Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open is a narrative-driven supernatural adventure developed by Cellar Vault Games and published by Chorus Worldwide Games. Drawing heavily from Malaysian culture, folklore, and family traditions, the game delivers a heartfelt coming-of-age tale that stands apart from conventional horror experiences. Instead of focusing on constant scares or survival mechanics, it explores the emotional challenges of childhood through the eyes of Ting, a young girl blessed with the ability to perceive spirits that remain invisible to everyone else. The story follows Ting across several important stages of her life as she learns to cope with her unusual gift. Her ability to interact with supernatural beings creates both wonder and hardship, shaping her relationships with friends, family members, and the mysterious entities that cross her path. The narrative carefully examines themes of loneliness, acceptance, identity, and personal growth. As Ting struggles to understand her place in the world, players witness a believable emotional journey that feels grounded despite its paranormal premise. The supernatural elements serve as a vehicle for exploring real human experiences, making the story resonate on a deeper level. One of the game's most remarkable achievements is its representation of Malaysian culture. The setting feels authentic and vibrant, filled with local customs, traditions, architecture, and folklore rarely explored in video games. Everyday life is portrayed alongside ghost stories and spiritual beliefs, creating a world where the ordinary and extraordinary coexist naturally. This cultural authenticity enriches the narrative and gives the adventure a distinctive personality that separates it from more familiar Western horror settings. Visually, the game embraces a unique art direction inspired by traditional paper craft and theatrical storytelling. Characters and environments appear like carefully assembled paper figures placed within a living storybook. This artistic approach gives the world a charming appearance while still allowing moments of fear, mystery, and emotional intensity to shine through. The contrast between the handcrafted visuals and the darker supernatural themes creates a memorable atmosphere that remains engaging throughout the adventure. Gameplay focuses primarily on exploration, character interactions, environmental storytelling, and a variety of small activities that support the narrative. Players guide Ting through different locations, participate in conversations, solve light challenges, and engage in minigames that reflect both daily life and supernatural encounters. These mechanics are intentionally straightforward, ensuring that the story remains the central focus. While players looking for deep puzzle-solving or action-heavy gameplay may find the systems relatively simple, the interactive elements successfully maintain engagement and help strengthen the emotional connection to the characters. The pacing generally benefits from the game's storytelling priorities. Quiet moments of family life, friendship, and self-reflection are given room to breathe before giving way to more dramatic supernatural events. This balance helps the emotional scenes feel genuine rather than rushed. Some sections can feel slower than others, particularly for players who prefer gameplay-driven experiences, but the strong characterization and world-building make these moments worthwhile. The audio presentation complements the narrative beautifully. Music shifts seamlessly between comforting melodies and more unsettling compositions depending on the situation. Ambient sounds help bring neighborhoods, homes, and supernatural encounters to life, reinforcing both the warmth of Ting's everyday world and the tension of her paranormal experiences. Together with the visual design, the soundscape plays a major role in establishing the game's distinctive atmosphere. What truly elevates Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open is its emotional sincerity. The game treats its characters and cultural influences with care, creating a story that feels personal rather than formulaic. It is not a horror game designed purely to frighten players; instead, it uses supernatural themes to tell a touching story about growing up, facing fears, and accepting who you are. The result is an experience that remains memorable long after the credits roll. For players who enjoy story-focused adventures with strong cultural identity and meaningful character development, Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open is an excellent choice. Its combination of heartfelt storytelling, distinctive visual presentation, authentic folklore, and emotional depth makes it one of the more unique narrative adventures in recent years. Although the gameplay mechanics are relatively modest, the strength of the narrative and atmosphere more than compensate for that limitation. Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open succeeds as a beautifully crafted supernatural coming-of-age story that combines cultural authenticity, emotional storytelling, and artistic creativity into a compelling and memorable experience. Rating: 8/10

This game has a distinct charm, and I had a fun time playing it. I love how it embraces its own identity with the paper cutout-style sprites—it really adds to the atmosphere. The fixed camera angle didn’t bother me, but I can see how it might turn some players off. Technically, it’s solid—I only ran into one bug in my six-hour playthrough, which is pretty good. The broken English and local slang were an interesting touch and fit the setting, but after a while, the constant glossary popping up in the dialogue box started to feel a bit immersion-breaking. The story is good but somewhat cliché, especially if you grew up watching old-school Chinese horror movies. That said, I really appreciate how the game highlights that the real horror isn’t the ghosts, but the everyday tragedies people go through. The chapter with the mother was great, but the one with the father felt weaker—probably because he was written as a villain in the protagonist’s perspective, so his POV didn’t add much depth. Some chapters had good pacing, while others didn’t contribute much to the plot. I get that the game wanted to showcase Malaysian culture, which is great, but prioritizing that over the main story might lose some players who aren’t already interested in the culture. Maybe the mundane moments were meant to reflect the protagonist’s limited perspective as a child? Overall, it’s a solid, short game, worth checking out if you’re into Malaysian culture and paranormal themes.
