Update 7/23/18 Was one of the first purchasers of this game and still 4 years later I get great joy to pop this little gem open and destroy things. Previously Pixel Star is an addicting and fun shoot em up where progression is chaos! If you like to blow up ALL things then get this! You won't be disappointed. But if you are looking for a fast 100% game this may not be the one for you unless you are just that super awesome. However i find it a welcome change with the challenge for a few achievements (or super awesome blind luck) versus some other games handed achievements, linear play or progressive killing grind. When you start the game you get to customize three aspects of your ship. The Hull, Utility and Secondary weapon. They all have their uses and obviously it will be what fits your play style. I really loved picking the magnet in Utility to have all the asteroids and enemies get sucked into one spot so i could blow them up, and use the rainbow cannon as my Secondary to make it that much quicker. In early game this will net you a lot of power ups quickly. Magnet also worked great to toss out when trying to escape. :D Here are the options for a quick glance.

Hull

Invulnerability
Regenerate secondary ammo
Faster utility recharge

Utility

Teleportation drive
Deflection mirrors
Ultra magnet
Force blaster
Liquid plasma
Slow time

Secondary

Homing missiles
Timed bombs
Attack drones
Static generator
Gatling gun
Rainbow cannon

Once you get into the game you will see the controls as part of the background and begin your killing. There are many many enemies, and a first they will seem easy and silly and then as you progress you will find some of them are rather tricky and can one shot you if you are not careful. There are also a lot of power ups you can obtain. Lasers is the best, they have a red circle and they stack up making your default attack more powerful with a lot more laser beams. Then there are also Barrage which add projectiles to your attack. It really does get chaotic! There are also Repair that will stack up giving you the ability to take more damage, and last longer of course. There are Shield power ups which do exactly that, shield your ship from attacks. There are also little drones that float around your ship and help attack. The rapid fire is a short burst, great to snag before a boss. There are also Flare that float around your ship and if an enemy gets too close they will be destroyed, otherwise they sort of act like another shield around you. Ammo of course for your secondary weapon and a Secondary Power to make it stronger. Then there is a Turbo that will boost your speed for a short time, and a few are needed in a row to obtain an achievement. In addition there is a Civilian bounty on screen, a yellow exclamation, that you don't want to destroy as flying into it will give a power up.

Fast paced, simple, and fun, Pixel Star writes a love letter to the large old arcade machines like Asteroids while adding in quite a few dashes of modern flavor to keep things fresh and interesting. No deep plots here, this is score attack and bragging rights at it's finest, coupled with enough modification options to the load out of your ship that everyone can find a style that matches them, and experiment with others without feeling overwhelmed. Music builds with the difficulty curve, adding to the hectic laser flinging as the screen starts to fill with enemies when just moments before you were surrounded by a deceptive lack of anything not to mention the occasional bosses to break up any complacent cruising. Random AI and a large selection of foes will also guarantee that each play-through is never the same, while matches don't tend to last too long, making this game a fine choice to pass a lunch-break as well.
There are games with multi-bajillion dollar budgets, and there are games like this. Made with love and brains; I was quickly blown away while simultaneously addicted with clever gameplay mechanics that kept me itching for 'Just one more run'. A solid classic kick-arse shooter with the price point of less than a coffee. Why are you still reading reviews? Get it! Love it! (Attempt to) Beat it! Bonus: I asked the Developer about a possible bug with lag/movement speed... Me: the red swirl is supposed to halve your movement speed? Dev: red swirl in the shield boss fight? Me: yup Dev: oh, there is one thing that will slow you down that's intentional - little jammer guys that darken the screen with speckles etc. disables your shields and reduces movement by 60%, those guys creep around in that boss Me: yup just died... and yeah it's that sparcle stuff that laggs ya Dev: I've been waiting for this opportunity Dev: "working as intended" Dev: :D Me: muhahahaha I got pwned. Laughed my arse off. Top notch guy.
This is not that bad game for only 3€ but I feel there is not enough content in it. It have very simplistic visuals and very little variety in enemies or environment, after 20min you almost see it all. AI is almost non existent, very simple and most of the time suicidal :) boss fight are little more interesting but there is only couple of them. Little progression would help, right now you have all possible weapons and utilities available for you from the start and after short while of testing you stick to only couple most useful, unlockable weapons and maybe ships would give this game longer life and make it more interesting. Particle system looks good but sometimes is to much on screen. Game tends to freeze for a sec from time to time on my 980Ti and i7 so it is very surprising for that simple game. Screen shake after detonation in bigger fight tends to create mess and you can get lost very easily. Menu is thumbs up, it have mouse support, couple basic options and you can rebind keys, sound very basic but lots of simple games and even AAA console ports doesn't have that.
Another arcade shooter similar to Asteroids. Fly in space, fight enemies and occasionally stumble across boss battle. Not very original and visuals leave much to be desired. Safely skip this one it doesn't introduce anything new.
Very addictive and fun shoot em up game... Takes me back to past years.. though can't remember the name of the game but it was great... ^_^ Clever gameplay mechanics which will keep you itching for 'Just one more run', as well steam achievements on this game are hard to earn... Having a hard time even making it over 5 minutes before its gameover,.. :(
Pretty simple and limited game. Does provide some variaty though with hazards, preselecting a usabke utility skill and ammo-dependant secondary fire. Just one mode: Survive as long as you can with increasing difficulty, new enemies and bosses. I didn’t like the over-pixelated graphics style. It’s fine for what it is, but has limited content, adding variety and depth to the single game mode. As long as you are aware of that, go ahead.
