This game has lots of appeal for the right player, and the price is excellent. The game is primarily a nicely-illustrated Choose Your Own Adventure, with optional card battles. The card battles use both Spell cards and Item cards, which are drawn randomly during battle. The art is cute, there are mysteries to solve, and you can refight any battles you couldn't win because of bad luck with cards. The game is suitable for both adults and kids, but that's both a strength and a weakness. See relevant details, pros, and cons below. Good to know: - the setting is based on Harry Potter to an extent that may detract from the more original points of the story - despite the clear Harry Potter inspiration, the story and characters show originality - there are only a limited number of item and spell cards available (12 and 10 respectively) - there are only a limited number of special creatures to battle (7) - this is a Choose Your Own Adventure style game Pros: - nice art, appropriate music - several branching routes and character interactions (more than I expected for price) - simple enough for children who enjoy reading; enough mystery for adults looking for a very casual game with choices - some limited voice acting (just phrases when a character sprite appears) - price (it's about $3 US, less on sale) - Steam achievements Cons: - lack of saves means no going back to a mid-point to try different a different ending [I understand this is intentional, but overall I think at least a few basic save slots should be available] - card battle needs a clearer tutorial [good if simple system once understood] - lack of story resolution, as game is intended to be first part of several [may not be a con if a sequel *is* produced] Overall: As long as you know what it is going in, this is a fun game and good value for the price (even without a sale). Recommended for casual and/or family play.
Commendable visual direction, underwhelming everything else. For the price, I had very low expectations on the production front; Even low budget games can be engaging and creative. This game is neither. I wanted to like the characters and I wanted to enjoy the story, but ultimately I was so bored I dropped it altogether. Buy it if you want. You won't miss out on much if you don't.
Game would not run on my laptop that runs most other games just fine had to switch to a different machine. Staff did not respond to my post asking for help getting to run The game is ridiculously on rails and most of your choices do not matter. It does a decent job setting up the atmosphere but the characters are generally flat and do not develop, most of the game is aimless faffing around. There's one genuinely interesting plot twist but it comes up so later that it feels more like sequal bait than anything else.
It's like a fever dream. Nothing makes sense. You just get bits and pieces here and there, feels like you're missing tons of information. Your choices mean nothing. For something that's so reliant on narrative, that's unforgivable. This is purely a VN, ignore the other tags. There's technically a rudimentary optional card game (you can fight a couple of creatures as "challenges"), but this is just tacked-on and uninspired, and has nothing to do with the core game itself. Took me a bit over two hours getting through it; you're probably better off just watching a Harry Potter movie. If you're still interested despite all this, do note that this is only Year 1, and the game just... ends. On a massive cliffhanger. I wouldn't hold my breath for a sequel. If you want to be blue-balled by a Harry Potter-like game, go play Academagia instead. At least that has some meat and depth.
Rocwood Academy is a boring visual novel plagiarising Harry Potter universe. If you are like me and thinking there may be a cool card battle system - skip this game. Card battles are shoddy and actually optional - their outcome effects nothing and they're not even a part of the story.
The writing/characters are so shallow and terrible.
lol the very beginning of this game starts with you choosing to sit next to a black or white student in class. if you choose the black student, the first thing she says is 'hi, i'm estrella, and yes I'm from Africa." lmao the tone deafness and how horribly bad that is is just laughable. she goes on to say that she's in a wild tribe and asks you if you have a problem with it. devs, it's 2021. there is no excuse to be this ignorant and self-unaware. do better. uninstalled in 6 minutes.
Well, what can I say? The story moves so fast the flash could not keep up with it; your choices do not matter; it is a Harry Potter ripoff, and the battle system is useless. Does the game have good points? yes. Almost every kid character is cute, and almost all adult characters are good to look at. The art is simply gorgeous. This game is the opposite of Academagia; while that game has wonderful writing and a terrible interface, this one has shallow writing and a gorgeous interface. It just lacks so much stuff that I cannot recommend it.
