The puzzles are clever and their mechanic is interesting. A lot of thought clearly went into them. But as an experience this comes up short. It is best enjoyed with the sound off and the "journal" narrative sections skipped. The soundtrack is repetitive wordless vocalizing the entire way through, not minimalist enough to ignore, not substantial enough to be worth paying attention to. It's a missed opportunity: if you want your game to have a narrative, shouldn't the sounds support it, changing as the journey progresses through these various environments? The player would feel they were getting somewhere (without, say, having "YOU ARE GETTING SOMEWHERE" or the equivalent flash on the screen). Instead it relentlessly, monotonously woah-woahs along, feeling like a slowly revolving foam-rubber drill bit aimed at your brain. Wouldn't a sequential soundtrack have been a better investment in this whole travelling narrative than the slathered-on, ham-handed nonsense exposition that's here instead, and is integrated into the game like aluminum foil is integrated into leftovers? (Short version: small peasant runs away from home through deathtrap landscape to get astrophysics degree.) And that is doing the YOU ARE GETTING SOMEWHERE work, but badly? It's cringeworthily dumb. This could have had NO exposition and it would have probably made more sense. (Also, developers, do you know what "schmuck" means?) A Monster's Expedition is the expository wrapper on a puzzle game done well. I still miss that monster. And sorry, kid who is the "character" in this game, but your parents did have a valid point.
A gorgeous game with wonderfully designed puzzles, difficult but not frustrating. Great hint system too - not too hand-holding.
Both stylistically and in terms of mechanics, Paper Trail gives you an overwhelming feeling that the developers are imitating what they think a good idea sounds like. It's not fun to play or charming to listen to. But you can imagine the devs imagining themselves as making something that is clever and cozy.
Beautiful art and fun gameplay!
Un hermoso juego. Lo volveré a jugar seguramente.
