A Timeless Masterpiece of Trade, Growth and Living Cities After dozens upon dozens of hours, I feel compelled to write a recommendation for Patrician III, because this game continues to amaze me in ways that very few modern games can. What strikes me the most is how alive the world feels. At first, you are just a small merchant trying to make a profit by moving goods between Hanseatic cities. The economy appears simple enough. Buy low, sell high. But gradually, the game reveals extraordinary depth. Every city has its own production chains, shortages, surpluses and evolving needs. Trade routes become logistical networks. Convoys become commercial arteries. Wealth becomes influence. And then something magical happens. You stop being a merchant. You become a builder of prosperity. Over time, you help cities grow. New workshops appear. Populations increase. Industries expand. Entire regions become more productive because of your efforts. Watching a city transform from a modest medieval port into a thriving economic powerhouse is one of the most satisfying experiences I have ever had in a management game. Even after many years, I am still amazed by the visual charm of these cities. I recently created a large panoramic mosaic of Lübeck in 1309 from twelve separate screenshots simply because I wanted to share my enthusiasm. The city had grown to a size I had never achieved before. It had roughly doubled in scale while still retaining its unique character and medieval atmosphere. The streets remained lively, the harbor bustling, and the skyline wonderfully picturesque. What makes this even more impressive is that the game achieves all of this with remarkable elegance. There is no unnecessary complexity for complexity's sake. Every mechanic serves the larger simulation. Production, transport, construction, politics, piracy and urban development all interact naturally. The convoy system remains one of my favorite features. Designing specialized trade fleets, armed escorts and combat squadrons creates strategic decisions that still feel meaningful today. Protecting your commercial empire from pirates while maintaining efficient supply chains gives the game a sense of scale rarely matched by modern economic simulations. The economic model is equally rewarding. Reaching a point where you own businesses across multiple cities and carefully balance production and consumption feels genuinely earned. Solving bottlenecks, developing new industries and supporting growing populations becomes an engaging long-term challenge. What surprises me most is how well the game has aged. Many modern management games offer bigger maps, more detailed graphics or more complex interfaces. Yet few manage to create the same feeling of belonging to a living economic ecosystem. In Patrician III, every shipment matters. Every warehouse matters. Every city matters. The graphics may be old, but the atmosphere remains timeless. The interface may show its age, but the underlying design remains brilliant. And the sense of progression—from a single ship to a vast commercial empire spanning the Hanseatic League—is still one of the most satisfying journeys available in gaming. More than twenty years after its release, Patrician III remains one of the finest economic strategy games ever created. Not because of nostalgia. Because it is genuinely exceptional. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys trading, city growth, logistics, economic planning, and the simple pleasure of watching a living world flourish thanks to their decisions.

I don’t understand the criticism of the Steam version. The game runs perfectly on Windows 10 and now on Windows 11 as well. What’s more, it’s a fantastic game that combines maritime trade, city management, diplomacy and naval combat. Don’t hesitate to give it a go if you get the chance: it’s a brilliant game! If you’re experiencing the display glitch where the image is distorted and appears purple, go to the game files and set the game executable to Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode. Please note that the gog version includes french language too.

Why do other games even exist?

It doesn't work straight away in windows 11. I tried downloading community patches to fix it and still nothing. Bought the GOG version at the same price and it was already patched working like a charm. Unfortunately Steam doesn't want to refund the game even if it's broken.

Für mich eines der Top 3 Spiele unter den Wirtschaftssimulationen!Hat nach all den Jahren den Charme nicht verloren.Es gibt einen super Guide in Deutsch der das Spiel wieder auf neueren Rechnern zum laufen bringt,allerdings brauchte ich die Hilfe eines guten Kumpels,da ich auch ein absoluter Laie bin was das angeht...von daher kann ich es nur wärmstens empfehlen.
