The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, and neither hand is on the wheel.
I want to offer something of a counterpoint to some of the negativity surrounding this game. I am not going to wade into the protracted development cycle, crowdfunding scandals, or lack of progress (real or perceived). I don't have enough knowledge (or interest) to offer an opinion on those. I'm reviewing this purely on the basis of "Is this worth $40?" I've played over 100 hours and gotten a class to 25 and one to 15, and the answer to this is, "Yes! If..." If you are looking for a game that isn't like current MMO's and also isn't a private server that could be shut down at any moment. If you have large blocks of free-time. If you're okay with death penalties. If you want to rely on other players for basic things like leveling up and sometimes even gathering materials. If you start on the Stormona server and roll a Human, Dwarf, Ogre, or Dark Myr. Then this game may be for you. The base game, from 1-20 is fairly fleshed out. There's plenty of quests and crafting and dungeons and options to explore. The classes are all distinct (very much set into their specific roles) and functional. It scratches that classic EQ/FFXI itch that you can't get legally anymore. The community (on Stormona, at least) is fairly friendly. I've now played over 100 hours and feel like I've firmly gotten my money's worth. Gameplay is fun in that kind of mindless camping monsters to level up and get loot kind of way. If I had to offer two big criticisms, both related to graphics: -The game engine is not optimized at all and runs poorly. -The two most fleshed out areas (the starter areas for the races I specific above), Thronefast and Avendyr's Plains, are incredibly generic fantasy environments. While these two areas have a few interesting subzones, they are dreadfully boring both visually and design-wise. It's a shame because Wild's End (the Halfling and Elf starting area) is a much nicer looking and more interesting area, but almost no one plays in that area. There's no open world dungeon (like Halnir's Cave in AVP), and generally due to the network effect, even players who start there quickly move to AVP because that's where everyone is. Past 20 the game is much less fleshed out (fewer areas, fewer dungeons, classes missing skills, etc). Experience gain also starts to slow down pretty dramatically. I don't know if/when the devs will ever "launch" this game. It's missing a lot of basic features, some which are on the roadmap and some which aren't. Certainly the loudest members of the community will tell you this game is going nowhere. I don't know if I will continue to play at this time. But I had fun with the time I've had and got exactly what I was expecting.

Old School grindy game, sometimes we all need to just chill and grind it out, no rush, very fun.
I really enjoyed this world when it first came out. Reminded me of my early days of kingdom of drakkar and tibia exploring the world. I actually liked that there is no in game map and you had to learn the lay of the land. I just don't have the time anymore to grind through levels for an early access game like I could in the past. I think that if we could level faster until full release we could test things more thoroughly and provide the developers with good feedback. I really appreciate the spirit of the game but it's development is just far too slow and things get old fast. I appreciated logging in each day and seeing new additions and changes to the game, but I don't feel like that is happening anymore. If you build it, they will come, if you sit on it, then everyone will too. If this game survives until then, I will defiantly return. If not, I appreciate the nostalgia this game provided. Even for the few months that it held me. I will always cherish the memories I've had both new and old.
I WANTED to like Pantheon, I'm itching for another old school MMORPG, but this just didn't scratch that itch. The world felt too small, the assets were all over the place cosmetically, and the world just didn't feel... "cozy." The world design and layout of the VERY SMALL world (the whole game can fit inside of one WoW classic zone) just felt random and unappealing. When I want that classic MMO feel, its needs to be cozy, simple world, especially the starter area. But this game is just like a random assortment of jagged cliffs and assets pasted everywhere.
A beautiful early-access MMO with a lot of potential. I wish content updates came faster and that the community were larger. At launch, the game was thriving and had little to no performance issues. However, it currently suffers from a lack of features and core systems. The gameplay is fairly simple in its current state, which makes me slightly concerned. That said, out of all the early-access MMOs on the market, I think this one is the best—provided the development team can deliver the rest of the game within a reasonable timeframe.
If you enjoyed old school EQ, then you'll love this. Honestly, it uses some of the same sounds and textures and all of the same concepts for character classes, which is a little weird admittedly, but it really is a great deal of fun. Hopefully with the Spring wipe and substantial overhauls that are anticipated we'll be getting much closer to an actual release candidate, but even so it's worth playing now.
Not having a map is more punishing that the xp loss or ITEMS DROP in death . Not having the map then makes the finding of the corpse Extrreemly hard . i love the vibe of the game but not a reason to be so hard .... you have to be costant aware to where you are .... witch without a map is a full time job and i have one :)
If you played old school MMOs this is a must play. I am completely addicted. There's clearly hundreds of hours of entertainment here, even the negative reviewers have 1000+ hours and the game isn't even at 1.0 yet.
This game is not ready to play...even for early access....
