edit: In the past few months, the developers have been incredibly active in their updates for their game and responsive to the feedback provided. Due to unfortunate circumstances, I've had to migrate to MacOS, making me unable to play the game. This review can certainly be considered outdated by this point, but it would feel disingenuous to swap it to a positive rating when I can't test the changes for myself. Pirates Outlaws 2, a game with potential. Not in its current state. I'm a long time fan of the Pirates Outlaws series, since playing the mobile version of the first game. I will admit, this is a solid title in the steam catalogue, but there's a significant caveat with that, and the only reason I'm giving it a thumbs down. The game does a few things that sets it apart from other rougelike deckbuilders, but otherwise follows the same formula. For one, card plays are not based on energy per turn or a set number, no. Each enemy has a timer beneath their sprite that, when you play a card, reduces by 1. When it hits 0, they act. It's a fun gimmick that does hold some real weight, but there's very few ways to actually influence that timer or prevent the action from occurring. I think, in a way, they could almost lean into some form of aspect utilizing such an ability. Every card, once you have 3 of its copies in your deck, is capable of being upgraded (edit: I lied, wolf card can't be upgraded). Most have two paths, some already have one. Whichever path you take can also be upgraded, to its third level. A majority of ranged cards (some of the strongest cards in the game) cost ammo, which can be reloaded with specific cards or by your characters unique ability. Every character has access to the same cards, except for a single one that changes between classes and sometimes changes depending on your pet. The issue with this is that it encourages a thick deck, because you want your upgrades. Maybe I'm viewing it in the wrong light. You do have the option of upgrading cards in select shops, which costs gold, of course, but it usually seems better to go for the duplicates. Because, after every battle, you have your selection of 2 cards. The issue with a thick deck is you don't get the cards you want, and the issue with a thin deck is you can't upgrade the cards you want without spending gold. That's a bit of dilemma, isn't it? Shields and healing is your only form of defense. Typical rougelike, nothing special there. Except for the fact there is one of the most egregious status effects I've ever encountered in one of these games. Wound. Wound doesn't seem that horrible at the beginning. Several of the smaller enemies have an attack that adds 3 wound. Each time wound triggers, you take damage equal to the number, and then it reduces by 1. It stacks so ungodly fast that once you have a couple, it's effectively impossible to circumvent that. edit: Much of the wound has been dialed back (although I cannot personally confirm this), and it can in fact be removed by alternate status conditions such as Drunk. The bandage, and its upgrade. You can't outheal wound. You can't shield wound. All you can do is pray the bandage appears in your deck and slap it on. As mentioned before, how you build your deck can completely screw you over. It seems mandatory to have a bandage for every finger on your hands and toes, and yet it's often you're not offered these bandages. And once you have three of them, the upgrade is forced meaning you lose 2 of your chances to remove that wound. It's truly the worst experience I've had to push through. Some of the bosses prioritize this especially, and god does it feel impossible. I also have to say, it's an ungodly amount of grinding to get new cards, classes, or pets, due to how much gold they cost and the fact you need to level. While it normally wouldn't feel that significant, their gold costs are equivalent to buying a hundred cartons of eggs just to smash them all on someone's car. For what you're getting, the gold expenditure feels excessive. Obviously this review has been a fairly negative view on the game as of right now, and I do want to love it. It has its uniqueness. It has its moments. It has potential, and that's what really matters with these deckbuilders. They just need to capitalize on it, and maybe revamp Wound. It make me want to stick a shotgun up my ass and blast my balls off from within.
For now it's just not interesting compared to the first game. At the first blink it looks like there's a lot of depth but still every run feels the same.
The game is extremely dry and bland. I don’t see any new mechanics, and their number is surprisingly small. Overall, there’s not enough content. First and foremost, work is needed at least on a proper settings menu. The game provides a maximum of 3 hours of entertainment. I would only recommend it to people with no taste. Yes, the game is still in early access, but that’s no excuse for making it so raw and empty. Especially since version 0.7.7a already feels more like an alpha version.
