Almost forgot how bad and frustrating this can be. While some developer surely lifted a trick or two from it (Bethesda?) it's still a bad game, with highly unbalanced skill levels (Meaning it's a breeze for most of the time if you know what you're doing until you stumble on a couple of levels that increse diifficulty tenfold with no apparent reason). Enemies are needless reskins of the same models. And they are bullet sponges without any real behavioral value. The same enemy in the space of one level can take 5 rockets or two to be killed . Simply amateur. Most of the secrets are either stupidly simple or stupidly though, requiring endless saves and reloads to five star. The impossibility of backtracking on some levels makes them all the more frustrating. On top of that, you have to know beforehand where they are located, otherwise they're simply impossible to spot. Nah, in spite of having played it for a very long time (and five starred it and the expansions) since it came out, I can't bring myself to recommend buying this today. Go Serious Sam or Doom instead. Oh, and on my machine it crashes like 8 out of ten times, just playing through some crowded scenes or intense shooting, and I beat Doom Eternal top to bottom several times just fine. Not good. Not recommended.

Painkiller is a decent shooter that doesn't do anything particularly memorable. The game is a simple loop of moving forward until you find a checkpoint, and then defeat all the enemies before moving forward. It's very similar to Doom 2016 in terms of structure. The weapons are pretty good, and they all have alternate fire modes which effectively doubles the player's arsenal, but the enemies leave a lot to be desired. The aforementioned cast of foes is extremely varied, and I'm pretty sure that new ones are introduced in almost every stage, but most of them share the same behavior which makes them interchangeable with one another as a result. Furthermore, there's no common theme across Hell's army, and I can't help but think that they had a Halloween enemy asset pack lying around because that's what most enemies are: generic horror movie monsters. Enemies drop souls on death that heal you a little bit and charge a demon form that makes you invincible for a short period, but they have an annoying delay after the enemy die and realistically you are only using the power once per level so I didn't bother to collect them after a while. The other form of collectible are coins that can be used to equip cards for passive bonuses and a special ability that can be triggered once per level. I thought this was a cool idea that incentivizes completing additional challenges during the levels but the game only tells you the challenge after you have already completed the stage so it feels like padding. Either way, the combat is generally fun and I enjoyed nailing enemies to walls with the stake gun. There are also boss fights and they suck, plain and simple. As for the story, it's pointless. I don't want to be mean because they tried to make it cool, but it's not. In practice, Daniel is Serious Sam without the sense of humor. I also played the Battle out of Hell expansion that comes with the Black Edition and it's ok, but not as good as the base game. I like the evil circus theme, but the city levels can stay in Hell for all I care. In conclusion, Painkiller is alright. The moment to moment action is fun, but the game lacks a clear identity, and is full of small annoyances. I think the base game is probably worth a playthrough for fans of casual shooters, but I sort of regret replaying it after the fact.
Un classique !!!

Better than Serious Sam purely for the bunnyhop.
