Afterblast is fun for a little while. The maps are engaging, the guns feel good, the abilities are satisfying, and the core gameplay is solid. Enemy and item variety is decent too, even if some enemies are annoying as hell. But calling this a roguelite feels misleading. There is basically no real build diversity. Run to run, it feels way too similar, and that completely kills the whole point of the genre for me. Instead of adapting to new items, weird synergies, or interesting builds, it just feels like you are slowly grinding permanent upgrades in the same game over and over. That is not what I wanted when I bought a roguelite. It feels more like a progression-based RPG with repeat runs than an actual roguelite. If that is what you want, maybe you will like it. But if you are buying this expecting meaningful run variety and build experimentation, you are probably going to be disappointed. Here’s an even harsher version if you want it meaner: Afterblast has good shooting, solid abilities, and some fun maps, but it barely qualifies as a roguelite. The biggest problem is the complete lack of build diversity. Almost every run feels the same, which makes the whole game get stale way faster than it should. Instead of feeling like a roguelite where each run changes how you play, it feels like a repetitive RPG grind with permanent scaling. That might work for some people, but it is absolutely not what I expected when I bought a game marketed like this. Honestly, I regret buying it for that reason alone. Recommended? No — not if you actually want a roguelite.
Fantastic game tbh scratches that RoboQuest / Gunfire itch
AfterBlast is a great wee game to play solo or with friends. Movement is just like Quake style with the grappling hook from Weapons Factory Arena (mod for Quake 3) Enabling you pull of smooth and fluid movement around the levels. As well as using it to get the finisher on mobs as well as chaining the effect around. Levels and both modes of play are very nice and it runs really well performance wise. Even for a friend with a much older pc just having some hiccups in the thick of the action. For the price it's a great. Try it and you'll see even with a few games how good this is :)
30/04/2026: I'm someone that loves fps, and the grind. This game would be right up my alley but at the end of the day it's kinda just frustrating to play. Within the first hour or so, i had to turn off the music because it was getting unbearably annoying. A few seconds after that, i could hear the absolute lack of satisfying reload sounds, prompting me to look at the animations as well. Both seem, as this game is in early access, kind of unfinished. I also can't help but suspect the devs took their weapon inspiration from overwatch, which is a shame because the artstyle they have do give them space to do some more unique things, but alas. As the other reviews say, there's extremely little build variety, and uh, yeah. There isn't. It kinda caps out at on hit there's x percent that y, but only as isolated cases and no effects that trigger other effects and such, making everything kinda flavorless. Combine that with the underwhelming audio feedback and the roguelike element becomes kinda meh. I do like these boss designs though, but it's kinda jarring to just get dropped into the same size arena instantly after a load screen, some bosses have intro animations, others don't? They individually kinda feel and play like bosses made during a game jam, there's a very limited amount of things that can happen, and they always seem to happen at the exact same time in the exact same way. Using any hitscan weapon makes all bosses trivially easy since they will not dodge or move when you unload 240 minigun bullets into their faces. Except for the one ball guy i guess. Speaking of balls, I was surprised to see a decent density of enemy projectiles, which is an improvement over it's colleagues in the genre, but with lackluster audio feedback it sometimes kinda feels like bs when you get blasted with 12 homing bullets going from full hp to about 10. And yes that's a skill issue, but i would like to use more than just my eyes to see it coming, pun intended. This problem becomes a bit more obvious with bossfights, especially the stationary platform guy. Where you can get oneshot from no shield, full health to a dissapointing death due to absolute bullet vomit coming your way. Bullet hell games usually work due to there being patterns and reading/responding to that, but these are barely readable. The boss also just stands there like an idiot tanking bullets to the face so it's more a battle of attrition than something that's fun to play. It's pretty close to being good, and yeah it can be fun at times, but most of the time it frustrates me at this point. With some work this could be a great game but as it stands it feels uninspired and stale, which is bearable depending on your mood, like a subway sandwich you've left in the fridge for a few days.
fun game. kinda like a mix of Abyssus, Gunfire Reborn, Roboquest, and Doom Eternal
Afterblast is extremely fun. The way you grapple in to get more shield is very fun and adds another aspect to the shooting hordes. When an enemy gets low on health you grapple into them and you'll recover shields. There are times you might be very close to death so you'll be trying your hardest to lower an enemy enough to hopefully get the grapple off. Can't wait to see where they take this game because it really is one of the most fun rogue lite fps games I've played
Love the game so far and cant wait to see what else comes out. Enjoying playing this on stream as well, shout out to Charles!!
This game deserves way more recognition! The weapons feel unique and the build crafting is incredible. Cannot wait to see what these devs continue to cook up!
Hello developers game is great but gameplay gets bored so i still will recommend those who enjoy it more than me x3 game graphics 10/10 Offline mode Yes Gameplay 3/10 Cool guns 10/10 World maps 10/10 Honest review
Game takes the best mechanics from all the popular rogue lite games and does a poor job of them. It's like a mix between gunfire reborn, risk of rain and roboquest done mediocrely. Maybe let it cook.
