home among the stars, the game places players in the role of an explorer working for an organization tasked with surveying alien worlds. Earth’s resources are dwindling, and humanity has begun sending expeditions to distant planets in hopes of discovering new habitable environments. The player becomes part of this interstellar effort, traveling across hostile planets to investigate unknown ecosystems, eliminate dangerous creatures, and gather resources that might help secure a future for the human race. The story itself is relatively light, functioning mostly as a framework for the game’s exploration and combat. Rather than focusing on cinematic storytelling, the narrative unfolds through the premise of planetary scouting missions and the gradual expansion of a space station that acts as the player’s base of operations. Each expedition into an alien world contributes to the larger mission of humanity’s survival, creating a sense of purpose behind the repeated journeys into dangerous environments. While the narrative remains minimal, the science-fiction setting helps establish a strong thematic identity that connects the various gameplay systems. Gameplay takes the form of a top-down action shooter combined with roguelite progression mechanics. Players begin each mission equipped with basic gear and must fight their way through procedurally generated planetary environments filled with hostile alien lifeforms. Enemies frequently appear in large numbers, forcing players to rely on constant movement and quick reflexes in order to survive. The action can become chaotic as creatures attack from multiple directions, creating intense situations where positioning and awareness are just as important as firepower. One of the game’s most notable strengths is the wide variety of equipment available during each run. Throughout their exploration, players can discover an extensive arsenal of weapons and items that significantly change how combat unfolds. These tools range from conventional firearms and energy weapons to more unusual options such as flamethrowers, melee weapons, and deployable devices that alter the battlefield. Because weapons are found randomly during missions, each run develops in a slightly different direction, encouraging players to adapt their strategy depending on the tools they acquire. Another layer of gameplay customization comes from the selection of specialized suits. Each suit modifies the player’s starting abilities and determines how certain equipment behaves. Some suits emphasize ranged combat and defensive capabilities, while others introduce more unconventional playstyles that focus on close-range attacks or experimental tools. This system adds variety to the gameplay by allowing players to approach each mission with a different strategy from the outset. Exploration plays a key role in the overall experience. The alien planets visited during missions are procedurally generated, meaning their layouts change between runs. This procedural design keeps exploration unpredictable and prevents the environments from becoming completely familiar. Players must remain cautious as they navigate unfamiliar terrain, searching for resources, equipment, and hidden areas that may contain valuable upgrades. The unpredictability of each environment adds an element of discovery that complements the fast-paced combat. Between missions, the player returns to a central space station that serves as the hub of operations. As the player rescues survivors or completes objectives during planetary expeditions, new characters gradually join the station. These individuals unlock additional features, services, and upgrades that improve the overall capabilities of the expedition program. This hub system creates a sense of long-term progression, giving players the feeling that their actions are slowly building a larger community within the station. Visually, Planetary Dustoff adopts a colorful pixel-art style that draws inspiration from classic arcade shooters. Characters, enemies, and environmental details are presented using bright sprites that remain easy to distinguish during the chaos of battle. The alien planets themselves feature a variety of terrain styles and environmental hazards that help differentiate each mission. While the graphical presentation is relatively simple compared to larger modern titles, the pixel art aesthetic suits the fast-paced gameplay and helps maintain clarity during intense encounters. The audio design contributes to the atmosphere with a soundtrack built around electronic and ambient elements. The music shifts between calm exploratory tones and more energetic tracks during combat sequences, reinforcing the rhythm of the gameplay. Sound effects for weapons, explosions, and enemy attacks provide satisfying feedback that helps make each battle feel impactful. Despite its strengths, Planetary Dustoff does have some limitations that may affect long-term enjoyment. Because the core gameplay loop revolves around clearing areas, collecting equipment, and surviving waves of enemies, the experience can become repetitive after extended play sessions. While procedural generation adds some variation to the environments, the overall mission structure remains largely consistent throughout the game. Additionally, the difficulty curve can be steep for new players who are still learning enemy behaviors and weapon mechanics. Even with these shortcomings, the game succeeds in delivering an engaging roguelite experience that combines exploration and chaotic combat into a satisfying gameplay cycle. Each run offers opportunities to experiment with different equipment combinations and strategies, and the gradual expansion of the space station adds a sense of progression beyond individual missions. Overall, Planetary Dustoff is a solid indie roguelite shooter that captures the spirit of classic arcade action while incorporating modern procedural gameplay elements. Its diverse weapon systems, customizable suits, and exploration-focused structure create a game that rewards experimentation and persistence. While the repetitive mission structure may limit its long-term appeal for some players, it still provides a challenging and entertaining experience for fans of fast-paced action games and roguelite design. Rating: 7/10
Great addicting gameplay, like Heroes of Hammerwatch
This is a great contained rogue-lite with excellent replay value. The keywords for this hit all the right notes with me, I'm a sucker for high octane rogue-lites such as Nuclear Throne and Enter the Gungeon, and this fits in right in with that crew. It's a bit too simple to say its a game ill play hundreds of hours like the previously mentioned games, but it definitely has me enjoying what it does offer, and this is a game I can easily recommend.
Planetary Dustoff is a very solid game even though it is only in Early Access, the core gunplay and mechanics feel responsive, the sound effects have punch, and I love the attention to detail (you can see your reflection when you walk over a puddle etc.). Seeing as I only have a few hours under my belt, it wouldn't be fair for me to talk about content. However, I do have a suggestion that is gameplay related: The melee animations for weapons aren't quite aligned with the area of effect that they damage when swung (e.g. the arch of a sword doesn't link up with what it actually hits). I am looking forward to seeing this game develop over time. (This review is primarily for the developers)
