I desperately wanted to like this game. After playing Paper Dolls: Original on two separate occasions several years apart, I was looking forward to finally playing the sequel. I wanted to know more about the story, what happened and why, and found the first game to be promising (I gave it a 7.5/10). However, after 6 hours, 2 and 1/2 was spent in normal in what was really only 30 minutes of gameplay, dying endlessly to the same sequences and from the two main mobs spawning ON TOP OF ME as soon as I left the safe room, I cannot recommend this game. Granted, it's a bit older now, but the issues plaguing PD2 did not exist in PD:O. The story is much harder to follow, many items and documents are missing English translations or constructive descriptions, which makes certain puzzles near-impossible to solve without looking up extensive translated guides. As previously stated, even on Normal mode the mobs are WAY too aggressive. They would constantly spawn mere inches in front of mere after only a few seconds outside the save room(s). I spent more time making a sharp 180 turn and using the 3 seconds of sprint to get back and despawn them than I actually did solving puzzles or progressing. Then mob #2 came into the mix and I was essentially held hostage in the Master's Parlor. When Master Yin finally despawned, the black quadrupedal mass immediately took his place, and not only that, but quite frequently they spawned in the spot the previous one had just disappeared from, giving me no room to breathe or escape effectively. I could not get out the room, unable to outpace them even when running - that was biggest design failure, in my opinion: making mobs that are so hyper-aggressive, and your sprint speed barely puts distance between you. Meanwhile, they quickly catch up to you when you're forced to walk, and seem to operate on their own rules of how they can intercept you. In a cutscene? Doesn't matter, they approach you anyway and wait patiently for the scene to end so they can kill you. Everything, from unlocking doors to hiding in a cabinet, is a massive time gamble in which you HOPE AND PRAY TO EVERY GOD YOU CAN THINK that somehow you'll be able to move the one inch required for their attack to miss you and book it back to safety. So many times I thought there was a scripted appearance, died, and then discovered, no it wasn't scripted. They're just jerks. Master Yin spawned in hallways that were dead ends, at the entrance of rooms with only one exit, and I could not outrun him. Often they flanked me in every escape route I took, and when you start the game and most of the doors are locked, you literally have NOWHERE to go. There were also far less hiding places compared to the first game, which makes sense if combat was supposed to be a bigger priority - but combat was haphazard and often much riskier than just running and praying, especially with limited supplies. Perhaps the constant stalking could have been offset by more readily available places to retreat to rather than running 5 miles back to Buddha and falling into his golden, firm, resplendent arms. Ultimately, I restarted the entire game on Easy mode, and managed to get through it in 3 hours or so. I had to read a guide for the entire thing, to understand puzzles, pretty much everything. Despite the promise the first game held, this one is a downgrade in nearly everything except graphical quality. Pleasantly though, I didn't notice any bugs. Everything worked as intended when you could.... get it to work. Without being impaled. A lot. And at the end? I didn't find the conclusion compelling. I thought the "big twist" was dry, didn't make much sense in the grand scheme of things. I even forgot entirely that we were supposed to be saving our daughter at all because it was drowned out in everything else, and in my growing frustrations while playing. Then to find out it was all essentially... pointless? A ruse? A huge manipulation across space-time? Not at all satisfying. I won't be replaying it for the other achievements. Again, this is a huge blow to me, as I quite like the first game. If you buy PD2, get it on sale.
