Reviews
I usually don't pay attention to early reviews since I think they're just developers or family members, buut as a DM, gotta tell you this thing is amazing. As a long term Dungeon Alchemist designer, I was converted to this in about 1.5 hours. All of what you wish you could do in DA, you can do here. No creative restrictions, finally. Want a multi floor castle? Yup. Want zero vertical limits? Yep. I could go on and on. Edit: 2025 Update This has been completely eclipsed by Dungeon Alchemist unfortunately, and they seem to be focusing on Scfi-fi and not fantasy. Well done devs! I use it only as a designer, not as a full VTT---and it's just superior. What a breath of fresh air--and this is early access? It's ready to go right now. This is the #1 VTT designer out there.
Solid VTT with an extremely responsive development team. This will be the best 3D VTT, if not the best overall VTT in the next few years. Check out the Videos for Brave Alice Games on YouTube to see the system in action. Edit November 2024: A year after my initial review, RPG Stories continues to evolve in all the right ways. A testament to the development team is listening and being reactive to the community.

The most intuitive 3D map builder on the market. I found it easier to use than Talespire, and like that it allows you to play in it unlike Dungeon Alchemist. Add in over 5,000 3D models over a variety of genres and you've got a winner on your hands. EDIT: At nearly 300 hours in, I'm still using it. I've played Star Wars, Fallout, and Sword and Sorcery campaigns with all the assets I've needed for all of them. Even better yet is the Steam Workshop integration, so now if you need a popular map, odds are one of the MANY cartographers here has made it.
I initially bought this program to create maps, but it turned out to be more of a "videogamey" tabletop tool. While I found it somewhat useful for making Call of Cthulhu maps, I switched to CAD programs like QCAD and FreeCAD because floorplans fit much better with my table’s style of play. This tool might be more suitable if your gaming group needs 3D visualizations to enhance immersion or to compensate for a lack of imagination. However, I believe these features can detract from the game’s experience. The effort required for the Game Master (GM) to learn enemy placements in a 3D environment and to host a server for player connections (each needing their own client) is simply “too much effort”. This contrasts with programs like Foundry VTT, where only the GM needs to purchase a license, but you still need to learn how to host it. The complexity involved makes it less appealing for a few hours of gaming with friends. I would recommend using this program for some basic map designs or to create simple scenes, such as a Cthulhu model overlooking a boat in the ocean, which it handles quite well, though I’d still pass this through an AI if possible to add some effects. For actual gameplay, I prefer “simpler” solutions like a Discord plugin for rolling dice or Foundry VTT combined with some JPEGs found online. Despite its drawbacks, I still recommend this tool for its assets, which make scene creation straightforward.
this game needs a lot of work tone down the upfront complexity make the UI bigger whats on offer here is cool in a trailer but in practice its a whole lot of unnecessary clutter outside of the 6000+ objects and better mapping tools youd be better off going with tabletop simulator you can roll dice, use pictures to represent characters and maps, add music all can be done simple and easy update 5/4/24: after playing a bit more and testing with a friend here is the verdict... POSITIVES: + the game has dice build in for different game systems + 6000+ objects for you to use + object tagging lets you better find what you're looking for verdict of the positives: use this program if you just want to make a map and nothing else NEGATIVES: -this program is 20-40 dollars compared to tabletop simulators 20 dollars and the only thing this game has over tabletop simulator is its 6000+ models... - too many buttons involved with moving the camera... 2 for moving it up, 2 for moving it down, wasd for usual scrolling, right click for faster scrolling... why cant i use wasd + right click to move the camera up/down/left/right - not enough object properties as its rotate sideways... delete... and clone... what about changing color, naming the object, adding a description, adding scripts, etc -the game as is fails the ultimate test for me personally and that is it is not in a state where i would ever run a game using it i feel if these issues are addressed this game would be a must buy: (tabletop simulator has many of these though they arent perfect) [] make the UI larger [] make it possible to have 2D assets stand up instead of being a graphic on the floor [] i should be able to simply join the hosts game and not need a code [] players should be able to interact with and move pieces in the game world [] fog of war is a joke its just a black or white box that you can see objects in if they are big enough [] the camera controls are could use the keyboard and have the mouse for interacting with objects or spinning the camera [] give more options for customization like different camera controls, changing the map size/limit, make right click bring up object properties, add object physics, add music, let players interact with the map like GMs, dynamic fog of war, etc a quote from a friend who tried the program with me "this program feels like a GM who has a huge idea for a campaign with tons of pieces and locations and npcs etc, but they have no focus or direction its just a bunch of ideas" i would rather play a game over text than use this because it would be faster OR i would use tabletop simulator as its cheaper and while it has fewer tools it is far more robust and the program is far from perfect hence why i was looking forward to this... ill wait to see if the grow to meet tabletop simulator and eventually surpass it. "is it better to have 1000's of npcs and locations that are hollow and maps or 10 npcs and locations that are fleshed out"
Love this software!!!! Whether you enjoy building manually, or you would prefer using premade builds that you can easily modify, RPG Stories is an awesome program. The community regularly shares new projects and items for everyone to use, and there are thousands of models available (monsters, characters, floors, fences, walls, etc.), plus lightening effects, fog of war, spell effects, multiple dice sets, and customizable grids (including hex grids). They are about to release multilevel building support and the ability to peek through doors as well as open/close them. You can easily increase/shrink/tilt/move/group objects, and the team has continually added features beyond what they originally promised. I don't usually write Steam reviews, but I really wish more people would take a look at what RPG Stories offers.
