Dont be fooled by the cute enemies and player character customization, cause this games difficulty is kinda like cuphead. So if you like difficult games where you don't mind retrying a couple of times then this is a very cool game ^_^. I also recommend getting this one a handheld like the Xbox Ally. :3 Side node: Most people reviewing the game is bad are mostly people who were not skilled enough to play the game since it is cuphead level difficulty.

To be reductive, Pepper Grinder is Dig Dug on ketamine that had a child with Celeste's difficulty, and the child has a Gurren Lagann Bible in its bedside drawer it prays with at night. But it's so much more. It's a Viking's Table piled high with a lot to offer. I picked it up once, and while it bounced off of me because I don't think I got it yet, I came back around and finished it, both with relief and satisfaction. [h3]Gameplay[/h3] Playing the game is, in and of itself, a huge joy: Digging through the soil to burst out and jump over a ravine, firing yourself out of cannons, tearing battleships in half, shredding through hordes of dudes, swinging and zipping around with a grapple hook, firing machine guns and rockets to destroy enemies and terrain, spraying impassible lava with water to turn it into traversible obsidian terrain, commandeering a snowmobile to make sick jumps, piloting a mech that topples buildings and squashes enemies like bugs; this game has a lot to offer to the player, and it's all fun. As far as how hard it is, it's what I wanna call pleasantly challenging, boasting a collection of both levels and bosses that are tough but fair on the player. Some bosses like the final one are a lot more painful to deal with, but you only really lose if you don't respect them and just keep trying to rush them down. You have both the regular levels, the bonus levels you unlock with Skeleton Keys you buy with Skull Coins you collect throughout your playthrough that offer an extra challenge, and the Time Attack versions of both of these levels, where you have to beat the clock to get gold medals for both the stickerbook stickers and achievement hunting. The Time Attacks are far more grueling, requiring tight movement, near-perfect platforming, and wasting zero time in fights where you have to. Depending on who you are, this is either the best challenge the game can give you, or a carpal tunnel simulator from having to hold/mash R2 all day. Speaking of the controls, while I did say there is a lot the game has to offer, the one thing it doesn't have to offer is control: the lack of air control you really have, the lack of turning control you have while digging; it's only ever got 3 buttons you need to press while playing the game, but what it's missing in button mapping, it's telling you to make up with a year of trig and physics to calculate the angle and velocity you need to be at to not overshoot or undershoot a jump once you pop out of the soil. [h3]Art[/h3] Eyecatching 2D sprite work. The different stages are also really nice in their design and themes - you start out washed up on a beach with mountains, then head to a volcanic region with poison gas fields and pools of lava to avoid, then head to a snowy mountain region with cannons and snowmobiles and hooks to swing from and zip to, then the remnants of an empire ruled by an undead leader with technology they created and left strewn about. Each stage also has a curiosity shop that lets you buy these customization options for Pepper (the player character). It's not super detailed, but there is both character expression and customization in the shops and menus, but those mostly have to do with hair color and cloak color. You've got 182 different outfit combinations, which I'm sure is a boon for the people who wanna play this game for sprite dress-up. You also can get a bunch of stickerbook pages and stickers of different sprites for your stickerbook, all purchasable with the Skull Coins and treasure you collect as you play, which is a cute little extra they threw in. That said, the stickers are randomly drawn from a gachapon pool, so if you want them all you have to keep holding down the drill button till you've exhausted either your treasure or gotten what you wanted. [h3]Sound[/h3] The sound of the drill revving and the soil parting as you dig through it is very impressive; the cannons offer very punchy booms as you blast through them or whenever enemies fire them at you, but the machine gun left something to be desired; I was reminded of the gun jetpack from Jetpack Joyride and how it sounded it like, which isn't a positive note. The snowmobile was badass to both listen to and drive though. In Stage 4, each stomp of the mech you operate sounds powerful, and each building you knock over and destroy leaves an impact. If there are any stock sounds effects, I couldn't pick them out. [h3]Music[/h3] The music is incredibly diverse. Each level has their own individual theme and they all seem to kind of fit with the setting of each level, with some levels that surprised me. To list examples that you can also check out either in game or on Youtube: [list] [*]Headstone Peak has these tubas at the front that kick off right when an enemy dies to a mine; then come in the kicks and snares of the drums in the back, followed by this instument that sounds like train whistles played at different pitches. [*]Cannoneer's Folly and Poison Ridge have these songs that run with a drum-and-bass aesthetic, where as Folly's works super well with the gameplay of blasting through the sky out of cannons and popping hot air balloons with the accompanying of other electronic instruments, Ridge has this trumpet solo and is accompanying at all times by bass guitar. Just gives me Ridge Racer vibes. [*]Brittle Glacier has this synthwave track with heavy kicks that swells and blasts as soon as you take control of a snowmobile. [*]Giant's Kitchen has these synths in the forefront that make way for this echoing trumpet solo [*]Breaker Pass has this high trumpet theme that kinda evokes a sense of exploration and heroism, and it kicks off as soon as you destroy an ice block in your path with a rocket; where there isn't trumpet, it's got a good bass guitar in the back followed by drum and slow electric guitar notes. [/list] The soundtrack is by no means a slouch. [h3]Story[/h3] You're not playing this for a story, tbh, but platformers usually have something charming about it. It's... serviceable: you're a pirate girl with a gas-powered drill who has to dig and pierce her way through swarms of enemies to get your stolen treasure back. It's not Citizen Kane, and I don't need it to be, but some more details would be nice and bits would be nice, like: who are these antagonists? Why did they steal from you? Are they also pirates? Why did they have to trek through 4 different biomes just to mug me? You get the point. [h3]Overall[/h3] It's a great sidescrolling platformer that somehow putsBeating the game in one go can take about 4 hours, with more being dedicated to the time attack levels. I personally don't think it's too short, but at $15 base price, the amount of value one can derive from it is either immense or nonexisent, depending on if they decide to do the time attack levels. Whether it's on sale or not, I do wholeheartedly recommend this game though. It's great fun whether you have an afternoon to kill or days to 100% the game .
An incredibly fun gameplay loop that I wish was just a little bit longer. You can easily run through the game in 3-4 hours or less, but the time trial mode and hidden coins allow for a good bit of replayability if that's your thing. The actual digging is some of the most fun movement I've had in a game in a long time. They add other elements to the gameplay as you go, sometimes specific to the world you're in, which kinda throws the gameplay off a bit imo. But the core loop of digging and flying around never gets old. Worth the $15 if you can see yourself getting hooked for sure.

Solid game, I really enjoyed the gameplay. Was relatively short , like 1/3rd of an average super Mario Brothers game. The levels were really cool and music was boppin. Love the look of Pepper and the mechanics of her grinder. Still gotta mess around with gathering all the stickers and finding the last bit of coins. Me ha encantado, es un buen plataformas con buenas ideas y a ratos muy original. Como negativo diría que es algo corto y los jefes son la parte mas floja, no por fáciles sino por que no me ha gustado el diseño de los jefes.