Probably the most useful tool I have ever used for my TTRPGs. It is also freaking perfect for your level design needs if you do not want to start something from scratch in Unreal or Unity, buy models, optimize assets etc etc. Insane support and communication from the developers with frequent updates and the most important part is that the product is still in its infancy! The features that are going to be added and the thousands of models make it a must for any creative person! Worth it to the last penny!
cool software that is only getting better. Looking forward to multiplayer and a few more updates to make building multi storied buildings a bit easier.
Soooo... This might be a long review. I'll try to streamline it a bit... Total recommend at FULL PRICE to tabletop players, virtual tabletop players, tabletop rpg artists/creators, full fledge game developers, artists, concept artists and mappers... seriously. all of those apply and none are listed "just because", the details: as an artist, author and... blah blah blah... this has fully just taken blender's place when it comes to level design, world conceptualization and outside of blender... "LORE BUILDING". (totally went overboard... heres a streamlined list): - (built in & dlc)massive environmental prop library(base content definitely varied enough to build with creative depth... the dlc just adds more variety by way of Prop genres); high quality and combined with lighting and color grading effects(separate feature) allows for creative modular use and cohesion for artists to build extremely complex environments that is very unique in that artist's specific style. each dlc adding a substantial amount of content at 6$ a piece which is awesome. - the quest log writer or journal... provides an in engine tool to manage story content and notes... I have always praised tools that keep you comfortably within a single workspace... so having the ability to design full 3d environments as well as the ability to open the journal to develop some story content or lore... or just jotting notes in a really natural way(not a random windows themed note pad) within the same workspace. - there are 3d pin markers and other useful tools for tabletop(physical or virtual) players and game masters that I use not as any of those lol... they are just more "noting" and 3d "pinboard" tools for me personally lol. they are great. - the weather effects, premade particle effects and color grading tools are simple to use and understand. in combination, like most visual effects tools provides a world of possibilities and more importantly, control over the tone mapping(as stated before... going to try to not repeat myself lol). oh, my favorite tool for map creation... "fog". you have access to to a few options in "types" of fog, haze, sandstorm, etc etc etc... to see what feels right for you and the specific environment your working on. it's great. - lighting tools are simple but ABSOLUTLY EFFECTIVE lol. im a strong lighting artist... fog... lighting... color grading... thats my thing... the secret sauce to my environments lol... no but seriously, it's pretty solid here and the properties available are fantastic.(be sure to set the app's graphics to max, if your system supports it... it took me about...since it launched originally on steam... maybe a year? before I realized, like a game... I can crank the graphics up lol. do that if you can lol... it really brings this tool a solid several steps above the others so far. you can produce absolutely legitimately gorgeous environments in this). - supports audio which is cool... - supports "perspective" and "isometric" camera types... - supports standard camera effects: DOF, FOV, chromatic ab., vignetting(spelling... sorry lol)... etc etc. - each project supports "multiple environments" using a "tab-like" system... present at the top of the viewport. which is great for and organizationally insane person like me...(that... phrase...) - solid customer support. the developers are the customer support... and they are actual humans... with feeling that actually care about their users. this is a big one, TOP NOTCH USER SUPPORT... seriously. just really sweet/kind supportive people. - performance is pretty fantastic. there are occasions when launching, the screen will dim and seemingly load...? but if you press "esc", it goes away and your map pops in lol... - oh! the load, undo, delete and etc animation for props... simple... but love it. there is just so much more, i can go on and on as this program has completely taken blender's place in my development pipeline in a massively serious way. I should detail the development context for what "game development" projects this could work for... so this exports 2d images(and possibly video... buuut I havent checked). for serious developers, this would definitely be a solid tool for making a high graphics point and click game like myst(vr release) or anything like that in high quality, primarily built on the high quality assets, lighting, color grading tools and etc etc. I have 2 decades of unity experience(amongst other engines... and blah blah... not a resume, cut this down mike...). my point is, this as a level design tool is excellent as the library of assets to stand up well against unity's asset store both "out of the box"(easily) and with the additional dlc(a bonus). the content is seriously modular enough and... (this is important too) detailed enough to scale, rotate and utilize the details on props to instance a create whole new/unique looking environments or even props with how you repurpose them(like i tend to do all the time). uggg still went long on this lol... my point, this is totally a viable serious tool for game design... easily. to be clear... for projects that utilize 2d export formats, as this does not export 3d content... thats not a negative in anyway toward this tool, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! artists(comics, 2d animation, 3d animation with 2d environment projection, environmental art), game devs(point and click adventures... first person myst-like or third person broken sword style) and so on and so forth.... sorry this stiiiill was super long lol... buy this... the price point is and EASY recommend for artists and enthusiasts dungeon masters and players... it's just fun to use lol.
